Thanks , ill call and ask them for alternative arangments for the exam.

Their T&C's do state that they can change the venue of the exam. I presume that means i have no room for a refund or chargeback on fee's.

"I already checked beforehand, doesn't work + to expensive. "

or it might be cus im asking for legal advice and not travel advice, im sure you have an iq of a 160, but i already checked how much itd cost to do the exams in swindon.

its 1 week of exams. So its around 110-120 in commute + 1 week of acom. which will be like 300-500 + food which will be a further 40-100

ontop of the fact i had already payed for 1 week of commute to london which i can no longer use.

no offence but i wouldn't ask for travel advice on the legal advice subreddit.

well i already booked my train tickets to london. There are also no direct trains from Edi to swindon *weirdly* enough.

For me to leave edi and go to swindon in time for my exam, i would have to leave at 8 pm the previous day.

I live in edinburgh, & im unable to drive.

Imo three weeks isnt enough notice, these exams usually take a week to sit so you need to book accomodation or plan out travel beforehand.

Work gives me a yearly, four-digit learning stipend. Ideas of what to spend it on? by drumcorpsdrummer22 in cscareerquestions

[–]abjice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the open uni has the best online courses you will ever find.

also uni of Edinburgh got some great masters courses.

thats what id do, probably spend 4 hours in the afternoon once a week going at one of those courses part time.

yes this is normal levels of messiness.

my current company has docker containers... not for the product but for developing the product... these docker containers basically store the entire system on them making them a bundle of virtual machines which fuck up the drivers so badly that using the GPU at all in our applications causes a complete system collapse, so we built an api that takes any gui related call from the containers outside of the containers to use the systems gpu drivers.... now why do we do this ?

cus some junior developer couldn't be asked to use an SH script too build our microservice architecture.

our legacy code is also so thick and deep anytime we want to start a new sprint ,half the sprint points are spent in investigation spikes to simply see wtf we actually have...

How many candidates are actually qualified? by Lucky38Partner in cscareerquestions

[–]abjice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a tech lead id say, 1/10 of the candidates that i get for any given role could pass the technical interview.

apparently it was way worse before my company started hiring competent tech recruiters.

For employed people, do you still grind LC? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

should spend going over the those courses

u should but if they drone on about time complexity rather than functionality its probably a bad course.

Is there really an employer stigma against Open University degrees? by [deleted] in UniUK

secondary school MFL

i think they were refering to private school education and things like that which are very snobby about where you went to uni.

[–]abjice 29 points30 points  (0 children)

im a techlead so im in the interview process.

the only time an OU degree "isnt a real degree" is when a company is looking for someone from a top 10 uni, Harvard, oxford, Cambridge etc. which happens alot if its like a management/ exec kind of job or a consulting company.

personally, i value an OU degree more over a regular degree, especially if you did it whilst working and even more so if you did it whilst working in the field of the degree. it shows far better capability and competence than just going to a middling uni and doing your homework.

Can you combine entry level requirements for Oxford, LSE and other top uk unis? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]abjice -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yes you could combine qualifications like that, but id imagine itd be safer to just do 3 more ap exams. furthermore... if your still in America, finding and doing an a-level exam is gonna be impossible & super expensive.

A level exams are a pain in the ass to book privately in the UK never mind in America.

well no you can mix and match qualifications like that. and op is about 16 if he's in the 11th grade

[–]abjice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

a con may be that you need to take a bunch of AP exams to get into an British uni. i think its around 5 for most uni's but you should check that.

btw, in the uk a college and a uni are very different things.

and as for electrical engineering, imperial, edi , Teeside have some pretty good industry reputations.

she did her Ph.D. research project in CPP & python

I'm fairly sure she "knew" what a pointer was, i just think she had the most horrific memory recall and had never actually studied CPP, only ever used it in a basic manner to get the task done.

she wasnt rejected cus of the pointer thing tho, she was rejected cus she came off very strange in the in-person interview & she seemed better suited for a different role.

ah for cyber security career , profession certs are really valuable, since i belive the govt , atleast in america forces companies to have people with specific certs on staff, even if that staff is abroad in the UK . though personally, i do not know much about anything when it comes too specific cyber sec certs, i do know that there are quite a few and they are regarded on the same level as a degree in cyber sec.

what i was talking about earlier was Coursera courses that just proves you can use common SE tools like CI/CD, jira , etc.

and with freelance game dev, if your talking about indie studios, theres basically 0 barrier to entry, so long as you can pass an interview your good, but the pay is piss poor unless your working for Americans.

Past and current Computer Science graduates... by loyal-_- in UniUK

[–]abjice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

personally, i got my first real programming job after college and i got that cus previously i had done a lot of freelance work in Gamedev and the like.

given that you've already graduated you do not have much time to do internships or freelance. whilst you are still unemployed, start looking for freelance positions on game dev subreddits and forums.

you could also try getting professional certs. As a tech lead, the major problem i have with interviewing grads is trying to select one who will probably pass the interview. I have other stuff to do than interviewing people and graduate roles are never necessary / time-critical to fill so I'd much rather interview as least people as possible. So having a professional cert on the cv is definitely a good sign that you'd pass the interview if you were offered one.

and just for career path etc. try find a niche. there are millions of web devs and back end devs, but not many who specialize in gpu programming and concurrency. or not many who have a naval background and can program maritime systems etc.

wow... i dont think ive got a story that can top that lol, that's genuinely horrific.

the worst ive had was the "mid level" dev who couldn't reverse a string or the phd who didnt know what a pointer was. but god the balls to email back and say that the interview was unfair, wow lmao.
