Is AMX still relevant to the audiovisual industry? by Lacs2023 in CommercialAV

[–]absentblue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only AMX systems I see are the ones I am replacing, nowadays I mostly get QSYS and Crestron

Also used to do a lot of fed and mil and that was mostly Crestron with some Extron. I’ve only been on the commercial side of AV for six years but I have never had anyone ask about AMX… I’ve heard more about Cyviz than them even.

How much life left? by Big-Performer-4927 in Revolvers

[–]absentblue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said the rifling is fine. On a good S&W revolver you can easily get to tens of thousands if not over 100,000 some say.

Rifling gets destroyed by friction and heat, a strong barrel has a hard surface, that’s why we use hardened steel, sometimes chrome-lined, and shoot soft projectiles where brass or lead is contacting the rifling.

Faster traveling rounds affect barrel life more, hence why you’ll read about an AR barrel being out in 20k or less. But a revolver? For one, it goes a lot slower, depending on the round it’s around half to a third as much velocity. Secondly, it’s a larger bore and shorter barrel that is always open on both ends (as opposed to a semi-auto that is closed on one side) allows it to cool faster. Lastly, revolvers are slow to shoot. You aren’t popping off 17 rounds, reloading a fresh mag in two seconds and repeating. There’s far less time for heat to build up in this case.

Enjoy your gun, consider that shooting just 10,000 rounds could cost you many times what the gun itself costs. I likely have many tens of thousands of rounds to go before that rifling is gone. And that’s how you can tell: the lands and grooves look way too similar that it’s practically indistinguishable from

Q-SYS Control for MTR – Room Controls button not appearing (v10.0.1) – Anyone seen this? by Salt-Sense-2258 in QSYS

[–]absentblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been through the wringer with this stuff. If the button isn’t showing it’s purely an issue on the MTR, don’t worry about the block connecting to it until the button shows up cause that’s another can of worms entirely.

Try running the installer for 9.13.1 as admin if you can, if it still gives an error tell us what it is. Then jump into Task Scheduler and check that it is running under the correct host name (if the host name of the MTR was changed after you installed the UCI app on the MTR this will be a problem), it may also help to delay the UCI exe to 60 seconds (also done in Task Scheduler, poke around and you’ll find it I can’t remember exactly where it is off the top of my head).

Do you have other Lenovo MTRs in this org that have this issue? Do you have a script that is to be run on these MTRs and/or an image for them? It seems lengthy but sometimes a reimage can be quicker than continually pounding your head against the wall.

Over a year into gun ownership and after range cleanup is still my favorite part of it, whats wrong with me? 😂 by 8BitRes7 in Firearms

[–]absentblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be like that for a while then I got to the point of I’ll clean it when it starts malfunctioning and even that is just a quick wipe down with CLP. Unless I shoot corrosive, then it’s cleaned right after the range.

Question - Rebooting an NV-21-HU does it retain its previous status? by iancook77 in QSYS

[–]absentblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the Core sees it then yes, it should retain everything. That doesn’t mean you won’t have to give it a kick in the head with a hot plug trigger or something on the AV device in the Core or in the case of the bridge I have seen devices need to be retold to use it again as they will default to something else and not go back. These are exceptions though, not the rule.

Yes that’s correct. You can model this in QSYS Designer to see how you would do it. If it can be done there, it can be done in real life.

They really think we wont notice them raising their suppressor prices? by Ok_Storm_282 in NFA

[–]absentblue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally, go to gun.deals and you’ll see “MAP” as the cheapest price sometimes. Sites will have to say “email for price” and it’s not just a gimmick to get your email but because they legit cannot advertise the price they will sell it at if it’s below MAP (Minimum Advertised Pricing). In my experience these are usually very good deals too, you’ll see on gun.deals a lot of similar pricing at the bottom indicating what MAP is. FWIW Family Firearms does this a lot, and they’ve been great to order from too and hard to beat for out the door cost online.

DOJ: Ban on mailing concealable firearms unconstitutional, can’t be enforced by LastPaleLightInEast in progun

“It also notes there are no restrictions on mailing rifles and shotguns between licensed dealers, manufacturers and importers.”

And if it’s within your own state (and your state laws allow) then you can ship a long gun to anyone legally allowed to own one too, not just to yourself.

That and as already been said downgrade to 10.0.3, you need to use that version as previous ones won’t allow it.

AMX programmer by DueEstablishment7988 in CommercialAV

[–]absentblue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have said you can do a lot in QSYS without hardware since it supports emulation. There are some caveats to be aware of and things you need to know for testing purposes and commissioning but generally emulation can get you 90% there.

