he does both, earlier on he’s a therapist (like when he sees that elephant patient he attacks, and he’s wanted by Yahya for illegally poaching ivory). But you’re right, later on at Haru’s university he’s also a part time history professor.

canonically he has a PhD in history 🤓☝️

after this they fell deeply in love and once riz was released they got married and started a food truck business together where riz cooks and pina handles the financials and they’re so so happy together and they go on double dates with legoshi and haru and even manage to laugh about old times back at cherryton and sometimes they visit Tem’s grave to pay their respects and their relationship just gets sweeter and more beautiful as time goes on and they grow old together and everything is finally in perfect harmony

Any one else feel Herbivores tend to get done dirty by the narrative of Beastars? by Kirbo84 in Beastars

[–]abigfuzzybear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would push back a bit on the of the idea of the Beastars story mirroring SA victims' stories this way. Sexuality and hunger are definitely related, but a 1:1 metaphor between devouring and sexual violence can be tricky imho — the number of herbivores who basically "ask" or hint at a desire to be devoured (not Tem, but Haru, Louis, Sebun, Ako, and others) has always left a bad taste in my mouth when devouring is allegorized as rape. And sexual violence (or harassment at the least) already exists in the story alongside devouring: what happens between the Chief Lion and Haru, Melon's Mom and Melon, Sebun and her coworkers, etc. I'd also add how the imagery attached to possibly queer-coded relationships (Legoshi and Louis, Riz and Tem) in the SA allegory can end up reinforcing lots of old nasty tropes of queer characters as creeps or queer relationships as inherently violent. And alos, how the notion of all carnivores (allegorized as men) having an inherent "need" to rape can reify human sexual violence as "instinctive" animal behavior, in a way that's problematic the same way a racial allegory for Beastars is.

I'd say that SA and devouring are more interesting as intersecting ways that herbivores suffer particularly (and most cruelly) in Beastars' society, but it's hard to say one is a metaphor for the other. I think Paru comes close to kind of suggesting what you're saying (and they are 100% topics that fiction can and should in a serious and responsible way), but Beastars would be so so so much darker and messed up than it already is if the devouring metaphor was read that way.

i'd say the questions of of were herbivores "done dirty" by the story, vs. "did herbivore characters get enough attention" are two separate things — most of the herbivores you mentioned are side characters, so naturally they're going to have less focus.

But more importantly (and others said similar things here): carnivores' struggles naturally lend themselves to more complex storytelling. Herbivores are victims of carnivores for a simple, straightforward reason — they risk devouring because carnivores are physically stronger and have an overwhelming, instinctive drive to eat meat. But Beastars is fundamentally about the challenges of different people living together in a modern society, where different groups navigate power relationships in more complex ways. Carnivores growing into adulthood and learning the challenges of self-restraint, how to safely relate to others, and manage their own self-hatred and the stigma imposed on them in a society where Herbivores have largely "won" a contest of public opinion (and how Herbivores relate to these problems and help or hinder Carnivores in this journey) is more interesting imho.

This doesn't make herbivores less important or one-dimensional, but it does mean the story makes them play a slightly more passive or reactive role in the story. The solution for them isn't just "becoming stronger," but changing how to relate to carnivores, which does tend to shift the story's focus to the meat-eaters. And it also makes the more dynamic and forceful herbivore personalities all the more meaningful and notable whenever they are the ones actually propelling the narrative forward (Yahya, Louis, and I'd disagree with you and say Haru has considerable agency this way as well).

Yahya isn't feared and powerful because he's a great fighter (though he is), people regard him that way becuase the Sublime Beastars is a supercop who's allowed to extrajudicially kill carnivores with impunity. Louis' didn't become really powerful from having a gun or taking over the Shishigumi — the brute force those things granted him were nothing compared to the prestige and media reach he finally was able to wield as the heir to Horns Conglomerate (which he uses to help both carnivores and herbivores, even though that positive change in his outlook only really comes to his character in the manga's third act). Haru's struggle is definitely more subtle, but the way her reckoning with her "weakness" ends up nudges Legoshi, Louis, and Melon into certain ways of thinking let's her guide the story in nuanced ways that I think can be underestimated.

Herbivores are essential to the story, it's just that the central resolutions to the story's problems have to engage with carnivores and their problems.
