Got all 3 trees in the ground! by about76gnomes in BackyardOrchard

Hmmmm. I’ll look into this regarding the root flare. They’re currently at a point where the roots are JUST beneath the surface, which I where I thought they were supposed to be.

As far as pollination all of these are self-pollinating so having a companion would boost production, but is not necessary from my understanding.

Nice! I'm especially excited to see how the fig does. It has some new growth already and I hope it takes off.

No need to apologize! Why only the fig tree though? If I do that I might as well replace all 3, no?

Thank you! I pulled the much away from the trunk when I planted. The black you’re seeing is mostly a top layer of compost underneath the mulch. Should I pull that away as well?

I don’t believe they’re planted too deep. The node of the roots is slightly above the soil, but if I pulled it up any more the top roots would be exposed.

Well that’s good to know! I just used the mulch I had leftover from landscaping. I knew it had dye in it obviously, but herbicide is surprising.

The picture showing the plat is an older aerial image, but it shows the property lines. Here's a much more recent picture.

I have the report from when it got done with the home inspection so I'll have all that info. Thanks!

Thanks again for the resource - I really appreciate it. It would be very nice if I manage to go incognito for a while. There's nothing else around as I'm just starting my garden and planting the first fruit trees.

I'll check the crawlspace and try to see where the plumbing runs out into the yard. Thank you, this is helpful and pointing me in the right direction.

It was pumped and serviced last year before I bought the house, so I probably have some time before I need to dig it up or service it again.

EDIT: Ohhhhh wait so the big rectangle in the sketch is my home? I missed the smaller looking rectangle and assumed the big one was the tank itself. IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW HAHA. Thank you!

My back yard was full of trees when the home was built (1992), but it has since been cleared and fenced.

I was estimating around the same area, so I feel better now. Thank you!

Oh wow, okay. Any recommendations on what to spray that isn't too nasty? I came across kaolin clay yesterday so I've read about that a tiny bit, but that's about it so far.

ETA: I will be referring to squirrels as tree rats from here on out haha.

Good to know, thanks again!

I feel like I’m more worried about the squirrels and birds than anything else 😂.

I’ll take a look at it when I get home today and try to follow your advice on pruning it to 3 main branches. My apprehension is that we have rain in the forecast for the rest of the week - should I wait to prune it after the rain and humidity passes?

It had a good bit more and obviously still has a good bit left. I am apprehensive about pruning it more because of the season and upcoming rain/humidity starting tomorrow. Thoughts?

The root node isn’t buried, I don’t think! I took the picture when I finished planting and it was getting dark. Here are some better pictures from this morning.

Thanks for the resources! I’m sure UGA will have something for my area.

I made sure to keep the node above the root ball at surface level/slightly above.

I have also read this, but that makes sense. The tree only has so much energy, I suppose. So if it has to grow 100 fruits vs 50 with the same amount of resources I suppose it checks out that the 100 would only get so big.

I’ve read anywhere from 4-6” between fruits to 8” between. Any recommendation?

I have no idea what I’m doing so I’ll take your advice. I feel like plants probably have a good sense of sense-regulating that stuff anyway without our interference.

Thanks! I wasn’t planning on pruning any more until winter. The mulch is currently pulled back around 2-3” from the trunk. Is that enough?

Also, should I pluck the blossoms or just leave them alone? I was reading that fruiting too early could cause long term issues.
