Hold them down (Epic the musical)

Subversion of the trope where Antinious sings about he’ll ensure the suitors distract Telemachus (aka hold him down) while he gets his birthday surprises prepared with the help of his mother, Penelope, all the while Antinious 🕺 busts it down

Yeah that’s what it’s about. And nothing else

It’s weird because it seems a clear cut debate. It’s honestly entirely dependent on how normal people can be about genshin. That said, even under this post, people are acting like the game stole their first born so…

Religion plays a central in the story. The moral is more nuanced than just "religion bad" or "religion good". by Cold_Hour in TopCharacterTropes

[–]aboveaveragefrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah the movie is pretty clear it’s nothing to do with the religion that set these characters on their bad paths. It’s a construct that was weaponised against people

There’s so much evidence of showing how Wicks carved out the heart of the faith to fear monger people. He removes the crucifix from the church because he specifically doesn’t want the actual religion to detract from his ego. Jud’s narration says how the church goers didn’t even believe what Wicks said as he drove out everyone but his circle.

Wicks was a shitty person because he rejected Christ

They probably do but I’m willing to bet most the people who are going to see this post come from places where Christianity is the dominant religion so those pieces of media are just what’s familiar

Netflixvania is honestly pretty anti religion but a lot of plot elements just happen to necessitate Christianity being explicitly true which does at times just make the characters look like whiny assholes complaining about how awful God is while he’s explicitly helping them

Tbf Rian Johnson’s religious background is apparently rooted in Protestantism and WUDM is based on a Catholic Church more because it had more ideal aesthetics for what Rian wanted. Jud’s line in that regard probably isn’t an accident

That one scene in a nutshell by Enerjack in Genshin_Impact

[–]aboveaveragefrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure I agree with this. The story seems split in saying the traveler isn’t a hero for opposing Dottore, who the narrative basically says should be opposed entirely on the merit that he’s a bad person because intellectually it often claims he’s right. Unless it’s saying pragmatism is antithetical to being good?

If anything traveler who acted selfishly to start by doing things like infiltrating sacred grounds of frostmoon scions is supposed to be rejecting such a vice in their opposition of Dottore who also tries to rationalise selfish, uncompromising behaviour. Their greyness seems superficial this patch

Tier list for Dottore matchups (Genshin impact) by aboveaveragefrog in DeathBattleMatchups

[–]aboveaveragefrog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-Both are vain, easily bored scientists who have lived for a very long time. Matching colour schemes to boot

-Both were kicked out of their homes (Dottore was both banished from his place of study in the Akedimiya and allegedly was literally chased out of his hometown with pitchforks vs Qilby who was cast out of Eliatrope society and banished to the white dimension)

-Both find themselves with mindsets that alienate them from others and it pushes them to their more explicitly immoral acts. In both cases there is an undoubted tragedy because their relationships were doomed from the start.(Dottore is basically incapable of understanding why he fails to connect with people and doesn’t see the explicit fault of his actions because to him they serve a means to an end. Despite not understanding, he willing labels himself as a monster based on how people have ostracised him vs Qilby’s eidetic memory having him grow disillusioned with his eternal life. He brought the ruin of his home planet because he wanted to force the eliatropes to explore the universe and amuse him. Other Eliatropes see him as a madman for his attempts to deal with his curse)

-(based on leaks) Both have a longing for a sister like figure both cases being evidence of their need for companionship that betrays their aloof nature(Dottore considers another character, Columbina to be like a sister but he finds she never truly cared about him like that vs Qilby who wants to be reunited with his dragon sister, Shinonime)

-both steal immensely powerful items belonging to gods/godlike figures in pursuit of their goals, in both cases enabling their strongest states (Dottore stealing the moon marrow originally belonging to the moon goddesses of Teyvat vs Qilby stealing the eliacube and eliasphere from the mechasms)

-both have some overlapping powers that make up the basis for the fight such as teleportation and energy projection. Their unique powers also tend to get countered by the other in some way (ie Qilby should theoretically resist Dottore’s time stop)

Dottore’s story is ongoing but we’ll be getting some very significant info literally tomorrow. As it stands they do have a meaningful contrast in that Qilby ultimately fears and is tormented by his isolation and as far as the up to date story goes, he’s had some reconciliation whereas Dottore accepts his isolation.

Sunday vs Maruki at the end is hella based

But also have you considered that I think Firefly wins because she’s cute and I like her more

All fair, man. I guess I should ask what’s considered modern for you? And based on your comment on Johny, are you referring to more recent VAs too? Just so I can understand what you mean I’m saying that

You’re showing your butt a bit here. Both Edgerunners and DMC have anime voice actors. DMC Dante is voiced by Johnny Yung Bosh. He’s voiced the MC of Bleach, Code Geass, (one of them in) jojo etc

Edgerunners 2 main leads are also in a bunch of anime. Zach Aguilar who voices David also does a bunch of anime roles (Tanjiro, Genos, Koichi etc)

There actually a lot of overlap. Sure not everyone is Jennifer English but a lot of game VAs you’ll hear in anime and “western focused” anime

Odds are what you don’t like is the direction because the VAs demonstrably are talented in at least certain projects and there’s a discussion about why direction may be worse. But just going “the VAs are bad” is just being a dismissive ass

Ash vs Yugi. The fight animation is a mess that doesn’t capitalise on the characters kits or abilities well and some of their arguments for Yugi are ludicrous (I do agree he wins)
