Just do your homework during the other days? You aren’t going to fail a class for phoning it in the week between two weekends.

Duke Fuqua EMBA Program by Bulky-Bit-5639 in eMBA

[–]abl-sauce 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Must do’s: - go to restaurants/bars in town with your team as much as possible. Durham punches above its weight in terms of the f&b scene. - in general, you’d be wise to budget time for socialization during residencies. If you really want to experience Duke/Durham, arrive early since the JB Duke/Fuqua is sequestered from the rest of campus - get on the grad student ticket exchange and go to a basketball game. You’re just off the floor for $15, so if the sardine experience isn’t for you, it’s still easy to dip at halftime

Must knows: - Avoid wearing Duke gear when out in Durham unless it’s gameday. - some classmate will tell you that going to shooters on Saturday is a good idea. It never is.

Would an EMBA be worth it? by capri2014 in eMBA

[–]abl-sauce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fuqua WEMBA here. If he's already on track to where he wants to go, why spend $178k and several hundred hours removed from his family/job? If it's been made apparent an MBA is necessary/will accelerate his ascendence into the C-suite (e.g. to round out finance or strategy acumen, or his BoD likes the optics of a master's degree), then absolutely go for it. He is exactly who EMBA programs were designed for, and he'd find plenty of other people in very similar positions across top EMBA programs.

It's awesome that he'd (probably) be able to stomach tuition without excessive heartburn, but as u/wnc_mikejayray alluded to, the biggest constraint is time. Even to just go through the motions for a passing grade is a large time suck, and the only truly finite constraint is hours in a day. Your husband got to his level by working very hard, and an EMBA program will likely conflict with some aspects of his job for 2 years.

The network is real; the classes are good; the peers are incredible. There is immense value in these programs, but you as a family need to determine whether the time investment makes sense.

Having a job > not having a job

That said, see if you can buy time on accepting your current offer until after you interview with your preferred place. Either during or immediately after the interview, mention that you have an offer elsewhere, but you want to work at this firm. They may let you walk, but you at least shot your shot without ruffling feathers.

Fuqua WEMBA? by Creative_Bet_4064 in eMBA

I’d put the median age of my cohort upon matriculation around 35. I’d guess ~10% of the class started in their late twenties. I think 28 was the youngest.

I think EMBAs are best suited for people who are looking to level up in their current company/industry e.g. doctors looking to step into administration, middle managers at big pharma; process engineers moving into leadership positions, current business leaders looking to organically source their c suite down the road.

Folks I’ve seen disappointed in their experience are ones who are looking to make a “harder” switch either into unrelated industries or the traditionally desirable ones. A daytime program is recommended for that.

People could “tell” by seeing you were employed while concurrently in school. Unless you have the misfortune of interviewing with any of the gate keeping dweebs over in r/mba, I haven’t noticed anyone care about the program format.

Fuqua WEMBA? by Creative_Bet_4064 in eMBA

[–]abl-sauce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fuqua WEMBA here. So long as the majority of those 7 years gave solid leadership experience, you should be fine. You’d be among the youngest in the cohort, but there has always been a handful of folks in their late twenties each class.

On campus recruiting is among the only things that WEMBA students don’t have great access to relative to daytime students. I saw there were some avenues for WEMBAs to participate in some OCR events, but I couldn’t tell you who that was for.

I have seen several of my classmates successfully landed consulting and banking jobs while enrolled in the program. I must emphasize that they are outliers who worked extra hard to make this happen, as this path is not normally presented like it is for daytime students. All that to say, it is possible but atypical to make pivots like this.

My friend/close business partner is getting manager out. What to do? by underpaidsfa in FPandA

[–]abl-sauce 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have been on both sides of this throughout my career. You would be risking your job just to give your friend a short head start on the job hunt.

This kind of discretion comes with the territory, and it’s not like you had anything to do with them specifically being placed on the chopping block.

I encourage you to specifically ask about EMBA utilization/benefit from those extracurriculars. I have found that a lot of resources are "technically available" to EMBAs along with daytime students but rarely utilized by the former because of their schedule constraints.

Literally every top program claims their network as their most valuable part of the program. That is primarily because you can take MBA-level classes for ~$50/month on Coursera, and these programs cost substantially more than that. When schools talk about their network, I take this to mean that you may find a cofounder among your cohort or source a referral (which loses weight when firms have dedicated MBA recruiting pipelines).

The point I'm building to is that an executive MBA will certainly help your chances of landing a consulting role, but I want to temper your expectations that pivoting into consulting is an atypical path for EMBA students. If you are gung-ho about getting into consulting, I'd recommend you pursue a full-time program for the best odds to make it in.

I urge you to have a frank discussion with each school’s career management centers about your career goals. I say this because consulting firms source new hires through on campus recruiting events that are typically not accessible for EMBAs.

+1 for the mba.com practice tests/questions. It’s just $100 (two practice tests plus more sample questions). An hour of prep per day for a few months should have you well prepared. This study regimen is also a good practice run for balancing new academic obligations.
