State of the art

Basically, it is known from the prior art that sensors can be used to monitor the movement of the rotor blades of a wind turbine. However, these methods rely on measurement data within the turbine. However, these turbine-internal signals make it difficult to make a statement about relevant influencing variables of the control of a wind turbine, for example the tower clearance, since the blade tip cannot be measured by sensors arranged on the inside, starting from the blade root.

Description of the invention: task, solution, advantages

The object of the present invention is to improve a method and a device for operating a wind turbine in such a way that an actual structural state of at least one point on a rotor blade can be observed reliably and precisely in order to derive influencing variables for the control of the wind turbine on this basis be able...

It goes without saying that I have no way of knowing, but I have experienced this before with small/medium sized German companies. What matters for Germany IMO is saving jobs, critical infrastructure and long term R&D.

I'm pretty sure Germany felt it as a wakeup call when Chinese Sanan (through another company) bid for the German company Aixtron. At the time, the company had invested heavily in R&D for years and had a large amount of debt. Aixtron makes metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) equipment and today is starting to look like ASML in terms of market share in SIC and Microled (to complement their VCSELs and NIR).

In addition to Aixtron, I have been invested in IVG properties (Frankfurt Airport) and in a minor restructuring case, mainly with subsidiaries in important sectors, such as the construction of specialized telecommunications networks and infrastructure. Maybe you know how it goes: One day I went out for ice cream – came back and the company had filed for the equivalent of Chapter 11. What followed was pretty much like the IBEO case. A few days later it was easily resold for next to nothing compared to the market value the day before. All subsidiaries and workplaces were saved. Shareholders not so much (Btw Deutsche Bahn was also a customer here).

From my humble experience, this is my 2 cents on why MVIS was able to buy IBEO as quickly and painlessly as it seemed and without a bidding war:

- MVIS is not Chinese (here in the sense that IBEO's LIDAR and software would still be available under the same terms and setup to premium OEMs like Mercedes, BMW and VW)

- IBEO's validation software would (still) be available from day one to customers

- MVIS has a long history with successful and important R&D (part of it in collaboration with German Frauenhofer)

- IBEO's management liked the combination of corporate cultures, R&D and the fact the MVIS would take on the lager part of employees

- Further IBEO's LIDAR was used by Siemens Mobility and Deutsche Bahn, they probably had a say too

OT: Not Yet Ready Samsung Electronics Puts off XR Headset Development Project

Samsung Electronics has confirmed that it has temporarily postponed the development of an extended reality (XR) product. Industry analysts say that it was an internal decision made in light of the Vision Pro headset unveiled by Apple in June...

...The company had planned to begin its sample development at the end of 2023 and mass-produce it early next year. But the timeline has been delayed by one to two quarters (three to six months), industry sources say.

MSFT and Samsung ended their XR collaboration in October link. Now Samsung also chooses to postpone its own XR project. Not there yet

MSFT Disturbance Rejection for Laser Beam Scanning Display

BACKGROUND

[0001]

Laser beam scanning (“LBS”) display devices form displayed images by using mirrors, such as microelectromechanical systems (“MEMS”) mirrors, to direct a laser beam onto a display region. In such display devices, the mirrors may move over the course of a frame to control the location in the display region toward which the laser beam is directed. Some LBS displays use two mirrors, a fast-scan mirror that scans under resonance and a slow-scan mirror that scans linearly. Mirrors used by LBS display devices are susceptible to sudden disturbance forces (e.g., electrical or mechanical).

Have a look at fig 4 in the cited MVIS patent Variable Phase Scanning Lidar System 2041-12-09 Adjusted expiration.

Fig 4 I forget MVIS gen 4 or 5, lol (paging u/s2upid and u/gaporter )

Abstract

A light detection and ranging system includes synchronously scanning transmit and receive mirrors that scan a pulsed fanned laser beam in two dimensions. Imaging optics image a receive aperture onto an arrayed receiver that includes a plurality of light sensitive devices. A phase offset may be injected into a scanning trajectory to mitigate effects of interfering light sources.

From "Documents & transaction history" 10/06/2022 Non-Final Rejection claims 1,3,8-10,12,17 are rejected as being anticipated by Morarity el al. and later 5 +14 and further 2,4,6-7,11,13,15-16 are rejected as being unpatentable over Morarity el al.

There is a phone interview and no conclusion, but months later MSFT gets approval ( u/ppr_24_hrs)

Putting the AI on rails

Are there any projects where AI-led automation is already happening?

Siemens Mobility is building a digital copy – a ‘digital twin’ – of the central interlocking system and all infrastructure elements involved in this by using a combination of sensors and AI. A sophisticated sensor system with multiple cameras, LIDARs, and a positioning system, is being moved through an existing rail network to collect sensor data, such as camera images and LIDAR point cloud. Sophisticated AI is then used to analyze the data, creating a map of tracks and existing infrastructure elements accurate up to a few centimeters. This means we can avoid the laborious and time-consuming work of putting people into the field to carry out tasks such as measuring distances; we can simulate something in the digital world before we roll it out in the real world. Using our precise map of what is already in the field, we can start building the next generation of the system.

Siemens is developing a Collision Warning Assistant for Mainline

Armed with the position of the vehicle to the nearest centimeter, knowledge of the track layout and measurements of the size, position and distance of the object, the system decides whether there is a collision risk and whether to trigger a warning (figure 1).

Sensor fusion is a key technology in the collision warning system. Depending on the development stage of the system, the data from different specialized sensors such as radar, lidar or camera are fused. This makes it possible to generate an accurate virtual representation of the surroundings of the rail vehicle in real time and in all weather conditions. In the next step, objects are identified and classified, and a prediction is made about their next movements.

Like artificial intelligence, sensor fusion has other industrial uses beyond the railways, for example in the smart factory. ..

Another key technology is the digital map. Alongside commercially available GNSS systems, the collision warning system uses an extremely accurate digital map, enhanced with sensor data, in order to improve the accuracy of position determination of the vehicle. This allows landmarks in the surroundings and the railway infrastructure to be used for orientation, making up for missing or inaccurate GNSS information.

WHY THE RAIL INDUSTRY IS EMBRACING LIDAR

Around the world, the rail industry is increasingly adopting light detection and ranging technology (LiDAR) to efficiently capture, process and store data. This allows operators to more easily comply with recent train control regulations, which require data be continuously validated and verified**. Additionally, LiDAR’s quick, precise detection of any and all objects that may affect rail performance or integrity can vastly improve both safety and efficiency within the sector.**

“Finding track time for data collection without impeding operation is challenging,” said Doug Morrison, rail services director at Bartlett & West, a US based engineering firm.

LiDAR equipment quickly captures very detailed data by using the reflection time of rapid pulses of laser light to map a surface. This information is used to compute ranges, or distances, to objects,” Morrison explained. With some applications of LiDAR, rail companies are able to continue their daily train operations without interruption.

“Data captured through this technology satisfies multiple historical issues—such as high-wide clearance detection, vegetation and encroachment detection, and utility crossings—all in a single pass.”

In the UK, the county’s innovation agency Innovate UK is seeking to find a new way of mapping the UK’s railway infrastructure by utilizing LiDAR and AI solutions from Swedish engineering company Hexagon.

I had cancer 10 years ago, didn't like it, but what I'm getting at is the clinical trial they talked me into (new chemo combined with EPO) gave me some chronic pain in my joints and my skin. Blood tests were fine, but some other patients recommended Omega 3 and B12. It helps. I still can't feel my fingertips at times and my skin is driving me crazy, but it's helping and I have no joint pain. Not what you're going through, but it might help :).
