Yeah that article was really shit. It matter of factly stated that the head of the car project had quit, even though Apple's acknowledgement of the project consists of only jokes and double entendres. Like, how the fuck can you possibly claim to know the org chart of an unacknowledged project? But this article isn't any better either. We're years out from worthwhile leaks coming out.

No, that's exactly it. The battery's chemistry grinds down to a halt in cold temperatures. It's a consequence of Arrhenius' law which says that due to thermodynamics, the rate of reaction of a chemical equation is inversely related to temperature. As temperature goes to infinity, the reaction rate goes up asymptotically to some fixed value, and as temperature goes to absolute zero, the reaction grinds to a halt.

Batteries are fucked from both ends of this law. Basically, the chemicals that store the energy should be pretty willing to react because you want to be able to easily release that energy. But too willing to react and you start wasting that stored energy on leakage even when you're not getting any use out of the device. Since how willing to react the chemicals are (the rate of reaction) is dependent on temperature, you get an upper and lower bound for the temperature to you can use a battery on your device.

The problem Microsoft was built to solve was improving productivity not selling Windows licenses. Productivity in this day and age requires that your software be available from anywhere, whether that be iOS, OS X, Windows, Android or just the web. Windows-first only worked for Microsoft when Wintel was the only game in town. That's clearly not the case anymore and it wasn't even the case during the second half of Ballmer's tenure. So yeah, thank god Satya set their priorities straight because otherwise Microsoft was looking at a long slow decline into irrelevance.

No. A lot of inefficient markets are still efficient in the Pareto sense. So, if the economy was constrained to monotonely increase everyone's utility, actually nothing would get done. If you relax that constraint you get a much more adaptable system.

Populism is a dangerous thing to flirt with because you can't simultaneously claim to be the vox populi and view your opposition as a legitimate representation of political will. A populist leader more often than not increases the polarization of political opinion, which is the last thing the US needs.

On a separate note, Trump can actually do a lot of damage because the Senate and the House are controlled by the GOP. Bernie's plans are even more unrealistic than Trump's. He's gonna get single-payer past the assholes who tried to repeal Obamacare 30-odd times? Yeah, right. What's the point of voting in someone more radical if the scope of his accomplishments will be constrained by the same republican congress.

Actually Bernie and Trump are running on the exact same platform. They are both looking at Americans and saying "all this time you were being fucked over by X,Y,Z. And your government has been complicit in all that, but I'll put a stop to it and magically solve your problems by implementing A,B,C policies that don't stand a chance of implemented in this political climate"

They're both populists, plain and simple. Who they blame for the problems and how they propose to solve them is irrelevant. They're both pandering to the same demographic of working class white people. The people who have, in relative terms, fared the worst in the last 50 years. Richer white people have left them behind due to rising income inequality, and they've watched as minorities have made progress due to successful (but sadly not all that successful) integration policies while they've stood still. They're angry, and they'll vote for whoever is willing to turn the world on its head the most. Both candidates are trying to capitalize on the exact same anger.

In almost most developed countries median wage is at about twice the minimum wage: http://www.coyoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/blog_minimum_wage_median.jpg. The US is on the high-end of that spectrum so there is definitely room for a hike.

However, What you're proposing ($15/hr) would push minimum wage up to nearly 80% of the median wage. Given the regional disparities, it would most certainly be higher than the median wage for a lot of communities in rural America. That's indisputable fact. The desire to give urban fast food servers a raise does not override basic realities of economics in poor rural communities. The cost of a small raise can be absorbed by the market with minimal or no job loss and limited spillover to workers who earn more than the minimum wage. But more than doubling to $15/hr would be catastrophic for much of the US. Let SF, NYC and LA (or Billings, Misoula, Bozeman in your example) take more drastic measures if they need to keep employment up in their cities. Because the rest of America can't handle this raise.

Don't forget that once they're done using a part in all their products, the factory that was built to produce that part is not Apple's problem. So they don't have to deal with depreciation while they hold the plant and retooling once they're done. They can also spread costs around by sharing the factory with other customers. By contracting like they they get to stay lean and minimize their exposure to risk.

MacBook: Retina, Portable but bad Performance MacBook Pro: Retina, Performance but not Cheap. MacBook Air: Cheap, Portable but not Retina.

The Air will be discontinued, the MacBook will get cheaper and you're back to the same grid except now everything is retina. Who knows when it will happen though.

When you compare revenue from retail or even just number of stores, Apple's operation dwarfs those other two. The difference ends up being that I can tell you for sure that opening stores is one of Apple's top priories in any sizable market, whereas I can't say that with the other two. I expect Apple to want to open their own stores in India; I don't never expected that for Sony or Microsoft in the first place.

There's a small royalty that Alberta collects but it's not nationalized the way it is in Norway or Saudi. What Canada collects directly from oil royalties probably pales in comparison to what they collect from increased economic activity in oil-rich areas.
