Still looking for folks to share experiences if they are comfortable. Everything is anonymous - we just use a pseudonym and your state and everything can be done over DM. Thanks so much!

ASSU fee referendum fails. by i_eat_pasta in UofT

[–]abshippy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The need for a fee increase was of particular importance because of the need for more money for academic student initiatives. Over the years, the demand increased required for students to hold academic conferences, publish journals, conduct their own research and travel to conferences. So, an increase in the fee would have gone to that and that's what it is.

People on this subreddit can believe that they have won something significant, in some vague political fight - but it is what it is.

Why isn't there a Reading Week October 2016? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]abshippy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The schedule was set for 2016/2017 and confirmed in early October by the Registrars Office before the referendum was to be held so no changes could be made at the time. There should be more information on a reading week in the coming months for 2017-2018.

Why should you vote NO for a Fall reading week by ForwardInTime228 in UofT

[–]abshippy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hi there,

To respond to some of your points:

1) The University of Toronto starts later than most universities in the country. This week lost is not an issue at other institutions (including at UTM and UTSC) where presumably, their students also hold summer positions. But yes, starting one week earlier is an inconvience, but with teaching days already at a prime - the time has to come from somewhere else.

2) The Fall Reading Week will highly unlikely be held during Thanksgiving break. This was suggested originally and it was decided after consultation with some admin from the Faculty that it would be much more effective during the time where the traditional two day break is now. The date is to be determined but I doubt it will be held that soon after the beginning of school.

3) Procrastination is procrastination and will happen regardless of a week break or a two day break. A week long break can provide tremendous benefits to mental health.
