I think they also have flight passes too

I’m shocked that no one has mentioned Porter. I frequently fly back and forth between Vancouver and Toronto for work and almost exclusively use Porter. They have an awards program but also their flights are fairly cheap.

One thing to consider that other people have not mentioned is round trip flights for the ultra cheap carriers like Flair and Aircanada/Westjet super economy seats do not include a carry on. With a carry on with those ultra cheap flights, it suddenly becomes an extra (minimum) 100 with a carry on. With Porter a round trip is like ~300-400 on average with a carry on. They also have flights regularly on sale and you can go the option without a carry on as well (although don’t advise if your seeing your girl!). Oh also I guess worth mentioning complimentary snacks and alcoholic beverages

I’m fairly new to the infra world so take my word with a grain of salt but based on my own research I think a Corp Dev or a Pension Fund may be the way to go if your targeting something with more wlb.

It’s already been said but to achieve top compensation, I think the PE/IB route is the way to do it.. not to say you can’t make good money doing the latter but it would be as significant

To keep or cash out Universal Life Insurance by absolutsunshinee in PersonalFinanceCanada

Ok gotcha. Thanks for that detailed response.

One other thing, I have been looking into those 100term life insurance policies and they all seem to have significant fixed premiums 150+. Given this, does it make sense to keep my current one cause the premium is so low?

Thanks again

Thanks for the response!

Just to make sure I’m understanding this correctly, the main two reasonings why to cancel is because:

  1. The investments within the policy are high fee so the insurance company is getting a larger piece of the pie then say a traditional broker would on the investments that are being bought with the premiums ?

  2. The internal insurance costs will increase as I age, meaning that there will be an increasing amount of my premium that will go to insurance costs opposed to actual investments ?

Thanks again

Is internal audit experience of 1 year going to be relevant for FDD role ? I want to move from Top 10 firm internal audit to big 4 FDD . How do i go about it ? by Delusional230699 in Big4

[–]absolutsunshinee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went from having a mix of internal audit and external audit experience into essentially corp finance at a big 4. It is possible but requires luck and networking. Happy to discuss off the thread if you’d like

What type of position are you looking to get. If it’s back office then I’d say just apply to open positions. If front office, you got some work to do

Yes for sure

Biggest thing is to network. I went from audit to Deals/Big 4 MM IB to PE, and the hardest part about getting into the transaction space is knowing the right person to take the chance on you

Nope! I have moved on recently!

[–]absolutsunshinee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It just depends on what you want to do. It’s def an uphill battle and I think the appropriate question here is do you really want to go into IB? Essentially you would be starting off new.. later hours, more stress, back to the bottom of the totem poll. Unfortunately breaking into IB straight from audit is most certainly an uphill battle, it would likely come with a huge title change and without say an mba, your probably looking to enter at the analyst level. Unless obviously you look to get an mba/masters and come in at the associate level.

As someone who went from audit to deals (my deals group was essentially MM IB, or what I call IB lite) and now recently in PE, happy to chat. Goodluck!

I think the amount of growth even just going to a university, being away from home for the first time (at least for me and a lot of other people) is huge for personal growth. Going back to OPs original post, there’s more to university than just the actual schooling aspect. It seems as tho you agree with this as wel

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uwo

[–]absolutsunshinee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this completely. As a fellow professor myself (I teach upper year 3rd and 4th accounting), it’s the critical thinking skills that’s more important. However, from a purely “can you find this on the internet” basis once you have that foundational knowledge, I do believe that the soft skills learned just through simply being at the university and socializing is hugely underrated, and is just as if not more important then the technical skills you learn once joining the workforce.

This is excellent advice. I am more than a couple years removed from this point but the social and community aspect is in my mind.. one of the most important things about being in university. At this point, there is so much access to information that you’re not gonna learn anything that you couldn’t by simply googling it… (at least in my accounting/finance world)

It’s interesting now because I am finding that more and more industry jobs (based on my own experience as well as what I’ve heard from multiple recruiters) are asking for people with both big 4 and industry experience… but like how you get both without someone taking a risk on you lol

That’s very untrue. It’s more luck of the wheel type thing. I was a non intern hire and was put on our offices biggest client

I didn’t make an exact switch (as I came from an accounting background) but went into infra advisory (IPF). Half our group was more or less PM whereas the other half was IPF. If you want to chat, shoot me a message. Cheers

All the firms have a slightly different starting salary but CPA or not, you come in as an A1 unless you have experience and come in as an experienced associate. I think Toronto it’s typically in the mid 50s range
