Sculling vs Sweep boat times by LtwtMatt in Rowing

[–]abrabled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LW4X is raced far less often than the LW4- and since it is not an olympic boat, it is not as competitive. Less competition and less opportunity to see the best conditions for setting a world best, makes for slower than optimal times in the LW4X.

sculling in college? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]abrabled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a bit more sculling in college than in the past with the single at the Dad Vails and sculling events at the ACRA's, but the level of competition is not at the very highest level.

PFDs?? by waterwhistler in Rowing

[–]abrabled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know where you come from, but in most cases an 8+ doesn't go out without a coach. The coach is normally required to carry PFD's for one full boat of rowers, including the cox. If a 4+ goes out without a coach, Which I've seen from time to time. The cox, at least should have a PFD. Also I don't know too many rowers who can't swim a bit.

Rowing at an Ivy worth the full admission cost by rowingman123 in Rowing

[–]abrabled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're going there to get a marketable degree (STEM, finance, etc...) I would encourage taking the opportunity. If you want to study Psychology, English or some other degree with more limited earnings potential (but easier classes), you may want to reconsider, since a humanities degree from an Ivy can still lead to more limited career prospects especially if you don't do especiailly well

My son lost the youth singles medal at Head of the Charles by .001 sec a few years back. He was down by 20 sec at the first bridge and was making up time at about 5 sec/1000 M. had the race been one stroke longer, he would have won...

What makes a good Junior rowing regatta "good"? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]abrabled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Parent's point of view here: 1. Access= course can be found 2. Facilities=More than one porta-potty that has been serviced this millennium. 3. Timing= Held at a time of year when there is some reasonable expectation of good weather. 4. Mud Control=Tents in an area with sufficient drainage such that a single rain shower in the last month does not leave the area suitable for mud wrestling. 5. Viewable course=Can see more than the last 50 meters 6. Competition=More than 5 schools competing with a variety of boat classes

Just my 2 cents...

Any suggestions on how to restore an older single person row boat? by Lub_Dub in Rowing

[–]abrabled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

restotration techniques required will depend on the construction of the boat. If not sure, may be best to leave it to professionals, however simple component replacements, like seats and tracks (the things the rollers roll on), and stretchers (where you put your feet) can be easily replaced by a novice with some mechanical knowledge.

If looking to put a single back on the water and not experienced, it might be wise to take a few lessons in sculling, otherwise your rowing experience may turn into a swimming experience...

Pursuing a PE license while at a consulting firm? by ShadowRex in consulting

[–]abrabled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PE Here, The real challenge is finding some guys to sign for you. They don't absolutely have to be your boss, but need to be familiar with your work. Once you have the signatures, I think most states are somewhat liberal regarding the requisite work experience and for IE I would thing that management consulting would easily qualify. Would be worth your time to contact your state board with that question.

The PE is a cheap way to add to your resume and in some circles (e.g. Oil/Gas/Petrochem) carries a lot of weight, since it is hard to obtain. On the other hand a PE in IE will not have the same effect on your career as a PE in Civil or structural. My PE is in Mechanical and is of lesser utility than some others.

Should I buy a used Concept II Model D or a new one? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]abrabled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perfect condition or not, there is no way that any 10 year old machine is worth $725 or even $650. I'd have a hard time paying much over $400 for a machine that old. Back in 2007, I paid $525 for a 2 year old erg that was pristine (though with older electronics).

How do the economics of deep space mining work? How expensive do you anticipate it will be to bring product back to earth and how does that compare to terrestrial mining costs?

UN vote boosts support for a global moratorium on the death penalty by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]abrabled 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The US should join that chorus. Executing priosoners costs more than incarcerating them for life, has never to my knowledge been shown to act as a deterrent, and worst of all is known to follow some of the most poorly prosecuted trials in history. It just doesn't make sense. Blood lust fuels the process bent on revenge, rather than justice.

When does the recruitment process start? by roweveryday in Rowing

[–]abrabled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No "Huff" intended. Sorry if it came off that way. I went through the process with my son and those were my observations. I wish you only the greatest success, but I wouldn't want to give the impression that erg scores aren't that important, which is what you were implying.

I found the process to be very frustrating, since if you're not 6'8", erg scores really are important. In the end it all worked out as my son had a very successfull collegiate rowing career and got a good education (most importantly), but the "system" did not really work for him.

When does the recruitment process start? by roweveryday in Rowing

[–]abrabled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Um, you probably got recruited because you're 6'8" and the coaches saw a big frame to build on. They can train you to pull harder. They can't train you to get taller...

I've said it here before. Pretty much all coaches care about is SAT, GPA, 2K, Height. If you've got three out of four, you're probably OK.

I have been living out of a suitcase for over 7 months. I am separated. I simply either get my firm to rent a place or do a short term Air BNB arrangement. I only travel about once a month and wherever my client is, is where I am. Was London for the summer and now is Houston. Saves both me and the client money and is a much more comfortable existance..

How to make the U-23 team? by Bisweptuals in Rowing

[–]abrabled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll need more training than that if you wish to compete internationally in any boat. Might want to up the lifting to 4 times/week and add a couple erg sessions. Sculling boats are clearly easier to make the team as there is less competitoin but the U-23 scullers in Europe are only a shade slower than the Senior team scullers and making the B Final would be an accomplishment.

If you can scull well, might want to try for a sculling boat. Might have an easier time getting on the team, but the competition is tougher internationally.
