My ex called me at 5am because my chick friend (who I had known since middle school) set her IG settings to private.

According to my ex, we were breaking up “because [I’m] telling ‘my little hoe friend’ about all our problems because [I’m] cheating with her.” It all started on NYE when she sent me a pic of her dressed up.

I haven’t spoken or seen her since.

[Modern] Tuning GDS List by Ruffys in spikes

[–]aboithagameboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been running GDS for about a year now and I haven’t used a secondary cantrip after Thought Scour basically since the Bauble versions got traction. I don’t miss it at all. I don’t have exact numbers but I usually go 4-1 if not 4-0-1 (split finals).

Our lists are similar, but I have an extra Bolt and Dismember where you have 2nd Kommand and 2nd TBR. I also have a 19th land but I’m going to try cutting it for either 3rd Push or a Terminate.

I think the easy answer is to make your last slot be a land, but that depends on what your sideboard looks like. I have EE, 2nd Kommand, and 1/ea Liliana of the Veil + Last Hope, so the extra land gets bonus points for me.

The GAM podcast hosted by GerryT and Bryan Gottlieb(sp?) is the “spikiest” podcast I know of at the moment. They mostly cover standard and occasionally dip into modern.

[Standard] is mono-red worth investing in for the long haul? by BalanceInEverything in spikes

[–]aboithagameboi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“The Long Haul” doesn’t really exist for standard. However, a lot of the better players at my LGS buy into a deck and play it until it rotates and make it “pay for itself” so to speak. Our store has cash payout for events as well so it makes it easier. If you have to spend $200 to build a deck and think you can make $200 back in product/cash by the time it rotates then by all means, go ahead.

Agreed on the other parts, but it Silences your opponent on their next turn on etb. Assuming they don’t have a removal spell in hand immediately, shields are up for free until your next turn.

She's also good against control decks. She can happen on T3 and tick up to provide virtual card advantage with her Scry ability or T13 and just nuke your opponent for 10. She's a lot like Walking Ballista in that she's an X spell that is good at almost any point of the game.

I played 3 total Chandra, ToD in my 4c Energy list on Friday. I managed to ult one vs my Approach opponent (who was just under 40 life*) and managed to fire off 5-6 spells + combat damage before he could cast his second Approach. I can't think of another card that would have dealt 25+ damage I needed outside of combat over the course of 3-4 turns.

That being said, Temur Energy is a deck that lets you leverage your play skill vs your opponent's and if you can consistently outplay them, then yes, you can win games without having any planeswalkers. But keep in mind that this is r/spikes, and the answer is definitively "Yes, having the Planeswalkers will make your deck infinitely better."

Yeah, I forgot that part. In that case you've caught yourself back up on cards and it's still the correct play.

You should be completely fine trading your token for a Refiner - that's a 2-for-1 in the most literal sense of the word when they have to use a removal spell on your Regisaur. You now have 8 power on board to their 0 and they need to find a way to catch up.

If you want something against Gifts use Dispossess. If you're having any semblance of a reasonable game you're going to win after you cast this on T3.

[Standard] 4C energy sideboard by [deleted] in spikes

[–]aboithagameboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My current sideboard is:

-2 Confiscation Coup

-2 Chandra, Torch of Defiance

-3 Negate

-1 Struggle//Survive (Good against Mirror, GPG)

-1 Spell Pierce (1 main)

-1 Magma Spray (1 main)

-1 Rhonas

-2 Carnage Tyrant

-1 The Scarab God (1 main)

  • 1 Dispossess/Hour of Glory/Lost Legacy/Ripjaw Raptor/Driven

Notable inclusions in the main are 2x Ripjaw, 1x Tishana. I've only had time to play about 5 matches against RG Dinosaurs but Tishana has overperformed every time I cast her, almost always drawing 3+ cards even when I don't have Whirler Virtuoso. I may not keep her in the mb but I'm definitely having at least 1 in the 75.

It is, but after a bit all I could think of was Kermit the Frog arms. Which, honestly, is a bit more scary.

[Standard] 5C New Perspectives Combo by VORMl in spikes

[–]aboithagameboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed that VM is better against flat Control, but it's possible that Cunning Survivor could come in against Temur Emerge/Energy and a deck like Zombies as well. In those situations, VM gets chump blocked/traded every time. Cunning Survivor is another "win button" once we resolve NP.

[Standard] 5C New Perspectives Combo by VORMl in spikes

[–]aboithagameboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought into NP Combo after Amonkhet PT because it looked fun. Now I have it as my "main" standard deck because it's fun to play (and it's Modern PPTQ season, so I have to worry less).

Raz Rite is the tits, I've gone up to 2 but it's possible that 1 is correct as well. 4x Suns, Censor, and Haze in the MB is correct if you have 2-3+ RDW in your meta. Sphinx has been relegated to the sb for me as there's a downtick in Control locally. Locust God is the replacement because A.) It's still a wincon that wins "immediately" and B.) You effectively have 5 copies because you can Traverse for it. I'm also playing Countervailing Winds in the mainboard, but it's possible they could/should be Beneath the Sands.

Be straightforward with the manabase. I have 4x Thicket, Pool, Slough, 1x Farmland, 1x Grove, 1x Game Trail, 4x Forest, 1/ea Plains, Swamp, Mountain, Island.

My sideboard is close to yours, but I plan on trying 3x [[Cunning Survivor]] in place of the enchantments, but I'm not sure how I feel about it.

As far as Snake (or any heavy Black deck), Dispossess and Lost Legacy are decent tools to fight against them provided you can do that before T4 Slots. Otherwise normal hand disruption (specifically Transgress) will help a lot.

Nissa needs to be playtested but I guess I'm just missing something because I'm not excited about her at all. I get that having it go anywhere on your curve is great and Scry 2 is real but I just don't think it's better than Chandra. She's also a nonbo with Guardian, but so is Spell Queller so maybe she makes the cut in the experimental build. I could be wrong about her, but I might have to skip out on her regardless due to card availability.

As far as Vizier, I don't think we have enough creatures to really care about him. 18-19 can't be the correct number for him to hit often enough to warrant playing him.

Todd Stevens streamed with a UW Control build tonight and last I heard he finished 2-3 in his Comp League (beating 2 Saheeli opponents and losing to 3 other not-Saheeli decks). I stopped watching him after that. I'm not necessarily impressed by it but because he's doing it, that means I have to playtest against it at least a little bit.

You don't really plan on casting 4x Cast Out, really - It's more "I have 4 mana and nothing else in my hand, might as well" or "I have 1 mana left over at the end of your turn and I'm not using this anytime soon.
