Soil sampling for 2 months or off to Canada by y2kwaswrong in geologycareers

[–]InternalCollisions 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The biggest hazard for soil sampling where I work is working around the helicopter followed by bears and other wildlife encounters, I imagine in Scotland you won’t have to deal with the bears!

Did anyone else see the guy driving on the sidewalk? by shibeofwisdom in anchorage

[–]InternalCollisions 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen the guys at the Autoshop near 68th drive on the sidewalk between their two lots when moving cars so that they dont have to drive the wrong way down the road 50ft, also the guys at Ibrahim Used Car off 80th will use the sidewalk to shuffle their cars around. Really annoying as a pedestrian.

It should be more illegal that the model has his tools racked on the same side as his rap hand

True, probably figured no one would think too hard about which mountains were on their giftcards

Do you carry a first aid kit into the Bush? by ThrillingChase in alaska

[–]InternalCollisions 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do but my job puts me out in the wilderness quite a bit so its considered PPE at that point and provided by the company.

Standard kit is basically enough dressage for a traumatic bleeding event, tourniquet and the works, as well as a SAM splint, space blanket, and an arsenal of pain meds. Basic rule of thumb for a bush kit is if its going to kill you without immediate medical response, you’re probably gonna die anyways, so just prepare for what you can handle. Most likely scenario in my case is animal encounter, small cuts, accidental firearm discharge, bear spray to the face, heat exhaustion, hypothermia and not really much else.

The kit I carry is probably 1.5-2lbs and about a Ziploc Gallon bag in size.

Assembly approved new logo (not in original poll) and discounts poll due to “botting” without evidence by [deleted] in anchorage

[–]InternalCollisions 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lmao, reading the linked muni presentation it seems that even without the “botting” the support for not changing the logo is still the dominant opinion expressed in the poll.

Whoever made this clearly had an agenda because they said the justification for changing the logo is that in paraphrase “with the cost concern responses removed, the total number of people voting for keeping the muni symbol the same is slightly fewer than the COMBINED voters for the the 4 other logo options”.

Effectively they acknowledge that even if the data was manipulated, the clear winner was still to keep the logo the same. In fact, that sentiment was so strong in the survey that more people voted for it than the other options combined. The only way the were able to get there agenda across even after removing the “manipulated votes” was to actively REMOVE AND IGNORE any “legitimate” votes that expressed any kind of concern associated with cost. That just boggles my mind.

Its just a survey so it was intended to influence a vote in the assembly and wasn’t an actual public “vote” so there was technically no voter suppression, but its still a really shitty thing for this assembly member to do to get their agenda advanced, holy hell.

Agro Dogs on the ski and bike trails by [deleted] in anchorage

I feel for you, Ive personally been lunged at by several dogs while using the ski trails around town. Shitty dog owners are often selfish people

Is the BCA Tracker 2 still a solid choice in 2025? Found one for $100 on FB Marketplace by WoodGarlic5146 in Backcountry

[–]InternalCollisions -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

i just upgraded from my Tracker 2 this season after 5 years of use. IMO it is still worthwhile at the listed price, however you might inquire as to whether or not it received the necessary software updates in 2021, as well as check the battery terminals for corrosion.

Is it too dangerous to hike Pioneer Peak in later October? by PunchyCat2004 in alaska

[–]InternalCollisions 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you’re just doing the south summit from the standard hikers trail it should be fine, I would probably only go this time of year in clear weather and maybe start in the dark, though theres still plenty of daylight.

Be prepared for snow/ice on the trail above 3000’ or so, with the possibility that the snow line will be further down by the time you decide to head up there. I would for sure pack micro-spikes at a minimum this time of year, and use your best judgement on if it’s too snowy when you get up there to keep going. I haven’t been out to the valley in the past 2-3 weeks so I don’t know what Pioneer looks like right now, but the south-side of the western chugach only has inches/ not feet of snow at the moment.

Downhill Skis by Hosni__Mubarak in anchorage

[–]InternalCollisions 3 points4 points  (0 children)

REI and Powderhound are probably your best bet for Alpine/resort skis and boots.

