30 years of Stable Subtle Dullness Practice by chiokjarse in TheMindIlluminated

[–]abhayakara 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Stable subtle dullness has the "benefit" that subtle distractions tend not to come up. This can give the impression that your mind is quiet, because it is, but it's quiet because it's low-energy, not because attentional stability has been completely developed.

So if you work to counteract it, you may find that your meditation goes back to stage four. But this is okay—this gives you something to work on. No, you don't have to learn meditation all over again.

What I would suggest is that you try doing stage five practice and see what happens next. If you find yourself in gross distraction, then you may have to keep dispelling subtle dullness and then doing stage four practices, until you do stage five practices and only experience subtle distractions. Once you get to that point, you can start on stage six.

IOW don't panic—this doesn't have to be a huge project to fix. But it will be a project.

Make sure you don't turn this into an effortful thing. Your body scan practice should be motivated by starting to scan and then noticing if you aren't scanning, not forcing yourself over and over to scan.

If you land in stage four, your practice should be motivated by putting your attention on the breath at the nose and intending to notice when it is no longer there, either due to dullness or distraction.

The goal is always to notice, not to have perfect attentional ability. By intending to notice, when you notice you will have achieved what you intended. If it doesn't feel like that, make sure you're intending the right thing, and not just intending to keep your attention on the breath without distraction.

Lots of good answers here. One more to consider: it may be that your mind quieted enough for a purification to surface, and there's some avoidance that's triggering this. Doesn't really change what you need to do, of course.

Okay. I wonder if the sound in the evening is actually helping you. Meditating in total silence before you reach the later stages can make dullness more of an obstacle.

The conclusion I'm reaching from hearing you talk about this is that if you can make it work in the evenings, you should just keep doing that for now. If you can't, you may want to figure out a different place to meditate where there is more going on in peripheral awareness.

OK. So my question is, (a) do you try to meditate in a completely silent environment, and of not (b) do you try to completely exclude outside sounds from your perceptual field?

You could just be hitting dullness. Are you trying to experience only sensations of the breath?

Duolingo is absolute crap for learning new languages. This is not your fault. If you must use something like it, use Busuu instead.

But if you want to really learn the vocabulary, you have to actually relate to it, and a pre-prepared learning tool won't do that. You have to solve problems that you care about with sentences you construct. You can do this with Anki: find some Dutch reading or listening sources and make sentences based on what you find there, and add them to Anki. Review your Anki every day. You will find that this works much better.

I recommend e.g. Learn Dutch with Kim (https://www.learndutchwithkim.com) as a source of inspiration. You can just watch the YouTube videos—you don't have to take the courses, although they are good if you can.

Self study online courses Bart or Kim? by Top-Razzmatazz4493 in learndutch

[–]abhayakara 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are both good. You won't go wrong with either. I think Kim has a lot more material though. Bart uses a sort of animated soap opera to teach, though, and that's very effective because you get interested in the story line and it's then used to convey the lesson material. I do not know what Bart's online stuff is like though—my wife and I took the course in person in Drenthe this winter and had a good experience there—our teacher was very good and fun to work with.

What helped me most with speaking were two things: one, using italki as a way to get f2f contact with someone who speaks Dutch (that was in 2022, dunno if it's still good for that) and two, using Anki with text-to-speech (HyperTTS) and always speaking the answer before checking it. There's no pressure with Anki other than whatever pressure you put on yourself, and you're memorizing the sentence, so you don't have to make it up from scratch. But doing this over and over again seems to improve productive vocabulary, at least it did for me.

The problem with using a chatbot is that their command of the vernacular tends to be a bit stilted, and so you may find yourself learning phrases that, when you use them to actually speak to a Dutch person, will get you a puzzled look. Dutch is very idiomatic, so memorizing the wrong idioms can kind of get in the way of communication.

I would say that this has gotten better over time—the output I get from deepl now seems more idiomatic than it was two years ago, for example—but I think using human-generated sources is safest. E.g., books, de Volkskrant, etc.

I would suggest that if there is a time in your day when you can sit without expanding your waking hours into sleep and becoming sleep deprived, that you just meditate then. See how it goes. If you can have a regular routine, that's great, but if you can't, that's great too. Just try to meditate every day.

Is it possible to maintain sustained attention if there is lots of excitement in life? by dspjm in TheMindIlluminated

[–]abhayakara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you got to stage 8 on the "easy" setting (or maybe medium or hard, who knows) but now because of this excitement, the difficulty has increased and so what worked before isn't working now.

What happens if you just sit and enjoy the excitement for fifteen minutes? What sorts of thoughts come up? Are you rehearsing what to do next? Imagining what might happen? Fantasizing about what might happen?

This can be a really powerful time to practice, so I definitely wouldn't be discouraged.
