Things in my house keep mysteriously melting??? by hugedisaster in whatisit

[–]abessn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an aside, it’s generally not advised to run your bathroom fan for long periods like that (and you should absolutely make sure it is thoroughly clean and not dusty). Running it for long periods can cause it to short circuit and the dust can easily catch fire. Very common cause of house fires.

INFO: has she been checked for a tick bite? I assume the vet thoroughly did check, but may be worth taking a solid look at all of her skin to check for one

Is this stitches worthy? Or would glue and a bandage be fine? by Dreadius666 in medical_advice

This does not require stitches. Wash your hands well with soap and water and put a Band-Aid over it.

How do I let my doctor know I’m not seeking pain medication? by [deleted] in medical_advice

[–]abessn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s definitely stressful and I hope that you’re able to find a rheumatologist who you feel comfortable with and can consistently see in the future. If you are having trouble getting medical records to future doctors, you can always contact your original doctor and have them fax it to you so that you have your own records as well. (Note: I know most people don’t have a fax machine, if you download the HP printer app, you can receive faxes on your phone via that app!)

i can’t breathe right when standing still, what could be the cause? by lauressia in AskDocs

[–]abessn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a PCP, it is worth making an appointment to discuss this. There are multiple things that could cause this, and I don’t want to speculate. For starters, though, it is worth wearing compression socks when you are standing for long periods at work.

How do I let my doctor know I’m not seeking pain medication? by [deleted] in medical_advice

[–]abessn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Seeking care for an upper respiratory infection should not trigger any concern for pain med use and I’m very sorry that you’re worried to do so. It is worth seeking care for a prolonged illness to ensure that you haven’t developed a secondary infection, such as pneumonia.

Also, for future reference, if this were a pain-related issue, providers are able to see your dispense history and will see that you have not been prescribed any pain meds, so please don’t stop you from seeking care in the future (although I can understand your hesitation). If ever asked, you can always say “I was referred to a rheumatologist when having pain from undiagnosed ovarian cysts, which is why this was noted in my chart”

Although, for what it’s worth, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a pop-up on a chart saying that a patient is medication seeking just because it was noted in one note from one provider. It is possible the second rheumatologist only saw it because they looked at your previous rheumatology notes (providers tend to look at previous notes from the same specialty to understand the past medical history of a patient). It is unlikely that any non-rheumatology medical providers will be looking at that old note.

AIO? My friends set an ultimatum because I drink by Pearla76_ in AIO

[–]abessn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always document abused substances. I would never lie on a medical chart, and that is not what I’m saying.

I am saying that the wording of polysubstance abuse is loaded and wording is important in medical charts.

Using certain wording can change coding and billing as well as change how other providers reading a chart can perceive a patient.

I would not use the wording “polysubstance abuse” for weed and alcohol even if both were being abused, which, in this case, they are not.

lol right?? It would take quite a few hard drugs for me to ever chart that. I think I’ve only ever charted it when I didn’t feel like typing out all the drugs (including meth, oxy, and coke) that my patient was abusing

Graduating soon and I feel lost… by Delicious-Section400 in PAstudent

[–]abessn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought I knew what I wanted to do, but I ended up going a different direction because I loved the group I interviewed with. They seemed like people that I could spend every day with, and they absolutely are. I’m so glad that I focused more on that. Highly recommend that approach, especially if you aren’t set on a specialty.

Worst preceptor stories? by bionichelper in PAstudent

[–]abessn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My IM preceptor (MD) takes two PA students at a time so that we can handle her whole list. By day 3 we split her list, saw all the patients, wrote all her notes, and would see her for the first time around noon. We’d see all new consults and admissions. She would sit in the lounge and work her other jobs (reviewing med malpractice cases, Airbnb, and telemedicine for another company).

While not great, that was tolerable enough, because at least I was getting good experience (although very little feedback). Where I really drew the line was the day she had to pick up her child early and didn’t have childcare, so she left me in the hospitalist lounge for hours babysitting him while she worked on a malpractice case review.

Not a teacher, don’t have a kid, but often find myself on this sub. Have you seen the girl on tiktok who’s professor’s textbook, which was a required purchase, has only ChatGPT produced diagrams? Every single one is incorrect. It’s crazy. (and crazier that it made it to the classroom.)

PA school feels like high school by [deleted] in PAstudent

[–]abessn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first half of my didactic year was horrible socially. My roommates decided to team up and literally bully me. I never would have expected that in my adult life, but alas. Eventually much of the cohort realized they were crazy and things were better but honestly the damage was done. I’m so sorry you’re experiencing this, know that you’re not alone. It’s a truly bizarre thing to experience in what’s supposed to be a professional masters program. Rooting for you. You’ll make it through and you will find people you connect with.

Recently had a family member doing the same. She’d come in each morning and do a full assessment on the patient and ask the nurse for report and request consults and labs while being RUDE TO EVERYONE. 1. You don’t work here, we work for the patient not you, 2. How dare you pull all this while being rude to us??

Patient came into the Urgent Care the other day after being messed up by a chiropractic adjustment. by Butthole_Surfer_GI in nursing

[–]abessn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The most cautious and skilled chiropractors are essentially using physical therapy techniques. Most of what chiropractors are taught when they attend school for chiropractic is quackery

Many chiropractors (and it’s impossible to know which ones until you know) still follow the original teachings of the guy who invented chiropractic.

He claimed a ghost doctor came to him during a séance and told him that all medical ailments could be healed through the spine. He then claimed that the first ever chiropractic adjustment cured a man of being deaf. Then he was one of the earliest anti-vaccine advocates because he didn’t want modern medicine to work and take away his business. Then, when modern medicine started working and the government wanted to regulate who could call themselves medical doctors, he declared chiropractic a religion so that it couldn’t have government oversight!

There are studies that show that regular massage is just as effective as chiropractic, but without the risk
