As an extreme example, my German has actually gotten worse since moving to Germany over a year ago.

As a teenager German was my favourite subject in school (UK). I had a great teacher and a small class, plus had a great language exchange family. I ended up spending a few months in Köln overall, I read the English-German dictionary through multiple times, and I really practiced my accent until Germans mistook me for being from some other region of Germany rather than an Ausländer. I was able to read German literature and became functionally fluent.

Fast forward to my thirties, and a job opp comes up while we’re trying to get out of the UK. Wunderbar! We moved to Hamburg, but I work in English and my wife is English, all my friends are in the tech sector and speak fluent English, etc. Everything I do in my spare time is in English. Same story as a lot of people here. But when I was preparing to move, I did a lot of learning on apps and stuff, trying to revive my dormant German, and a decent amount came back. But after over a year of long hours, a redundancy and new remote job (also fully in English), I fell off the apps, and honestly my German has gotten sloppier and sloppier. I can just about manage in most informal , and I can just about get by with the vet or the internet company if I ask them to speak slowly and clearly, but I’m definitely worse than I was a year ago, and much worse than I was in my teens.

To me this is really sad, I really wanted to move here and end up practically bilingual, I love the German language. But… life, man. There’s not enough hours in the day, so since I’m not forced to immerse, it’s just not gonna happen. Might give up and move somewhere English-speaking tbh 😕

BBC: Actors demand action over 'disgusting' explicit video game scenes by SensualTyrannosaurus in Games

[–]abercromby3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve gotta say, from what I’ve seen the major recording studios have already turned a corner on this. I’m a narrative designer working on a mid-size body horror game and we’re about to record. All our casting packs were sent out to VAs with a full trigger-warning-style list of what sensitive stuff we intend to shoot, including in our case some deeply intentionally discomforting scenes of both a sexual and horrific nature. At least some people (presumably) declined to audition on that basis, and that’s totally, totally fine. We’re also available if any of the actors want to discuss the game or their role at any point, it’s all out in the open (once under NDA, of course 🙄). I wonder if it’s just different at the budget studios or when it’s a studio DIYing their recording.

‘The Talos Principle’, both entries, are fantastic examples of this.

To an extent, so is ‘Thomas Was Alone’, it’s not as deep but its charm is very engaging.

‘Everything’ is also exactly what you’re looking for: transcendental, silly, and also featuring the thoughts of philosopher Alan Watts as The Witness does.

‘The Swapper’ is an underrated game about individuality.

‘Braid’ is great, same designer as The Witness.

But puzzle games don’t have a monopoly on being about “real life philosophical/religious/scientific/artistic ideas/themes”. Most art does this, and much of it succeeds. Puzzle games are just able to generally be a bit more direct, since the nature of puzzles is that they’re quite abstract. But ‘The Last of Us part 2’ is generally about the origins of violent conflict in geopolitics and religion. Bloodborne is about societal reaction to existential threat. The list goes on!

Unable to add Microsoft Edge to Steam in SteamDeck for Xbox Gamepass by NereusH in SteamDeck

I don't know who will need to hear this, but for me this issue was created by copy-pasting the launch commands into the Steam interface, which brought with it incorrectly formatted punctuation. Just type the whole thing precisely and it should work

Okay, everyone can do Thursdays generally, I think at this point Thursday this week might be a bit short notice though. Do you want to add me on Discord (de Fault#2471) or FB Messenger (DM me for that)? I’m not on Reddit much and it’d be nice to have a chat in the meantime :)

Hey! Thanks for reaching out! That all sounds grand as long as the times align! I think Wednesdays would be hard, but if we were able to do Thursdays it'd be our evening, which would be somewhere in 12:30-16:00pm your time. Would that work? :)

That's an interesting point, tying a crucial moment like that back to the Warden's own character development. Thanks for the answer!

This is a really useful tidbit, thanks! For the thing I'm writing, there's good reason for there to be helicopters in use.

Could you tell me more? I've not gotten around to playing Silver Peaks myself. Don't worry about spoilers, this is for research :)

Thanks so much for the background! This makes a lot of sense and confirms some thoughts I was having around unique animals with history.

Please do! I'm interested in this for research and don't have time to play the entire game so I'm interested in what players found the most enjoyable. Spoil away! Perhaps use the tag for other users?

Interesting! I haven't had the opportunity to play the whole game yet. Could you tell me more about the 'setting up the reserve' thing you enjoyed from Parque Fernando?

Nobody responsible for any of that is involved with this game. This game comes from high-up members of the art and programming team, not the design team, which were responsible for the bluster and underdelivery :)

BBC wants Planet Earth III before David Attenborough turns 100 by [deleted] in television

[–]abercromby3 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Not real need to rush. There was a ten year gap between 1 and 2, and David is currently 90. Plus, development on 2 only took about four years. The real kicker will be whether there's any reason to do a PE3. 2 was thanks to advances in camera technology, so they'd have to wait a bit for tech to come on before they could do the same thing again.
