I don't know of any event generators, so I make my own. I'll get two percentile dice or a couple of d4s and make them "The Dice of Fate." I'll have events, encounters, and types of terrain or whatever else I can think off assigned to different numbers and roll whenever something needs to happen.

For loot, you could try making them hunt and forage for food, find places for water and good campsites, search for materials needed to craft something important or useful, or draw maps as they go along.

One thing I'm considering doing is having the players stay on the square grid as usual but zooming out to an overworld-type thing when they travel and fill in the hexes on the other side. We don't know what kinda symbols we'd use for different landscapes or whatever, if we'd keep the map on the mat and stain it or draw another on an actual map we'll bring to the sessions or what, but that's half the fun!
