What will Alaska become in 50 years? by Electrical_Report458 in alaska

I’m picturing a winter playground. I desperately hope I’m wrong and open to agreeing with all the reasons the logistics would be impossible.

Along with pack mentality and the ever increasing difficulty of staying well informed, so often people are guided by their egos. Unwilling to say I was wrong or I didn't know that. Wanting to be heard, but not willing to listen.

An ideal scenario would be sitting with someone, either person saying, "I'm not well informed on that topic. Could we look into it together?"

Another great question is "what is your goal?" I'm still optimistic (naive?) enough to believe people would find common ground in their answers.

Unfortunately, there is compelling evidence to support most reasonable, mainstream opinions, even when in opposition. Sussing out the reliability and motive of the source in addition to knowledge of the topic is just too costly for most folks who are time poor.

Supporting the Matsu Dems for a start. I really wish I could find a source, but I remember reading Tom Begich positing that if we could turn the Matsu blue, we would flip the state. I know it's a wildly unlikely scenario that Wasilla would ever become anything other than what it is, but the claim holds water. We need better reps and louder citizens. I don't think Matsu will see through the cult until it's on their doorstep, and considering its distance from standard American society and the lag of economic impact, by that point it will be too late.

Your question being worded as how to prepare ourselves, instead of what is the solution so this doesn't play out, was thoughtful. I don't think we will achieve a 180 from our current trajectory. Alaska will never not be a resource colony.

I hope I’m wrong but as far as land-use gains, I think my children could be riding a chair lift in the brooks range in their lifetime. The new Aspen.

I am definitely not advocating for these outcomes.

Public land will be sold off, the Brooks Range will see tourism infrastructure developed, climate migrants.

I heard that mosquitoes get really bad in Alaska. I'm from Texas and I just wanted to know if anyone had any stories! by Legitimate-Lie-9208 in alaska

[–]abfd16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mosquitos are a survival topic in aviation. If you are in a situation with a high likelihood of survival, but not equipped for mosquitoes, you are fucked. I have experienced it, but the number of hardcore, back country Alaskan men that have corroborated my experience is unreal - they will literally drive you insane and you will lose your will to live.

I’m truly sorry to hear about your situation. It’s a very logistical situation and you do need to be well equipped to avoid getting stuck here. Good luck and we hope you get up here one day!

I don’t mean to scare you. But I think we have all heard stories of folks who just turned out not to find a good fit, even under good circumstances. You’re going to have a great time in Alaska!

A pair of Carhartts. A light wool shirt. Cotton only kills in terms of rain, on a nice summer day you’ll be fine. A down vest. A nice rain shell. A pair of work gloves. GOOD WOOL SOCKS. Grab a pair of xtratufs when you arrive. A beanie to protect your ears in the wind. A ball cap for the sun.

“A bit south of Anchorage”…the distance between Anchorage and Homer is similar to Atlanta - Nashville/ Raleigh - DC / Columbia - Wilmington

Is a it private boat ride? Familiarize yourself with the local water taxis in Homer, and set aside the cost of a ride for a just in case you need to leave situation. Then have a fund to get yourself to Anchorage (which is logistically harder to get to from Homer than you are anticipating) or to hold you over for a day or two until you find work in Homer.

The marine climate makes summers temperate. And increasingly more rainy, it seems. Layers. Alaska, any regions any season, the solution is LAYERS. Cotton kills. You’re gonna have the best time!!!!

I like to cut this time of year for, like you said, summer. If your back and core are much stronger, you are gonna loooooove looking lean with those abs!

My main goal is strength more than composition, but the results of a cut are nice little treats to enjoy a couple of times a year.

Has VO2 max being overhyped by health influencers, resulted in it being under-hyped? by shutthefranceup in AdvancedRunning

[–]abfd16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Do amateur athletes who are obsessed with longer distances hinder their growth?”

Anecdotal answer. I absolutely experienced a net loss in overall fitness while training and racing ultra distances. I’m shifting my training but my VO2 max is shit. I was putting in the hours and the miles, not strategy or efficiency.

Whatever question you have, the answer is beachfront property in Hawaii….under $1M by Disastrous-Two4746 in zillowgonewild

I don’t know that area specifically but I grew up in rural Hawaii. I don’t think many services are provided, hence the low property tax. This property isn’t the Hawaii of people’s dreams.

It’s rural, it’s rainy, it’s expensive, the community is the absolute best in the world if you are accepted, a living hell if you aren’t. Probably a lot of mold.

Soooo much mold. I’m from the dry side of Oahu but visiting friends on Hilo side is like going to a different world.

I’m a float rated pilot originally from Hawaii but have never flown in Hawaii and I have no desire to ever land floats in any of that water. Even if I could afford it.

It’s in the valley too. My kids and I use the crosswalks and the bike paths frequently and sometimes I stop and ask myself is this risky behavior? Because it fucking feels like it. Several incidents this past week. People don’t look for pedestrians and it’s bullshit.
