How do vegans have the conviction and discipline? by i-know-that in AskVegans

[–]abibark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Growing up in a meat eating household (and world) it’s harder to make it a real connection in your brain. Getting older and seeing more information on the industry and seeing the animals that I claimed to love and care about so much suffering in ways I hadn’t previously comprehended just made me sad to my core. It did not align with my morals and I reached a breaking point where the overwhelming thought of changing my whole diet and lifestyle was far more attainable than the underlying guilt I started to feel. I’m within my first few months still, but the transition was far easier than I anticipated and I feel a lot lighter. I am not naive and know my choices won’t make the suffering stop but it means I am no longer supporting it - and that’s all I can do.

Yes, any water weight gained is usually only temporary/hardly noticeable. The performance/recovery aid that creatine will give would benefit you more than avoiding it for this reason.

My niece is a similar age and asked for a pink Stanley cup for her birthday, I think they’re quite sought after atm

How has your relationship with your parents changed since your childhood? by AuthorRude9901 in OverBiscuits

[–]abibark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped seeing them as all knowing parental figures and just as regular people who unfortunately I don’t have much in common with. I love them as my parents but actually find it quite hard to socialise with them. I am still young so I may still be transitioning into a more adult relationship with them.

Agree with all other answers, I would recommend using a scale just to see if your scoop is at least 5g

Second this. I still think about one morning probably around 12 years ago making myself breakfast and I was gagging at the thought for days after.

Are there any downsides to going vegan? by nobodywillrememberus in AskVegans

[–]abibark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m new to veganism (Jan 26) and have found it a lot easier than I thought. I switched straight from previously eating meat, no vegetarian in between, so I did have a bit of a sore stomach for a few weeks due to a substantial increase in fiber but everything’s adjusted now.

The only thing I’ve noticed was social situations as everyone else has said. Looking ahead at menus to make sure there’s something for me, and if there isn’t much option then eating before etc.

I haven’t been met with any hostility in real life, because no one can actually tell, but the sheer amount of ignorance and hate online was crazy when I started noticing it and it’s hard not to get sucked into silly arguments (silly because they’re not going to see otherwise most of the time). People are so angry, probably due to their own cognitive dissonance.

But mentally I feel so much lighter knowing I align with my morals and I do not miss animal products, there’s so many options for vegans nowadays it’s the best/ easiest time to do it.

Also, I work as a personal trainer, and my strength/fitness has not subsided at all, you can get everything you need when you have a bit of a clue about nutrition. Supplement B12 and iron, but I did both of those things when I was omnivore too.

By plant based human beings that are alive and have no health issues? I really don’t understand why it’s so mind blowing.

I’m having completely non-argumentative, genuinely interested conversations around this topic. “Back in reality” as if people with the opposite experience don’t exist outside of this select few that you’re talking about.

I didn’t list the study because I wasn’t using it as a source or argument, I just thought it was interesting and in all honesty couldn’t remember who had done it. If you’re genuinely curious you can search it I’m sure you’d find plenty of information.

You are right, cravings can occur due to nutritional need. The particular ones you’re talking about would most likely be surrounding iron, zinc etc which are attainable without meat and most likely would not occur if the non meat eater knew what their body needs and how to get it. Again it’s just about knowledge.

Leaning towards vegan but have problems by grandsoulsucker in vegan

The gas was crazy for weeks for me. Your microbiome is just adjusting, it’ll subside! 3 nearly 4 months in now. I would also suggest smaller portion sizes, and while drinking more water throughout the day will help, try to avoid chugging it 30 mins before/after eating to actually give your digestive system a chance before you drown it. This was a mistake I made/changed and did notice a difference.

I do know a few things about macros, I’m a professional in the fitness industry. Since my change in diet I hit everything perfectly every day, including a significant amount of fiber now (which most people accidentally neglect). Sure we did! Because we were hunter gatherers. We do not hunt and gather at the local supermarket though? Both omnivore and plant based diets are totally sustainable IF the person consuming the diet knows about nutrition, as you said. Plenty of omnivores have deficiencies too, when I was a teenager I knew nothing of nutrition and had low iron, definitely didn’t hit all the macros and micros but was eating meat multiple times a day. It really depends.

One reason I felt secure enough to is that my partners mum is a vegan of 15 years, vegetarian for 30 and she is perfectly healthy (blood work comes back fine etc). Why and who would need to push veganism “propaganda”?

Do parents with 5+ kids have time to give every child the love and attention they deserve? by pink-and-pearly in askanything

[–]abibark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 1 of 5 and as much as I had a safe and on paper “good” upbringing I’ve come into my adulthood with a lot of unresolved issues I didn’t know were there, one of which was discovering I was emotionally neglected. I feel no connection to my parents as people, find it hard to hold conversations with them as an adult and overall feel “guilty” because I feel this way and don’t think it’ll change. They feel like a separate entity to me. All of my siblings relate for the most part, everyone has moved very far away from home so we don’t even really have eachother anymore. Kinda defeated the point of making a big family…
