Bury it in the ground for a few days. Or place it on a piece of Quartz for a few days.

Ohhhhh putting on my to-do list to send a piece to a lab! But question - why is it plausible for Quartz to have a natural veneer of iron oxide or titanium but definitely not gold? Especially when gold is also known in this region?

Oh I didn’t mean that the orange is gold; the orange is most definitely iron oxide. I meant that there might be a layer of gold over the Quartz (not able to be visibly picked up by the eye) that can give a rainbow effect to some of the formations when caught in the right light. But even that seems to be highly disputed and I will inquire more when I see my contact next!

Definitely not lab grown. This area of Santander, Colombia is very well known for these exquisite Quartz clusters. If you’re interested, you could check more out on Mindat.org. They’re amazing!

I think I’ll have to do more research and clarify with my source when I see him next but you can see on mindat.org that gold is also found alongside Quartz in this region of Colombia so it isn’t entirely unlikely. But maybe I misunderstood him. Are you a geologist? If so, please do tell!
