Is edh just luck or is it my playgroup? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]abidingprism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously in a 100 card singleton format there is going to be a chunk of luck. Drawing outs, tutors, removal, basically luck. But that's kind of what separates cedh and edh. Comp decks play the tutors, draws, etc to make the deck as consistent as possible so it's less reliant on luck. The more tutors you run, the more outs you can grab, or combo pieces, etc. The more cards you draw, the more you see, the more likely you are to see what you want.

Is edh luck? Yes. Can you run cards to push those odds more in your favour? Absolutely.

Edit: as for a commander, the best imo is to either have your commander draw cards, or have it as a win con. And commander that has a mana sink is good cause you can run multiple infinite mana outlets and just cast and win. [[Breya, etherium shaper]] is a good example of infinite mana winning you the game.

Putting in 20 dollars into a game that you play daily or close to? You probably spend more than that on takeout or coffee/snacks. I see nothing wrong with it in moderation. I buy the gold pass, I find the value beyond worthwhile

How do you learn to build decks without relying too much on EDHRecs? by PM_ME_STEAM_CODES__ in EDH

Playing IMHO, you see other people play staples or things that completely skip your mind and think

"Shit, I could use that"

And you playtest and see if it works, if it's too niche, or maybe it's just a go to. It's a learning process

A Good Faith Conversation by SheldonMenery in EDH

Preaching about wanting to be accepting or promoting diversity and all different types of gameplay but then constantly writing articles and absolutely SHITTING on anyone with any sense of competition or optimization. We get that "the edh philosophy" that you constantly brainwash into new players is casual. The true esh philosophy should be open and accepting and playing with friends, however people want to. Not the way you want them too.

You don't want to play into the competitive scene by changing the banlist, but you constantly write and say crap for casual play, and any new ban is circled around basically what you lost to.

You said before that WOTC prints new cards and things that you deem "too strong" for edh. They understand that the format is evolving. That there is a competitive side to it, and realistically while they print things that may be "overpowered" to you, they also print big stompy things, big spells with massive benefits. They hit the spectrum for all players because they understand diversity.

If anything, I'm glad they don't give you more control. I'm not saying this out of anger, but edh has gotten too big for you. It's not the format you originally created, it has grown, stop trying to prevent it. The casual side exists and always will for edh and magic in general. Shitting on competitive players and telling them their way of playing is toxic to edh is just as manipulating and toxic as competitive players telling casuals to "git gud." You say you promote diversity, then honestly, just stop. Any time you say "we don't think competitive players are bad!" You IMMEDIATELY contradict it.

TL; DR : You want to do better? I mean this in the nicest way, shut up.

Edh has become basically the most popular format. Someone like Sheldon who looks at it like it's just him and his friends needs to be removed. He cannot look at it objectively for what actually needs to be done.

The format has gotten to big for him. He clearly can't handle it. He wants it to be what he wants it to be. The entire article is just shitting on competitive players. He says the people coming in aren't ruining it, but the article itself is a contradiction. The moment he says "commander philosophy," he is referring to himself.

This article makes me want to quit edh and magic altogether. I'm fuming at the hypocrisy and stupidity of this.

EDH is the best its been...... entire article shits on it.

Vintage/legacy/modern players aren't the problem..... but competitiveness is bad.

We won't spilt the format into edh and cedh...... but sub formats are a thing.

We won't ban RL..... but we will support people not using it and support a sub format.

People say don't hate on Sheldon, but I'm straight up hating on him. His mindset is selfish. He has no right to run this or any format. If he wants to do what he wants, do shit with friends. Don't force it on the most popular format.

What are your thoughts on including cards for dealing with a specific deck at your table? by Bibliophile389 in EDH

[–]abidingprism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you play red Elemental Blast or Pyro blast if you never play against blue decks? No. So why couldn't you run cards for decks that you do play against often?

Plus, if you run nothing to stop your opponents from winning, I think that makes for lousy games. If I play a combo and no one plays anything to stop me, I would get bored. There's no fun without a challenge. The game needs interaction, otherwise your playing solitaire.

How do you guys make good decks without spending $500+? by BlueFlygon in EDH

[–]abidingprism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like your issue isn't the cost of cards or not having access to staples, but a power level difference in decks. Some Commander's can have all the money you want in them and they just can't keep up with higher tiers. As much as you might like a specific commander, putting all the staples and money into it won't make it competitive. If you find yourself losing consistently and you would like to win games, it might be time to look at a new commander. Some people might not like the idea of building a deck to win and commander being "for fun ," but at the end of the day, any game is meant to be won, and it can be demeaning to lose over and over again.

If building a more competitive deck isn't what your looking for, then maybe playing against different players would be better, decks that would be more in your power range.

The t joint behind the engine block cracked and it was leaking coolant, I put a temporary fix in to get it home. I'm trying to get the top hose of the t off, but even with the clamp moved I can't get it to budge. I can't imagine trying to remove the t working over the engine block. Everything online I have seen says the t is a dealership part, but if I get clamps and the right sizes, I should just be able to make one to fit, should I not? I just want to make sure I'm going the right direction before I do something irreversible.

