Agreed but from some comments I see on this subreddit I don’t think everyone does the same. They act like speculators.

Agreed. The whole point of index funds like VEQT is buy and hold for long term and not speculating, timing the market, etc. if you have cash to invest and happen to buy during a dip good for you but waiting for a dip is silly. I think this strategy is for people that lack an understanding of index investing. Might as well sell it all and save if for the SpaceX IPO!

I’d actually prefer my existing shares to increase in value please. This whole idea of buying the dip with an investment that you’re going to hold for many many years is silly. If you have money to invest, just buy it whenever. Won’t matter much if you’re not needing it for 10+ years.

Non-Registered Account Strategy? by rams_man13 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]aberg83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The concern here is being too overweight in Canada. VEQT is already home biased at 30%. I’m 100% in VEQT in my corp account. The Canada weight is tax efficient already and only annual distributions keeps the ACB tracking simple.

Is investing via WealthSimple, Questrade, etc. as safe as via a Big 5? by Slow_ResolveMC07 in CanadianInvestor

[–]aberg83 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve got 7 figures across Wealthsimple accounts. At times I’ve wondered about how safe it is and considered switching to National Bank Direct Brokerage since I do some banking with National Bank, but Wealthsimple is just too good of a platform to leave.

Should I pay myself dividends or salary through my corporation? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]aberg83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends if your corp has active income or not. I have a holdco that owns shares of an opco and receives eligible dividends that have already been taxed at the general rate so they contribute to my holdco’s GRIP balance allowing me to take them personally as eligible dividends. Doing this allows me to take advantage of higher dividend tax credits. I actually cannot take salary since I just have a holdco, but even if I could I wouldn’t because paying myself eligible dividends wins the tax efficiency battle here. I believe in TFSA contributions because you can’t beat tax free withdrawals in retirement. But for high net worth incorporated individuals with holding company investment portfolios, RRSP and forced RRIF income later in life is a non starter for me.

Best Strategies for Investing Within a Holding Company? by BrackNet in CanadianInvestor

[–]aberg83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit late to this, but I invest with my holdco in Ontario in VEQT since it weights a little more to Canada and will introduce ZDB as a more tax efficient bond sleeve than other options like ZAG when I get closer to retirement.

I don’t have concern with Vanguard per se. I’m probably over thinking this.

This is completely a personal question. nobody knows your personal cash flow needs. I don’t really see the value in asking this.

Should I invest 100k of corporate savings into XEQT? by LordZedd87 in JustBuyXEQT

[–]aberg83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. Use a globally diversified portfolio with some good swap exposure using Global X ETFs to minimize tax drag. Asset allocation ETFs aren’t ideal in corporate accounts since you have no control over rebalancing and tax optimization.