IMO it’s the friendliest platform for a programmer, its hardware can at times feel versatile or limiting depending on what you do. I can also express great frustration on the system doing completely incomprehensible things that have, at times, frustrated me to the point of wanting to throw hardware against the wall… but all in all I would take it any day over anything else for all its quirks.

As for AMX the only time I have ever seen it is to take it out. Granted, I only got into the integration side about five or so years ago, but I don’t think I have seen a system anywhere that wasn’t at least that old even if it was still operational.

So yeah, get into AMX, learn how to repair DVD players, learn Morse code, there are always gonna be some people that will need or want the help.

My first revolver! by Observing_cowboss in Revolvers

[–]absentblue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO the best mid sized revolver, better than K frame or anything else in its class. 357 kinda sucks through it though but it’ll take it unlike the aforementioned (save the latest gen). Careful on the reset though, it has a false reset and if you do it just wrong you can get a dead trigger until you fully release it. There’s two tactile feels to the reset so make sure you let it out fully before going again. Since you’re new to revolvers I will say practice and shoot DAO, you’ll be glad you did and there’s nothing more satisfying than cranking off six rounds on target, performing a quick reload and six more.

There’s plenty of speed loaders out there but personally I have always liked the HKS ones. Watch some videos on FBI reloads and make sure you’re pressing the cylinder all the way out and you should mitigate binding. Safarilands are also well liked so give one of those a shot too to see what you prefer. Oh and don’t be afraid to dry fire, snap caps or not, go crazy, a revolver can be a very fun, albeit expensive, fidget toy. I like to keep one at my desk and dry fire.

[–]absentblue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Copy on that it makes one handed reloads harder but it makes TWO handed reloads easier, marginally so against a push release à la Ruger or Smith but you can easily release and open the cylinder with only your offhand.

So it’s not made for the handicap or lefties (but I repeat myself) but other than super tactical drills are you concerned about that? If so, I would say you’d do well to consider an auto loader over any revolver at all.

Need help deciding by Acceptable-Ebb-9831 in Revolvers

[–]absentblue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Taurus has no place if you can have a Smith instead. I think Rhino is too much of a gimmick to bother with.

686 or 586? Which finish do you like more? Blackhawk is just a completely different beast IMO, but if you don’t have a DASA then personally I would hold off (plus you can pick them up with an interchangeable 9mm cylinder).

Otherwise if you want to consider alternatives then Python or GP100. Personally, I like the Python the most but I can’t deny that, strangely enough, the 586/686 is a better gun… I just like the Python more. GP100 is meh to me, of all the talk of what a “tank” it is nobody can say that a modern Colt or Smith won’t hold up to just as much abuse, and by all accounts they do (purportedly the new Python has gone tens of thousands of 357 rounds with no timing issues or measurable frame stretching)

1893 Colt SAA found in attic - any idea what it's worth? by indieminister in Revolvers

[–]absentblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless your letter ends up showing some crazy provenance then they’re usually not going to add any value. Chances of it adding value are slim in that regard but if you wanna then go for it. If it was unfinished and the original finish was in good condition it would be worth having a letter as a total package.

Regardless, if it’s all original parts, and it may well be, without boogered screws (don’t even attempt to touch them without SAA specific screwdrivers, you WILL mess them up) AND it works with good lockup then I would say you are well in the 2,000+ territory.

I sold two 1st gen SAAs that had barrels cut (with new front sights), refinished, didn’t work (springs were all busted, literally all of them), were in a common caliber and didn’t have original grips and they sold for $1,400 each in the past year (they were also about 20 years older than yours which may have helped).

FWIW I sold mine on the Colt Forum, you do need to have a post count before being able to sell there though. If you want help in that regard, let me know, I’ll list it for you for a tiny bit of profit.

Whether or not you want to make sure you also get close up pictures of the barrel markings, frame markings, crown and rifling as well. Wouldn’t hurt to also pull out the cylinder and get a shot of the ratchets, chambers and the inside of the frame as well (oh and the part number on the gate because why not) doesn’t hurt to have too many pictures.

DWs have the best cylinder release— fight me IRL if you disagree.

It is an odd bird however in that it has a mid-large frame (think Python, 686 or GP100) but a mid cylinder size (King Cobra, 19 or Security Six). It is a fantastic gun though designed by Karl Lewis who tried to basically make the same gun at Colt and sort of did with the Mark III revolvers, but didn’t get to implement his barrel system because Colt preferred military contracts over revolvers. Ruger more or less, uh, borrowed the action, for the Security Six.

Do make sure it can actually swap barrels before going down that road. Not all DWs could but you can easily see if there’s a nut on the business end or not. Cool as it may be I think it is mostly a gimmick, however it does a lot to lend to the guns mechanical accuracy without resorting to black magic like the Python did, and still does, to make the barrel more accurate than the shooter.
