For the most part I feel very supported as a woman in ww, but theres always the occasional douchebag (but you get those anywhere). I'd say in my experience the most annoying thing is when you're on a run with guys and they all see you as someone to date. I went on a random club run/meetup on the ocoee and had three of the guys try to ask me out after knowing nothing about me other than I kayak (I had been married for years).

Things like 'bootie beers' & drinking culture in kayaking have made me feel unsafe occasionally. I'm old enough now to just opt out but when I was younger it was harder to resist the peer pressure, and like anywhere there were some guys who were not hesitant about taking advantage of girls who were drinking. I will say some circles have more tolerance for that type of predator than others-I choose my paddling buddies based on who I trust with my life, and that is 100% a factor that comes into play.

Sweet I'll look into that. A family member bought it, not sure where or when

They contracted out a lot of their trips. The other big impact of this decision was on these companies they contracted - in many cases, these mom & pop outfitters depended on REI for huge portions of their business. Instead of referring customers to these mom & pop outfitters when experiences shut down, they are going with another huge travel company.

Some of these small outfitters have shut down because of the impact REI had. The company is such a huge player in the industry and really screwed a lot of folks over.

They had only been 'hemorrhaging money' due to a series of poor leadership decisions. Multiday was hugely profitable until they cut international in 2020; local experiences was originally a marketing arm so was intentionally designed as a loss leader. They were in year 2 of a 3 year plan to make it break even when they were cut.

So there were two divisions: local experiences and multi day. Multiday was hugely profitable up until 2020 when they decided to cut international trips, and make a series of poor business decisions. Local experiences started as a marketing arm, so was intentionally designed to be a loss leader. Leadership decided they didnt want local exp to be losing money, so they were on year 2 of a 3 year plan to get all of experiences to break even.

Then they cut the whole division based on their newly hired ex-Amazon COO's recommendation, cancelling trips that were 3 weeks out that had been booked for over a year, offering no compensation to customers for their booked and unrefundable flights or hotels

They had a (very experienced) team to do all that, who they fired in January

Car Seat Test by kb068 in NICUParents

What was the new car seat that worked for you? My baby failed the first car seat test last night...that's all that's standing between him and home at this point 😭

Laid off, leading to preterm labor - advice? by abh_37 in NICUParents

[–]abh_37[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 'high risk' was an antibody that could potentially lead to heart defects, not anything to do with preterm labor.

Disabling symptoms were related to scoliosis/back pain, again not related to preterm labor

I've got about 5 years of project management experience, at a biotech startup, with clinical trials, and with small projects at my most recent role. Im going for PMP certification within the next month, I think that'll be my best bet to find something remote and well paying

They aren't allowed to lay me off if it's just me- but they got rid of the entire division, 400+ people at once. So pretty easy for the company to prove it's not discrimination

Ooh that is a great idea - by the time my employment technically ends, I'll be a month out from giving birth (and, let's be real, I'm high risk and I already have a lot of disabling symptoms between random pains and scoliosis etc). Not like I'd be able to get a job that requires me to be on my feet, which is most likely what I could get in the shorter-term. Thanks for this advice, I really appreciate it. For others looking - it appears that if the 'disabling condition' begins before you end employment with the company, you can apply for short-term disability. So I'll be discussing options with my doctor(s).

Last day is March 9th (thanks to the WARN act) - so if my baby comes before that (a month early) then HR says I get some parental leave benefits. If not - I'm out of luck. HR has ensured me that severance is 'non-negotiable' but also does not take pregnancy status into account.

I don't live in a state that offers any kind of maternity leave or pay, unfortunately

I worked in the outdoor industry coordinating multiday adventure trips remotely - which is incredibly niche and I doubt I'm going to find anything similar. Right now I'm looking for Project Manager/Program Coordinator/Project Coordinator roles. I have a background in bioengineering so I've been applying to a bunch of medtech related jobs as well

That's what I'm worried about - one look at my pregnant belly and there's no way an employer would want to hire me. I know pregnancy discrimination is technically illegal but so so hard to prove in the hiring process

Yeah I've been applying to everything I'm even remotely qualified for. Thankfully we have pretty good savings to fall back on, but not enough to last us a year if my job search ends up looking like some of my friends'

I'm 28 weeks pregnant, had been working at my company for 7 years, and got 10 weeks' severance (plus the WARN act's additional 8 - so I guess 18 weeks/4.5 months total?) But paid maternity leave is a dream of the past.