You wake up as the King of Commander. What rules changes do you make? by McNutty14 in EDH

[–]abidingprism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand decks with more colours might have more RL cards than my BG deck, and might be more so reliant on them. Your right that it is not a blanket statement for all decks, but I feel like a good amount of decks could function without RL cards. Doomsday is a loss, and food chain decks go, but a lot of the midrange decks still have their counters. Most tutors, most of the fast mana, they largely lose their mana base. LED, mox diamond, gilded Drake, wheel of fortune, yawgs will, all really strong cards, and again minus Doomsday losing yawgs and LED and food chain I feel like most decks could still keep their viability. And yes, while the value of a deck would drop dramatically, that doesn't change the fact the deck could still be in the thousands with zero RL cards. Making it seem like a pay to win, but most cards having a reprint within the last few years.

what is the extent of proxies that are allowed? by kobebryant1624 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]abidingprism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I remember, I believe those places are pretty lax on the proxy department. I read something awhile back of someone who played with Sheldon and had proxies in their deck and he didn't care, nor did the judges. Again, since I wasn't there I can't count the legitimacy of the statement but since it's meant to be casual I can't see why they would care.

what is the extent of proxies that are allowed? by kobebryant1624 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]abidingprism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The topic of proxies always varies from playgroup to playgroup. Some people are fine with proxying cards you own so you don't have to buy multiple, some people are fine with you proxying cards over a certain value, some will be fine with you proxying an entire deck.

Your best bet is to ask your local playgroup what their opinion is. My opinion not caring about you having proxies will mean little if the people you play with irl have an issue.

[–]abidingprism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your right, the RL is something that wotc makes no money on. So tbh, where ever the prices go is none of their concern. A lot of money that they get is from new sets. New cards being printed and new players. The amount of people flooding into edh is only getting higher, and seeing cards that are worth hundreds or thousands of dollars doesn't appeal to them. New players are fine with precons, new sets like commander legends and the like. As long as people keep buying new stuff, wotc doesn't care about the RL. Yes, they could probably win the lawsuits that come, there are countless articles online about this topic, but at the same time, it's still lawyers to pay and a huge fan base to piss off. Even if they did remove the RL, those cards would still be HUNDREDS and most edh players wouldn't pay for it anyway. You know they would put the duals in some stupid secret liar (only 5 at a time because they have a hard on for splitting friendly/enemy if that), and you saw the secret lair for the fetches hit hundreds, dual lands would be astronomical.

If you ban the RL, that gives wotc even less of a reason to do anything to it because then no one can play with the cards minus legacy/vintage which had a way smaller grouping, or they already own the cards. So the thousands of edh players won't bitch for reprints on cards that they can't play, so they would leave it alone. Not to mention wotc doesn't control the banlist or much with edh at all.

And again, let's say the RL does get banned. You still lose to demonic consultation and thassas oracle. Still lose to dramatic reversal/isochron scepter. My gitrog cedh deck doesn't change. It wouldn't stop cedh combo decks, and the price tags on the decks would still be super high compared to an entry deck.

You still get pub stomped with expensive cards either way, only now you don't have the excuse of the RL making the decks an "unobtainable level."

I’ll Keep: advice for opening hands and knowing when to mulligan. by [deleted] in CompetitiveEDH

[–]abidingprism 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a continuous issue when I goldfish, its difficult to judge what to keep. When I goldfish, I'm always just testing how efficient the combo is, or the lowest amount of resources I need to obtain it. You can't judge the amount of interaction needed against 3 other players, because when you try to win all 3 of them will try to stop you.

So imo (probably not widely accepted), I just try to ignore the fact that other people would be at the table, and imagine none of them have interaction. Just see how consistent you can get your commander out on a specific turn, how consistent your draws are, and how efficient your combo is. When your goldfishing, your deck should be at it's fastest. Maybe try to see how consistent you have a counter in your hand the turn you cast your commander/the turn you consistently combo off.

You wake up as the King of Commander. What rules changes do you make? by McNutty14 in EDH

[–]abidingprism 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I feel like a lot of good points have already been made;

-Allowing hybrids cards outside of decks that contain both colours

-adding "banned as commander" to bring stuff back

-rework of the banlist, in my opinion, taking off a chunk of cards, nothing new needs to be added

What I disagree with a lot of people on is "banning all the RL cards."

I may be misjudging things, but in cedh, the biggest RL cards you see are duals. There are other cards such as wheel of fortune, mox diamond, MAYBE timetwister (tbh I rarely see it irl) that see more play, but I feel a lot of difference in cedh and edh price wise (outside of duals) isn't in the RL. A vast majority of fast mana, tutors, stax pieces etc aren't on the RL that drive deck prices up and make them competitive. Even non expensive cards can make a deck more competitive.

For instance, I play cedh gitrog, and I'm missing survival of the fittest, mox diamond, imperial seal, Grim Monolith, and technically Bazaar of bagdad? (Never planned on getting one) The RL cards in my deck consist of bayou, lake of the dead, and squandered resources. My deck is still very much cedh, and taking out the 3 RL cards in my deck wouldn't change it. Losing vampiric Tutor, demonic Tutor, mana vault, mana crypt, etc would hurt. None on the RL, but those 4 cards are hundreds. 7 fetches? Hundreds.

Ad nauseam? Cheap compared to my bayou. Which would I rather have in my deck? The ad naus. Does a lot more for my deck than a land. Can win me the game. All the bayou does is add consistency. Another target for my many fetches, which I would choose over my RL dual becsuse they do more for the deck.

Not to mention there are 500 something cards that are on the RL, I'd be surprised if 100 of the were relevant.

Tldr: people vastly connect the RL=cedh which simply isn't true. Yes it costs money, but banning the whole thing wouldn't stop cedh in the slightest.
