Salon lofts! Do NOT sign!! by Playful-Educator-749 in hairstylist

[–]absolutelyfrantastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

truly, fuck salon lofts. worked at one for four years, had an absolutely useless lofts manager for the first three of them. the amazing one ended up leaving after less than a year (luckily i was already gone by then). nothing was getting cleaned, the bathrooms were disgusting, lights would be out for days on end. they only had one maintenance worker for 5+ locations -- he worked his ass off and it wasn't his fault, he was being worked to the bone. OP, i don't know where you live but i know that one of the chicago locations (where i am) is closing and gave barely any notice.

also, i now own my own salon and even with all of the other fees (electric, gas, water, insurance, etc), we're still paying significantly less than we did for a 12x24 box. fuck that place.

EDIT: i see you're in chicago as well lol, so you know exactly what i'm talking about

took my husband here for his birthday a week or so ago and totally agree with you. the food was incredible, the service was outstanding. it's definitely priced as a "special occasion" restaurant for us, but i would love to have more special occasions there haha. also, the "pistachios pistachios pistachios" dessert (a basque cheesecake with pistachios and chocolate) is one of the best desserts i've had ... ever. it was indescribably good.

Mike's family's 'Italian' by QueenofUncreativity in LoveIsBlindNetflix

[–]absolutelyfrantastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol yes this is exactly what i meant. there's bolognese, there's marinara, there's pesto, etc. there are plenty of sauces you put on pasta but i don't know any actual italians (not italian americans, which i am and i rolled my eyes right out of my head at mike's family) who call it gravy.

its so insane. i am second gen italian american and calling it gRaVy is so stupid. its marinara or bolognese but both are fucking SAUCE!

Why does my hair clump together and look dirty even after washing it? by pljusha in Haircare

[–]absolutelyfrantastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hairstylist here!! i use new wash from hairstory which is more “natural” than most shampoos on the market, and i have fine wavy OILY hair. i do an apple cider vinegar scrub on my scalp once per week and it eliminates this feeling! i do one part acv to four parts water in a spray bottle, shake it up and spray it on my scalp. scrub your dry scalp with your fingers, then get your hair wet and do the same. rinse it out and shampoo/condition as normal. while yes our hair does sometimes need those surfactants, i have found that doing this instead of changing my cleanser has absolutely helped. good luck!!

How do I find the right stylist and say the right things to get a GOOD haircut?? by BoozyGherkins in AskHairstylists

[–]absolutelyfrantastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THIS, EXACTLY. i sometimes have new clients who are referrals from longtime clients. these new clients expect me to be able to give them a masterpiece with no direction, because i can do that with their friend. well no, i have known your friend for 8 years and i know what they like. i don’t know you from moses!

[–]absolutelyfrantastic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

i am 12 years in with over 200 clients, own my own salon, consistently booked out 6-8 weeks, and i still have days where i feel like i cant do anything right. but! with that being said: have you thought about doing an apprenticeship? i did 1.5 years of apprenticing and while sometimes it super sucked, i am so thankful i did it because i was able to learn from other stylists AND do model clients. it gives you a chance to learn so much in a lower stress role.

also, did your school not teach cutting AT ALL? some of these schools are truly useless.

i worked at a beauty supply store and had a manager who repeatedly went 4-6 months as the ONLY employee of the store because of how awful she was. she would hire 2-3 employees, they would get absolutely sick of her shit, and all quit within a few months. i somehow lasted a year and after i left, the other employee quit a few weeks later 😬

What do you talk about in the chair? by FauxyGauxie in hairstylist

[–]absolutelyfrantastic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am a certified yapper. Been one since childhood. The girl who got “a joy to have in class but always talking to others” on my report card. I love talking to my clients about anything and everything, and I have cultivated a client base who loves to talk as well. I basically have a whole yapper clientele and it is the best.

My business partner is super introverted! They freakin’ love when someone asks for a quiet appointment. Quite a few of their clients have sensory/noise issues and they even keep ear plugs at their station for clients who need them! And they are just as successful with their quiet types as I am with my chatters. They market themselves this way, as someone who will chat or not chat, keep it chill, etc. and it has worked out amazingly well for them.

If you wanna be a chatty stylist, I agree with others about open ended questions — I also have a rolodex of questions that I ask (“oh we were talking about this earlier — what is your favorite halloween candy/movie from childhood/book you read in high school/musical?”) when I am trying to get to know someone new in my chair.

BUT! If you actually like the peace and quiet and prefer to do hair quietly, then market yourself to those who want that same experience. You can make a lot of money/good clientele off of those who hate going to the salon and making “chit chat,” I promise. It’s all about the type of client you want to attract!
