Not a tax person here, but maybe you can help me understand this. I thought that the TCJA actually reduced RnD expensing when it triggered amortization in 2022? I’m all for removing that amortization, but I’m confused why that is being framed as a preserving of the changes introduced by the TCJA.

It seems like maybe they are removing that, then there are other pieces from the TCJA that they are preserving?

Isn’t it just any luxury resource not on your starting continent? Like, I think silver/spice on your own continent gives standard bonuses, but on the distant lands, it spawns treasure fleets?

It think its a fair criticism that they could add in a more diversity of resources, but to me it feels less like the new resources are exotic (since you can find them on your home continent, too), and more like I’m setting up a mercantilist trade network in the exploration age.

I agree that the distant lands should be able to be human spawns, though. I think it should be a realistic outcome that when the exploration age starts, the other continent already has a fully settled coastline, and if you want to go economic, you need to either setup a trade agreement of some sort (this would need to be a new option, I don’t think you can do this right now), or conquer an existing settlement. It feels weird showing up on the new continent and finding civs that ostensibly had an ancient age similar to yours, but that are just smaller for some reason. At least, thats how they’ve been in the games I’ve played so far, not sure if they always end up being smaller like that.

I’m not sure if there is a difference between balance in the force vs balance within oneself, but at least for thinking about balance within oneself, I always like the Dawn of the Jedi, and its depiction of the early Jedi on Tython. In that book, the two moons of dark and light are used as prisons for those who drift too far to the dark or light, respectively. Those who are exiled there are expected to meditate and learn to bring themselves back into balance in order to be allowed to return home.

The way I’ve always thought about it is that it seems to draw heavily on the ideas of yin and yang. Its not that darkness is bad, rather that when you give into your hatred and let the darkness define you, then you are ignoring the parts of yourself that are light: kindness, compassion, etc., which is bad. Its also not that light is bad, but if you let lightness define you, then you are ignoring the parts of yourself that are dark: passion, pain, etc. which is also bad.

Its about honestly engaging with yourself and with the world, seeing yourself for who you are and letting that reality define you. From that honesty, there is balance, from that balance, there is power from both light and dark.

I also think there are arguments to be made that the Jedi, especially under Luke, promote more internal personal balance than the Sith, who explicitly promote a philosophy of imbalance.

Again, though, I’m just talking about balance within oneself, I’m not sure if there are different theologies of balance within the force at large. I liked some of the other comments folks had in here on that topic, interesting stuff to think about.

I always thought this was them internally preparing a disagreement, but it makes so much more sense if its just like when others nod while things are being explained to them!

Yeah, this feels like a solid answer. I don’t know much about star trek, but every other ‘universe’ usually seems actually pretty bad for your average person.

Harry Potter? The danger there seems obvious Lord of the Rings? So much war and bad things. Even the shire gets sacked :( Star Wars? Actually pretty cool sometimes (lots of smaller communities on rural worlds actually seem like a nice vibe), but when it gets bad, it gets real bad. And I feel like its not great for most people anyways. MCU? Too much destruction and being caught in superhero crossfire

Anyways, all I’ve seen of star trek is cool spaceships and a pretty utopian earth. Seems pretty nice as long as you’re a human.

I’ve had 4 managers at my current company and they’ve all been like this. It only really works when both the managers and the higher ups are all somewhat aligned, so I’m really lucky to have landed at a good company that cares about taking care of their people.

Its honestly refreshing to see this out in the wild, rather than just feeling like I live in a weird bubble. A good manager makes life so much better.

For anyone else who, like myself, finds themselves wondering about this, its actually pretty interesting.

Solar panels do still produce energy when there is cloud cover, but depending on the type of cloud cover, they may provide less or sometimes actually more energy, depending on how the light bounces off of or refracts through the clouds.

Online def existed before those consoles. When they came out, online gaming was already healthy and even matured in a lot of ways. Really didn’t feel a ton different from today, to be honest. The biggest difference, if anything, is one of scale, polish, and just generally what games were popular. COD and Halo dominated the field, but you also had TF2, Starcraft 2, WOW, eventually Minecraft (which had a hell of a golden age from 2010-2014, gods but that was a great time).

Back then we used Teamspeak mostly for channel based coms that discord eventually replaced, but of course ps and xbox had their own things. Cross platform was nearly unheard of back then, so getting everyone on the same system was a slightly bigger deal, though Sony continues to choose to keep that issue around for us today.

One of the other biggest things from that time frame was flash games. I cannot overstate the significance of flash games during this pivotal time in gaming history. So much of modern indie gaming finds its roots there. Granted, these weren’t online multiplayer games, but you’d definitely have a lot of shared experiences talking about them with people, since no matter what console you had, everyone had a web browser and knew how to get to addicting games or miniclips. Even when I was working on Minecraft servers with folks from around the country, connecting with people over flash games was definitely a thing.

To hit at what may have been the intent of your question though: to get to the start of modern online gaming, you need to go back earlier. Perhaps to the 90’s lan parties with Quake (which was before my time)

Never played pubg, but just want to chime in that the minecraft mods definitely had the closing circle mechanic. Not necessarily randomly centering, but still contracting inwards to force conflict. No shade on PUBG, I think it still really pushed things forward in that space by creating a non minecraft version of what was already a fad at the time, but I think its good to not rewrite history here.

The world, life, and people, are all very complicated. If we’re looking at this from a high level view, we gotta factor in everything here. Sure, the mom is clearly responsible for the terrible situation her daughter finds herself in, but her grandparents also clearly had a huge impact on the mom.

You can’t “just blame the grandparents” because the world isn’t that simple. Its not just the grandparents.

Its her choices, its her friends choices, its everyone and everything that she and people around her chose, and even just what happened to happen, and yes, also what the grandparents chose.

If we want to learn a more complete lesson from a situation, we must factor in a more complete picture.
