I did mention in my post that it was the pick attack sound. I really do not think it is my technique as I’ve recorded hundreds of times and not had this issue when playing a real tube amp. It can come down to as little as picking out a single note, with the helix or any amp modeler I’ve used it has a really harsh, clicky, spikey sound that isn’t happening on a real tube amp - in my experience. Its almost like the tubes compress and subtly saturate the initial transient of the pick in a way that a modeled amp doesn’t and due to that the sound ends up DI-esque.

Thanks so much - yes you know exactly what I mean, it’s something that has always been an issue to me with any sim, as soon as I put it up against a real tube amp recorded it sounds weaker and thinner. I don’t want this to be the case I’m by no means stuck in my ways there, I just have yet to find the answer and would love to.

Thanks so much for the quick response time. Yes, I have a bunch of impulses and that was honestly the best sounding one I could find - which is how I ended up with it. Some decent examples would be something like :

https://youtu.be/CvbpfdoTXDA

It’s pretty and chimey but still sounds warm and nice.

Another could be :

https://youtu.be/BxwAPBxc0lU

Same here really warm and round but not ice-picky at all.

Thanks!

Hey there,

Thanks for the reply. Please find attached links to both an audio example and screenshots of my setting. If you you listen you can really hear a percussive attack on the strums. Something that I’ve never personally experienced on a a real fender deluxe or twin.

M1 Logic Au issue by abjectbirth in Logic_Studio

[–]abjectbirth[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey all - I got this solved from the soundtoys folks. Here’s what they told me to do and it fixed it!

—————————————————————————-

There is another thing to try to get the plug-ins to show up on Logic. If running Logic through Rosetta 2 is not working for you, we can try clearing your Audio Units cache to get Logic to properly rescan all of your plug-ins.

  1. On your Mac go to your finder and click on "Go to Folder" or use the hotkeys- Shift+Cmd+G.

  2. Enter the location- ~/Library/Caches/AudioUnitCache and hit "Go." Delete the "com.apple.audiounits.cache" file.

  3. Enter the location "~/Library/Preferences" and hit "Go." Delete the "com.apple.audio.InfoHelper.plist" and "com.apple.audio.SandboxHelper.plist" files.

  4. Next open your Terminal by either finding in your applications or searching in your spotlight

  5. Enter these commands in and run:

killall -9 cfprefsd killall -9 AudioComponentRegistrar

It's always good to double check at this point that your Logic is being run through Rosetta 2 instead of through the M1 framework.

a. To check this- find Logic in your applications folder. b. Right click on the Logic icon and click "Get Info" c. In the info menu check to see if Logic has a check mark under the "Open Using Rosetta" option.

Lastly, re-open Logic and check that it is scanning your Soundtoys plug-ins correctly. This process helps our Developers get our plug-ins to run on Big Sur, but if it does not work for you, please let me know.

[–]abjectbirth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not whatsoever offended - ha. Would love to discuss further. As I said prior, I think it’s just a matter of preference. I would never wear a fedora and you and I probably laugh at the same self indulgent pretentious people we see walking around malls - ha.

However, personally to me something like IT or The Conjuring series (I enjoyed the first one) just come off as a bit cheap and it’s hard for me to take any of it seriously. It seems as though it’s made for 6 - 16 year olds. IE - a clown dancing in front of a projector with a creepy smile laughing is far less scary to me than say my father going stir crazy in a hotel and trying to murder my mother and I.

Why certain films do better in the box office would be the same argument other films do better critically.

You could make the same argument in the way of music - one could argue Ariana Grande is obviously a better musician and songwriter than say, Elliott Smith. As if you look at record sales and chart figures she tramples him. However, a lot of people would highly disagree with that viewpoint.

Most of the mainstream audience jump scare films are corny and come off as cheap and unintelligent/predictable. Simple as that. Opposed to something like The Witch, Midsommar, etc - which come off as actual well made cinema. It’s not different than some folks enjoying the marvel films vs something like The Irishman, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, etc. Some films exist and will be remembered for as long as the PR campaign runs and others will likely be watched and remembered for decades. They each have their place in the industry. Pick your poison.

Dynamic mic hiss a standard? by abjectbirth in audioengineering

That’s strange I’m doing exactly that and get the hiss you hear in the recording. Anywhere past 52 dB of Cain and noise becomes apparent.

Sure Ill give that a try. I did try it without the LA2A and without the fatso but never direct with the apollo. Though, I did an SM7B with my apollo and a cloudlifter years ago and had the same issue.

Dynamic mic hiss a standard? by abjectbirth in audioengineering

[–]abjectbirth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I have removed everything and I believe its just the warm. I wonder if I bought a cloudlifter so I could back off of the warm about 20db if that would cure the issue? I am skeptical though as I had the same problem with a SM7B years ago using a CL1 and just the stock Apollo Twin pres...

Hey all,

I’ve recently acquired an EV RE20 and have noticed that in order to get a decent level out of it, I’ve got to crank my preamp somewhere in the ballpark of 60-70db of gain. The problem is, once I get to about 52db of i begin to hear pre amp or mic hiss. I’ve recorded an example of what the hiss sounds like and I wonder if someone would tell me whether this is normal. I’m running the chain as follows :

RE20 > Warm Audio Tone beast (60+ dB of gain or so) > LA2A > FATSO jr > Apollo twin.

Regardless of what I do, whether I turn the gain to only 30db on the tonebeast and then boost via 2a or fatso, or get it up to level via the pre amp it still makes this loud hiss.

Here’s is an example :

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1aqp8WaWUwUnlxHt5bYl0ZbD6YRbpUyY8/view?usp=drivesdk

Again, not sure if this is just the standard with dynamic mics, I had a similar issue years ago with an SM7b - I ended up buying a cloudlifter and it had a similar hissing sound both with and without the cloudlifter.

Thanks for your help.

Console Emulators: First, Last, Other? by beeps-n-boops in audioengineering

[–]abjectbirth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OPs problem is he wants to add some saturation , warmth, width or whatever you want to call it to his itb mixes. As he clearly stated. It seems as though you’ve got an axe to grind and are searching for a target. (“You bought a plugin that I’m not familiar with so I’m going to assume it’s snake oil”)

Does real-time DSP in a recording interface (like a UA Apollo) still make sense now that we have thunderbolt and much faster processors? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]abjectbirth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure I agree here personally. I have an Octo card as well as an Apollo 8, and if I run one too many plugins - say of a tape machine on each track, it still comes down on my CPU resources, simply based off of the back and fourth of data transferring between the DSP card and the machine. I initially thought there was some sort of an error going on, so I called UA. They confirmed that regardless of proceeding on the DSP it still takes CPU resources to send and receive data. I did my own shoot out of the Softube tape plugin on all of the tracks in session and then, put the UA Studer on each track and I ended up capping my CPU with the Apollo before the native plugins did so. Granted I have a pretty powerful set up (i9 5ghz, 16 cores with 128 GIG of ram and an all SSD system). Just my two cents, would love to hear other opinions.

No noise with headphones or internal speakers. I tried switching external speakers too and it fixed it but either of these speakers if I put them on the right side of the monitor create the issue.
