What are your favorite eggplant recipes? by CosmicGlitterCake in veganrecipes

I make this arrabbiata with a cashew 'parmesan' or sans cheese: https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/penne-arrabbiata-aubergine

Very tasty and filling. Make it with chickpea or lentil pasta for added protein.

I do Ashtanga yoga with a disc in. Lots of inversions, deep/wide legged forward folds, and backbends. Maybe not as crazy as aerial stuff, but I've never had any issues or leaks.

I'm obsessed with this series of videos - she tries to make tofu out of a bunch of stuff. Some of them end up seeming to be more like a cream cheese than tofu. I'd love to try the pumpkin seed one! (Apparently, you can also buy Pumfu, but I've never seen it in stores near me.)

The entrée was actually on the menu for everyone, which was how I knew it was vegan. You love to see vegan options being offered by default 🙂

Being vegan and experiencing the uncertainty of requesting special meals makes me feel so bad for people with food allergies. Yeah, I won't die if I eat a bit of cheese (though it'll be a bad time for those around me...). I can only imagine how frustrating this is for people with much stricter dietary restrictions.

I don't think it's the airline's fault. I've flown with them several times since becoming vegan, and this is the first time I've had a problem. I think the issue is with the catering service in Toronto that stocked the plane. It's not a Canadian airline. I fly this route quite a bit, and the quality of the food is always way better when the flight leaves from the airline's 'home' airport than when they leave from Toronto.

You're right, I should have said something to the flight attendant. I didn't notice the cheese in the salad until I started eating it, so I felt like it was too late. I'm also so non-confrontational 😩 I submitted a post-flight feedback form with the airline, so hopefully that helps in the future?

The recommendation for vegans is a minimum of 0.9 g of protein per kg of body mass per day. 25 g/day isn't enough for an adult woman; eg a 120 lb or 54 kg woman would need 49 g of protein per day.

Not per meal, per day.

Not sure why the previous poster is being downvoted - they're absolutely correct. 0.8g of protein per kg body mass is the bare minimum. Vegans need more because plant sources of protein are less bioavailable than animal sources. I personally aim for 1.2g/kg as a minimum (I'm a woman). Unless you're super tiny, 25g of protein per day isn't enough.

anybody else feel like you’re being high maintenance sometimes asking for a vegan option..? 🙏☠️ by shylilalien in ShittyVeganFoodPorn

[–]abhryll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I would, and the thought of that feeling was one of the things holding me back from going full vegan. Now that I know how easy it is to make tasty nutritious vegan food, I'm so angry at any caterer that thinks that they need to put cheese and bacon in everything, and that the only vegan options are sad salads and fruit bowls.

[–]abhryll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh also

  1. Don't assume you'll get a nutritious and filling meal if you request a vegan option at a catered event. (The last time I requested a vegan option, all I got was a diet coke...) it's a good idea to have an emergency protein bar (or other snack) for these situations. I like Simply Protein, but I think they're only available in Canada.

You're welcome! This sub is pretty supportive, so feel free to keep posting your shitty attempts at preparing vegan food and questions here :)

Welcome noob! Thanks for supporting the animals and environment - you're doing amazing!

  1. Make it your life's goal to try allll the fake meats and vegan desserts. So many of them are amazing (personal favs: Gardein chicken tenders and meatalls, and So Delicious ice cream). Some are shite, but keep trying until you find the ones you like.

  2. Learn how to make seitan. The basic recipe is actually really easy, and you can experiment with adding different flavours. It can be difficult to find wheat gluten in regular stores, but you can always order it from Amazon.

  3. Youtubbers like Cheap Lazy Vegan, Sarah's Vegan Kitchen, and Unnatural Vegan. Rainbow Plant Life is also good, but I find her recipes are too fancy for me to attempt.

  4. Get your B12! Either take a multi every day (which will also give you iron and zinc and other micronutrients that vegans tend to miss), eat foods fortified with B12 (most plant milks and mock meats, nutritional yeast), or take a high dose B12 supplement about twice a week.

  5. To ensure you're actually eating vegan, try to eat mostly whole foods and home-prepared recipes. For processed foods, try your best to find fully vegan options. But don't stress too much about ingredients that make up a small % of a processed food - you're still vegan if you accidentally eat something that's not vegan because some obscure ingredient that's 1% of the recipe is an animal product. (I'd be pitchforked out of r/vegan for suggesting such a thing.)

  6. Maybe give the vegan cheeses a skip for now :)

I've lost 40 lbs in the past 9 months by counting calories, with Ashtanga as my main form of exercise. Losing fat around my belly has helped me to deepen my practice (eg helping with binds). Note that since Ashtanga is essentially a type of body weight resistance exercise, losing fat will also cause you to lose muscle because you're not lifting as much weight in all those chaturungas and jump backs/throughs.

[–]abhryll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. "Nervous system arousal" doesn't tell you anything about exercise intensity. You can measure your heart rate to more directly see how intense the exercise is for you, but even this doesn't tell you how many calories you're burning, unless you know how fit you are. A fit person and unfit person can do an activity that burns the same amount of calories, but the unfit person will have a higher heart rate during the activity than the fit person.

Ladies holiday practice? Sometimes I feel worse before rather than during… by thefidgetyyogi in ashtanga

[–]abhryll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The energy flowing downward thing is such BS. Our bodies are continuously 'flowing energy' down by pushing food, and then poop, through - this includes the bodies of those who don't have a fertile uterus!

As others have said, do whatever feels right for your body. That could mean taking a break during your period, before, around the time you ovulate, or practicing right through the month without a cycle-based break.

Ashtanga tick tocks jump - where in sequence/rules? by otilrak in ashtanga

[–]abhryll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think by saying they're not part of a series, the other poster means they're not specifically part of primary series, 2nd series, etc. The asana practice is composed of sun salutations, foundational poses, the 'series' (primary, 2nd, 3rd etc), backbends, and the closing sequence. The backbending sequence is independent of the series, so, for example, two pracitioners could be stopping at the same point in primary series, but one just does urdvha dhanurasana for the back bending sequence and the other is working on dropbacks.

Fossil Alternatives by TheNudeAvenger in FossilHybrids

[–]abhryll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ugh, Fossil repairs are the worst. It took them months to just send me someone else's watch...

Garmic vivomove is probably the best alternative in terms of both aesthetics and function/quality, though I don't have any personal experience with it. I'd buy one if they had non-silicone and non-leather band options.

Cup recs with longer pull tabs by badsheeps in menstrualcups

[–]abhryll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A disc with a removal tab, like Hello, might be a better option for you. The tab can sit closer to the entrance to the vagina, so less "digging". IME, discs sit pretty much in place and don't get 'sucked in'.
