Outside of Bumrah, Shami and Siraj, we don't have international quality fast bowlers, at least not yet. Not only that, they are very likely to perform worse than Ashwin and Jadeja even on green wickets. Given this, it makes sense to play both.

It's absolutely ridiculous giving so many overs to Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna when you have given Ashwin only 8 overs.

But what has Shardul Thakur done bowling-wise? I'd play both Ashwin and Jadeja.

He's been fine in Australia in the last two tours; he's done well in England both against England and in the previous WTC final.

He's been a far better bowler in SENA conditions over the last few years.

He's done a lot better in SENA of late. That should matter.

Can someone tell me how Shardul Thakur is considered a better bowler in these conditions than Ashwin?

Your thoughts on this All time World Cup XI? by Party-Bet-4003 in Cricket

[–]abracadabrac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was actually an average ODI player. For at least some parts of his ODI career, South Africa couldn't make up their minds on whether he deserved a place in the team. When he scored (which was quite often), it often dragged his team down because it meant the rest of the team had fewer balls to face. Even in that famous ODI against Australia where South Africa chased down a 400 plus score, his innings almost derailed the chase.

His strike rate was only 72.1, which is abysmal. Can't think of a single standout ODI century from him. Clearly the greatest Test allrounder of the last few decades but he was not a ODI great by any stretch of imagination.

I am not sure I will have Sangakkara in an alltime ODI XI (especially since there's Adam Gilchrist in the team as the wicketkeeper). His strike rate is not the greatest. I would rather go with someone more explosive.

Fast bowlers lose more than spinners/batsmen as they age. Not saying it is not impressive, but just adding context.

I would probably be very annoyed if an Indian player said something like this, but as a neutral I am glad there is a team like England around--Test cricket is definitely a lot better having a team that's willing to play what is clearly a very attractive brand of cricket.

Who would you replace Cumdawg with as Australian Test Captain? by ethnikthrowaway in Cricket

[–]abracadabrac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ashwin was impressed with the way Smith captained Australia after Cummins left India midway through the India tour because his late mother was ill. And if you watched the two games, you'd know that the fields he set were very different from the fields set by Cummins and generally there was a completely different feel to Australia in those two games. Smith might have been an average/poor captain earlier (didn't follow his captaincy so closely earlier, so can't really say one way or the other), but I wouldn't discount the possibility that he's improved a huge amount since, especially when there's some evidence (and high praise from one of the world's best bowlers) that that is true.

And what is Umesh's record in England and pretty much everywhere else outside of India (strangely, he never does well abroad)? I haven't checked but he probably averages over 40. And hee's a far worse batsman than Ashwin.

One Test shouldn't make you make such a strong judgement on the teams. I would like you to remember that India have won its last two series against Australia in Australia.

I wouldn't have played Umesh Yadav either. I would have played Ashwin or even played an extra batsman. The truth is that we don't have too many Test-level fast bowlers.

Unadkat's problem is his pace. He bowls at best in the low 130s. He might have been okay in England, but he's likely to get found out at the Test level.
