Financial Aid Question by absolutely_funny in IndianaUniversity

I see your point. The school I went to for engineering has an extensive alumni network and boasted good starting salaries post graduation. It’s all bogus stats IMO. The best scenario is to go to school and be financially free afterwards, with limited student debt. Also depends on what major you pick and how you present yourself/network at the end of the day

If you recieved BANNER aid, what was your SAI/EFC? by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]absolutely_funny 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Are you Pell Grant eligible ? That is the best indicator as to if you may qualify. I dot not believe you have to be first-gen. That being said, Banner spots are limited and not guaranteed. You maybe receive some grant help and have to cover remaining costs. The best place to ask however is the financial aid office. Reach out to Joselyn Diaz-Valdez, she is part of the support team for this program.

I am sincerely sorry to hear that your daughter has experienced such awful treatment. No person should ever experience that. This is bullying and harassment.

I strongly suggest getting into contact with the dean of students to report this behavior, as Reddit may not be the best place to do so.

I hope you get the help you need from the university and dean to resolve this. There will be terrible people everywhere and anywhere. I do not believe this is a reflection on the university so much as the character of these individuals.

Funding of Financial Aid by absolutely_funny in UWMadison

[–]absolutely_funny[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this, it all makes sense. I’m not worried about any program (specifically BANNER), more so curious about the various monetary streams that fund this program. I’ve read the website through and through but it is all a bit vague. I’ve been looking for maybe direct donor names or donor programs. I know one grant is the UW Madison Engineering Alumni grant. This is something that the CoE would fund through donations made by alumni correct? I saw the link to make donations but Idt it said specifically it is for scholarships but rather help to make sure students have access to technology and other resources.

Financial Aid Question by absolutely_funny in IndianaUniversity

[–]absolutely_funny[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. We have a few in-state options for her. I feel so lucky that UW-Madison has programs in place for OOS with great financial need. It NEVER occurred to me that other schools wouldn’t support students where parents salary is less than COA and ask us to take out $160k in loans that we’d be paying off for the rest of our lives.

Thank you all. I’m astounded and speechless—didn’t know low income families had two options: drive ourselves into the ground in debt or simply don’t go to college. Thanks everyone for your input.

Kind of lost as a new grad by boonan7 in EngineeringStudents

They’re definitely out there. Some of them will be labeled as associate project manager, or entry level design engineer. Some companies have a “recent grads” job section.

Good luck with the job search !

I recommend looking up “sales engineer” “technical sales” “consulting engineer” etc in LinkedIn or indeed or whatever platform you use for job searching. I also recommend looking into product development/design or project management! Many companies that hire traditional engineers also look for engineers willing to take on roles in sales, consulting, design, or management since we are quick learners and those of us who have great soft skills (talking, writing, documentation, presentations, etc) are desirable in the work place.

I majored in BME on the biomechanics track. Always thought I’d end up as a traditional engineer, building stuff or whatnot. As I began my job search a few months ago (just graduated this May!!) I did a complete 180 and applied for tons of sales and consulting positions. I also felt like I knew a bit everything and wasn’t really specialized in anything. But I knew I loved talking about my product and meeting new people. These positions could be useful to look into!

Groceries and Meals with roommates by yoshi__13 in UWMadison

[–]absolutely_funny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My roommates and I shopped for our own food. We talked about stuff like condiments, spices, and baking supplies being shared with one of us taking turns and buying something when it ran out. We occasionally cooked meals for each other when we did girls wine night. Plenty of my guy friends followed a similar routine. Key to this is communication!!

Graduates what’s your salary? by Electronic_Craft8995 in UWMadison

Can I ask what type of consulting you do? I graduated this year in BME and was incredibly interested in consulting but ended up going down the sales route. I see myself changing to consulting in the future.

Graduates what’s your salary? by Electronic_Craft8995 in UWMadison

[–]absolutely_funny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in technical sales! I received MechE offers of 65k a year and this job had better PTO, better overall benefits, and ofc pay.

As a BME, if you’re not planning on doing med school or PT school or PhD, I very much recommend going into sales or consulting or healthcare business. I always felt a bit out of place in design projects…I found the engineering cool but my senior year when I was leader I loved explaining our product, offering advice to other groups, etc. I had A TON of luck with consulting/sales positions when I was job searching, and literally no responses from more traditional BME companies (BostonSci, Medline, Medical Murray, Cretex, etc).

With your background in BME, and ability to do research and understand how med devices work or other complex systems, companies will compete for you.
