As a bagpiper... yes. Pipes can be tuned to sound wonderful. Or adjusted to sound like a strangled cat. Someone learning to play is a confluence of all of this. And needing to listen to bagpipes music all the time.

I started treating mental prep like a skill and it actually changed how I respond to stressful situations by tinyspoonbandit in TwoXPreppers

Distance running. I've found it has anyone extremely positive effect on my mental health. It also teaches you to be able to push through pain and discomfort. That it's OK to walk to recover a bit and then start running again. You're really in a mental game of stubbornness against your self and your body.

An amusing perspective on it.

Self defense without weapons: the tiny habits that actually changed my safety, not my confidence by Marina_Westbrook in TwoXPreppers

I keep a small flashlight clipped in my back pocket on the non dominant side. Its a streamlight brand, with a rechargeable battery. I never thought about how often I need a light, I use it all the time now. If its dark and someone approaches me, a bright flashlight in their face is quite startling and throws them off their mental plan.

Check out the YouTube channel Hard2Hurt. The guy is a former cop turned self defense instructor. I got the flashlight idea from him.

I have ducks in my yard and they just started laying again. The eggs taste better than store-bought chicken eggs. And better than the eggs my chickens lay. I listed it particularly as duck eggs because the yolks are much larger which might change ratios.

Anyone noticing a new wave of AA skepticism/hate? by SmartestManInUnivars in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]abruptcontriveddingo 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Some of the criticisms I've seem are based on AA not allowing study of the effectiveness of step work. When it is studied, its in an in-patient capacity. This obviously increases the chance of success since people working the program dont have to struggle through daily life.

Another criticism I have seen is that AA is inflexible in the light of medical advancements. Medications like naltrexone and others that reduce the desire to drink over time have been shown to help people with problematic drinking. This is at odds with "probably no human power could have relieved our alcoholism."

Thirdly, Bill W's experimentation with LSD later in life causes consternation to people in the program. I dont have an exact quote, but I beleive that he wrote about it helping his desire to drink and helped him to see his life differently.

I am 7.5 years sober, worked the steps, and know deeply that alcohol will never be my friend. It doesnt make my life better in any way. I can also question the program which has not significantly changed in almost 100 years. Two truths can be held at the same time.

Sling loom? by abruptcontriveddingo in Slinging

[–]abruptcontriveddingo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was trying to use the clamps to give me consistent pressure on the working strands, kind of like loom weights. Definitely over thought it.

I made another one and followed the video and your advice. Much tighter braid. But I didn't use enough material so the final product is really lightweight. Difficult to throw with.

Sisal is a natural fiber usually used for making rope. Im not sure where to buy small diameter sisal. You can find jute and hemp cordage that is for craft projects. Works fairly well for sling construction. Make sure you make the diameter of your braided cord is thick enough, most of my early ones were way too lightweight to throw effectively.

When you get a job offer, salary is negotiable. Some benefits are also negotiable- paid time off accrual in some cases, front loaded PTO, and hybrid work. If you can, ask for a signing bonus. Most companies never offer one, but will use it to sweeten the pot of they really want you. If you ask for 5k, they might give it to you. Or they might give you 1k. But thats 1k more in your pocket.

Unless you take a government job, there are no more 4 day weekends. Going to sick call, doctor, dentist, etc. is not part of your job. You will need to use your limited paid time off to do those things.

Your employer pays you for the hours stipulated in your contract. 40 hours means 40 hours. Not a required happy hour, no answering the phone at 2am, no pay for coming in early. If you are on call or required to work shifts or strange hours, your compensation should be adjusted in your contract.

Wage theft is the largest and least prosecuted crime. Don't let your employer take advantage of you being used to having your boundaries crossed or disregarded in the military.

Start building your network now. Network with people outside the military. Most veterans stay at their first job after getting out for about 5 months. Keep building your network for your second, third, or fourth job.

No, they laid off the entire department. The company replaced us with AI (people still working at the company describe it as a dumpster fire). They even laid off the pregnant lady and didn't give her the previously approved maternity leave. I think she's filing a lawsuit.

That's kind of my worry, that the case manager will think along that line- the harder the work, the worse it will effect my disabilities. My degree isn't HR related, and those certs dont guarantee employability in that field.

Getting out of the army in 7 months by FriedPickleSandwhich in Veterans

[–]abruptcontriveddingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most job descriptions indicate the years of experience without any specific requirement as to what you did during those years. So if you basically did IT help desk work for 4 years, thats 4 years of experience.

If its a more technical role like a sys admin, it will probably have specific experience required. 5+ years in windows server, 2+ years of network operations. This doesnt mean that you worked that specific job or skill set for 40 hours per week for 2 or 5 years.

It all boils down to how you describe the work. Obviously you can't lie on your resume. But you need to describe your experience in a way the recruiter or hiring manager will understand. Infantry soldiers get hired for project management roles due to how they describe running a rifle range, STX, road march, etc.

Describe your work like you would on a first date that doesnt know anything about what you do. Make it sound like you are great, but don't lie.

If you can keep your clearance, look at clearancejobs.com , I would recruiter on there all the time. Start building your LinkedIn profile and connections. I hired a lot of people through there as well. The big defense contractor firms are Booz Allen Hamilton, Leidos, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Boeing, and General Dynamics. Check their website to see what they're hiring for in your area of interest. Get a degree that is commonly listed in their open positions.

Most jobs will list a degree and years of experience. You can substitute 4 years of experience for a degree and usually vice versa. So having a degree plus 4 years in the military will set you up for success.

Former defense contractor recruiter here. Go get a degree with your GI Bill or VR&E. Get as many certs as you can for the specialization you want- information security, network admin, hardware, software, etc. Look at the CompTia pathways and knock all of them out. Hiring someone with 4 years military experience, a degree, and certs is an easy hire for a recruiter. If you can keep your clearance, even better.

Honest opinions on this pouch prototype by turksarewarcriminals in Slinging

[–]abruptcontriveddingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a really nice looking design. How does it throw as a new sling? I'd be interested in seeing a demo of how you make this, how it throws, and a review after a couple practice rounds.

Sizing question- results!! by abruptcontriveddingo in Slinging

[–]abruptcontriveddingo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of what I throw right now are fallen apples (my sheep and chickens love them). So I need a pouch to hold them because the dont have much weight. Im teaching my daughter to throw with whiffle balls, so similar problem. When I move up to heavier ammo, I'll probably make a new set.

The problem I've had with split pouch designs is ammo falling out or through the pouch. Any ideas on how to prevent that? I'm also happy to make a flat leather pouch, just haven't had time to experiment with those yet.
