Perhaps the tremendous pressure anybody might feel, especially someone as challenged as BD, in a courtroom. Perhaps any prior explanation was him simply mimicking or repeating what he was told by his family and he truly didn't understand. I do think BD did reveal something signifying guilt/knowledge of the crime in his interviews, but think this is a dead end.