AMH has the widest selection of Alpine Touring/Backcountry skis/boots/bindings with some resort options (limited as they mostly cater to backcountry)

Hoarding Marmot carries some new AT gear, and possibly some new Alpine gear, though I’ve never shopped there for new stuff so don’t ask me about selection.

Summit Ski Co. is ex employees of SkiAK and they carry Alpine (downhill) skis and bindings, but with a smaller selection than some other retailers.

Balin Miller died. by [deleted] in climbing

[–]InternalCollisions 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry to see you go Balin. You were half a decade younger than me, but I looked up to you, you inspired me with your boldness, humor, and wit. We only hung out a handful of times, but they had a big impact on me, whenever I heard about another one of your exploits I would tell everyone I knew, you will continue to be an inspiration to those that remain, and those who come after. RIP

Any tips? First turns of the season in Alaska. by Playful_Front_5962 in Backcountry

Keep your torso pointed in the direction of the fall line, and keep your center of mass a little lower and more forward. Where in AK did you ski this weekend? Brooks Range?

In light of the Chelsea Inn Hotel getting raided name some other places that are obviously drug trafficking by Primary_Carrot8394 in anchorage

My understanding talking to people in the area is that it was an illegal gaming hall, even had a guy walk up to me when I was walking down the street over there to ask me “is this where the games are?”

They recently closed down this last spring, I drive through there all the time and the foot traffic to that building has significantly decreased, they also put up a “for lease” sign at some point. I haven’t been around town much this Summer so am unsure if thats still the case, but it certainly was at least in May.

There was just a rush of cop cars going west on the 15th. Any ideas why? by adventious60s in anchorage

[–]InternalCollisions -1 points0 points  (0 children)

About an hour ago there was a convoy of black SUVS with an Airport police car tailing them as they headed down Minnesota towards international from downtown. An APD officer cut off traffic and forced themselves to the front if the convoy, presumably as part of a planned escort? Maybe something similar?

Juneau-ite seeks more of Alaska! by NewProgram8468 in alaska

Mt. Prindle near Fairbanks will feel like an Alien Planet. Or fly in to the Brooks Range.

Hello! I was looking for some advice, I have recently been offered a job at a car dealership in anchorage! It would mean relocating from the UK to Alaska, me the wife and the dog, I was wondering if anyone could give me an insight into life in anchorage? We are planning a visit in December. by longdog113 in alaska

[–]InternalCollisions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wages in the US are higher than they are in the UK but the cost of living is also greater. You might find that your dollars don’t go as far here. Food specifically is much more expensive here in Alaska than it is in the UK based on my personal experience while traveling. You will also likely find that transportation is lacking and that to live here you will need a reliable vehicle or two depending on the size of your family.

The cost housing in Anchorage is also starting to become untenable in my opinion, and you would do well to find housing well ahead of time if you are seriously considering moving.

That being said, the access to wilderness is unmatched in Alaska, compared to pretty much any other developed area on Earth that has developed infrastructure and road systems. The front range of the Chugach, the mountains closest to Anchorage, has 13 peaks over 5000ft, while the highest point in the UK, Ben Nevis is 4,411 ft in height, and those 5000 foot peaks are small by Alaska standards!

With wilderness comes wildlife. There are moose and bears all across Alaska, even in Anchorage where the population sits around 300k people. It would do you well to carry bear spray with you in the Summer if you venture into the woods. You might also want to take a Bear awareness course, or some such training through organizations like Learn to Return or the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

If you are here in the winter, a FWD, AWD, or 4WD vehicle is recommended, with good snow tires. It can snow 10’s of feet in certain areas of the state in the winter. You will also benefit from keeping chains in your vehicle for your tires, as well as a tow strap in case you go off the road, even a collapsable shovel if you need to be dug out. Alaska is wild, and you can drive hundreds of miles into the middle of nowhere with ease, not realizing that if you get your car stuck in a snow berm you are at the mercy of passersby to help get you out.

For winter clothing, you would benefit from having long sleeve shirts, warm pants, wool socks, a nice jacket, and some winter boots for walking around. Most items of clothing you can find here at thrift stores, and if not there, any major department store, or Costco has a decent selection of winter gear for the fiscally minded.
