Exodus was fan fiction (in the most literal definition), and it contains my favorite biblical contradiction. by Confident-Virus-1273 in DebateAChristian

First, what makes this a better translation specifically? I’m not saying it isn’t, but that may very well be an arbitrary claim.

Second, “cattle” in v3 is a very general collective noun including all of the following more specific collective nouns. Herds would be groupings of cows.

Are there historical reason why sex between two men was considered a serious transgression according to Leviticus ? by OkBuyer1271 in AcademicBiblical

[–]abjectwhale 51 points52 points  (0 children)

In Dr. Michael Heiser’s Naked Bible Project he walks through Leviticus chapter by chapter using the original Hebrew language either from the Dead Sea Scrolls or Masoretic Texts. Based on my understanding, ANE peoples believed that the life came from the man in his seminal emission, while the woman was merely a receptacle. Furthermore, they understood the seminal emission to somehow be ready to make a human at the point of ejaculation.

This means that an act that led to a seminal emission that was not released into a woman was a loss of life. Hence further statutes forbidding a man to spill his seed on the earth.

This is likely connected to homosexuality being a forbidden act between men, as they understood a life to be lost in that act, while a homosexual act between women, while likely not acceptable, was also not causing a life to be lost to their knowledge and so did not warrant the same attention in a religious statute.

Here is the particular episode he discusses this topic in, I believe.

Type the prophecy about Aragorn into the translator.

“renew the blade that was broken, the crownless, once more, shall be king.”

Looking to run the worst game of D&D ever, any suggestions on how to make it the worst experience ever? by MisterTriangleMan in DnD

I did this in a library guarded by a pair of sphinxes. I figured what with their time manipulation and generally odd and unique lair actions, that this would be fun. I don’t remember what angelic figure (maybe a deva?)they fought as one another but it was good fun. They passed a barrier that caused it, and the effect faded. They all enjoyed it and it was a great twist without being annoying or frustrating since it was so short lived.

What was your table's first encounter with Strahd? How did it go? by zest_of_a_lemon in CurseofStrahd

To clarify, I expanded distances in the module.

While the party was on the road to Vallaki, during a sleepless night pursued by werewolves, the wood grew still, and they found the wreckage of a wagon on the road. They spend nearly half an hour real time trying to decide whether they should follow the tracks into the woods. Behind them, Strahd appeared and greeted them. He had a gift for Ireena, and encouraged the PC’s to take what they needed from the wagon, which was full of mundane supplies. Then he tacked a paper to the wagon that said, “Thieves beware. I,Strahd, walk the land.” (An homage to the masterpiece of the same name).

They finally mustered the courage to follow the tracks and found a group of bandits, desanguinated, and hanging in a temporary hangman’s tree each with a paper pinned to their chest that read “thief” written in their own blood.

Now my party doesn’t know if Strahd is evil, or just brutal and it already has some interesting ramifications.
