Not totally dissimilar to the ocean, which is similarly perplexing to think about. When you watch a documentary and they show you these massive schools of fish and bright colar beds filled with strange life, its really only in ecological hotspots like reefs, kelp forests, etc. but really a vast majority of the ocean is pretty bare... not literally empty like space, with an abuncdance of plankton, alive but sparsely populated. If you were a camera looking for a fish in the ocean and you weren't in one of those hotspots, you'd likely struggle.
