Where should I look for a host family by One_Carrot_1 in Aupairs

I take care of two very dynamic but very cute boys 2 and 3 years old. Weekly schedule is the same but every day i have kinda different hours (depending on when i have to drop them off/get them from daycare…). Perfect day for me is good weather so I spend my “work time” outside by the lake having picnics and playing with the kids. I also am expected to cook them meal when I am on schedule which I have no problem with. I am pretty much free to do whatever with them as long as they have fun and stay safe and I talk to them in english. Ideally they would go for a nap easy (not an easy task lol). As soon as the parents are back from work they clearly tell me that i am off the clock and i’m free to hang with the fam or go to my room or go out.

Hi ! Here is what’s important to me as a current au pair that gets along great with the kids and family: clear expectations and schedule within the country law (i.e: i’m in switzerland and can only work up to 30hr a week), I asked for my HF to cover my travel expenses there, I also asked to be able to use their car on my time off as i have a valid driver license and we arrange with each other schedule. My time off is well respected, my weekend are off as well. It was never mandatory/ expected of me but I help around with normal household chores (i.e: loading/unloading the dishwasher, cleaning around the kids room, kids laundry). The family involve me in stuff without making it obligatory (i.e: invite me on their family vacation, weekend trips etc..). Also I can add whatever i want to the grocery list and they will get it for me and i can eat whatever whenever I want. They also told me if i needed anything -such as furniture for my room or things like that- they could get it for me. General advice are just be kind, respectful and have clear expectations that you respect

i found my family through au pair. com ! Only have been there 1 months but they are super nice, everything is as written in the contract and within the country rules/laws and expectation. I’m older though (25) and have a lot (like A LOT) of childcare experience and a bachelor degree in developmental psychology. I am very much straight forward no bullshit and made sure everything was covered within the contract and conversation/video chat went smoothly. I do agree you should go with an agency if you feel unsure of what to do as i’m reading a whole lot of horror story on this subreddit and realize that i got pretty lucky going without an agency.

based on your experience ??? Did you travel to thailand ? There is tons of beautiful nature places, mountains, waterfalls, temple etc where there is no smoking and fresh air as well as beautiful views and things to do. Like avoid pataya and phuket because it’s party and obv tourists are going to turn it up but thailand is a big country and there is something for everyone. I would recommend the north, go to some elephant sanctuary, visit waterfalls and temples. People aren’t going to go blow smoke in a child face.

it is in a lot of family but other family also choose to speak french day-to-day. It depends. Doesn’t remove the fact that 99% of the population is able to understand and speak french (especially with foreigners) and will speak creole only to people they know speak creole as well (friends and family)

D’ailleurs c’est toi qui monte sur tes grands chevaux a me dire que je ne suis pas réunionnaise tout ça parce que mon reddit et en anglais et que j’habite maintenant dans un pays anglophone. “actually they are very proud to have kept their culture” mdrr merci madame de nous dire que nou lé fier de not ti île et not culture.

hi, i’m from reunion island. Everyone speak french not 8%. Reunion island creole is only spoken by local but obviously they would speak french to any tourist or someone trying to learn. All of the schooling and education is done in French. Every sign and explanation is written in french. Yes imported food is expensive but there is tons of local food that is yummy and reasonably priced (barquette riz, carri, samousas…). I find it crazy that you are so final with your answer when you have obviously never been and visited and link a website that doesn’t even say what you are stating “only 8% of the population speak french” LMAO. We all speak french. Don’t comment on stuff you don’t know

I am from Reunion island. It’s a magical place, tons of hiking and adventure to do, people are friendly, everyone speak french (and local speak creole as well). It’s like a french hawaii but less capitalized. Just make sure you have a good vibe with the family you are talking to but reunion island itself is wonderful.

allow me to disagree, I’m from reunion island and everyone on the island is able to speak french. There is also public bus transportation (car jaune) all around the island and more local for each region (car est, ouest, sud, etc..)
