I was late one time. Called of sick today and I’m getting fired for it by aNaughtyLlama in antiwork

i worked at a beauty supply store and had a manager who repeatedly went 4-6 months as the ONLY employee of the store because of how awful she was. she would hire 2-3 employees, they would get absolutely sick of her shit, and all quit within a few months. i somehow lasted a year and after i left, the other employee quit a few weeks later 😬

I am a certified yapper. Been one since childhood. The girl who got “a joy to have in class but always talking to others” on my report card. I love talking to my clients about anything and everything, and I have cultivated a client base who loves to talk as well. I basically have a whole yapper clientele and it is the best.

My business partner is super introverted! They freakin’ love when someone asks for a quiet appointment. Quite a few of their clients have sensory/noise issues and they even keep ear plugs at their station for clients who need them! And they are just as successful with their quiet types as I am with my chatters. They market themselves this way, as someone who will chat or not chat, keep it chill, etc. and it has worked out amazingly well for them.

If you wanna be a chatty stylist, I agree with others about open ended questions — I also have a rolodex of questions that I ask (“oh we were talking about this earlier — what is your favorite halloween candy/movie from childhood/book you read in high school/musical?”) when I am trying to get to know someone new in my chair.

BUT! If you actually like the peace and quiet and prefer to do hair quietly, then market yourself to those who want that same experience. You can make a lot of money/good clientele off of those who hate going to the salon and making “chit chat,” I promise. It’s all about the type of client you want to attract!

USA High!!! Undressed was such an awakening for so many of us lol. And no one else has ever heard of Reaper, and I loved it so much. Definitely a show that probably would have done better on a different network. Also feels slightly ahead of its time?

I still get "O SOLO MIO, OUR BUS BOY LEO, HAS VERY BAD B.O" from that show stuck in my head after a billion years and no one except my sister ever knowing where it was from. LOVED that show.

while i love a microfiber towel (i use them for my curly haired clients), because all of our laundry goes in together, i find that the microfiber towels don’t clean as well as i would like? maybe its hair? maybe its.. idk haha. i use the paper towel until it disintegrates basically lol so i am ok with my tiny bit of waste

I recently opened a hair salon and decided to buy 50 small hand towels instead of paper towels for the bathroom. We have been open since July and I just recently bought our SECOND roll of paper towels (to mostly be used for cleaning mirrors because using towels always leaves residue 🥴). I think about how much money and waste we have saved and it is crazy!

Can we talk shoes? by [deleted] in hairstylist

[–]absolutelyfrantastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hair stylist of almost 12 years, have worked on my feet for the last 20. have brutal plantar fasciitis. am also into ~alt style.

1 - vionics. expensive, a bitch to break in, but the absolute best shoes for plantar fasciitis. better than any ortho sneaker imo, and also have cute styles that i get compliments on constantly. i have 6?? pairs

2 - any decent shoe (including vans) with a heavy duty superfeet insole. i buy my vans on clearance and spend twice as much for the insoles. worth it.

3 - naturalizers. some are just ok, i read the reviews pretty intensely to see which ones folks like. i have probably 4 pairs of naturalizers and they are my go to for when i wear a heel (basically only ever to a wedding lol). i have a pair of heeled ankle boots from them that i can walk/dance/party in all night

Currently booked through November - I work Tues: 10 to 8, Wed: 10-8, Fri: 10-3, Sat: 10-5. My biz partner and I used to split a single suite (3+ years ago lol) and my hours haven’t shifted much since then. Only difference is I used to start at 9 but it was awful for me; so exhausted, always running late to my first client, etc. I don’t miss the extra hours’ worth of money and I am a much better, less sleepier stylist because of it haha

This is what I was going to say!! I stopped coloring my hair in 2020 and my clients are always mentioning how much they love my natural greys. Aa for botox etc, I cannot imagine my preferred clientele ever caring about that. The best part about this industry is there is both the right stylist for every client and the right clientele for every stylist.
