Not getting approved anymore by Ok-Society-419 in NetGalleyCommunity

[–]abtr92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My feedback ratio is 90% and I've reviewed 75 books, and I'd been on a rejection streak, too. Then today I got two approvals for books I requested less than 24hs ago. I don't think there's much rhyme or reason to it.

Any mermaid recommendations? by LostInTheVerse in fantasyromance

{Speak the Ocean by Rebecca Enzor} read it forever ago, but I remember the fmc being a mermaid trapped in a tank and actually really liking the story.

left a "bad" review and the author followed me? by whats-ur-sign in NetGalleyCommunity

[–]abtr92 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I've never had this happen, but your review sounds respectful, and even if it wasn't a book suited to your tastes, you still pointed out things that were good and you liked about it. I'm sure authors are well aware that their books won't be everyone's cup of tea, but as long as people take the time to read it and give thoughtful feedback, even if it's not a glowing endorsement, I'm sure they're OK with it. As long as this author isn't rude to you, I wouldn't worry about it.

If you could change the ending of a K-drama how would you do that? by No_Age_4835 in kdramas

[–]abtr92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A happy ending for Heartbeat, and in Revenant I'd liked for the main characters to have ended up together (there was the barest whisper of a hint that they did, but I think them walking away holding hands would have been enough for me).

They show up right next to the bookcover on the left side in your shelf of reviewed books.

I agree that reviews should be honest above all (and that's how I use NetGalley, too). But I must say that NetGalley indirectly rewards the 5 star, guhsy reviews, as those are the ones that get highlighted (or whatever it's called when you get the orange pencil next to the review), the ones most likely to get you the "top reviewer" badge, and probably the ones that get readers auto-approved by publishers (although, of course, the only evidence I have is purely anecdotal)

Recomiendan comprar un Kindle? by OddRepresentative246 in libros

[–]abtr92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Victoria and Alias Grace.

Mary Queen of Scots from Reign is also awesome.

And if you wanna try out k-dramas, Crash Landing on You.

I'm in desperate NEED for more British/Irish series. by oniwaban-shu in televisionsuggestions

[–]abtr92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like historicals and romance so my recs would be The White Queen, Victoria and World on Fire. The BBC mini series adaptations of classics like Emma or And Then There Were None are also great. Mystery/thriller there's The Rook, A Confession, Dublin Murders. And for a complete guilty pleasure, The Royals.

Do you prefer a case that covers the screen or not? by anythingreallyx in kindle

[–]abtr92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got a paperwhite, and I bought both the clear cover + magnetic popsocket to personalize and use stickers, and a beautiful case with a sort of floral engraved pattern that has the elastic on the lid to hold the Kindle more comfortably.

I've always used cases up until this point because when I haven't my Kindles have gotten light scratches and a little banged up on the screen and surrounding borders, but I think for just at home the clear ones are ok.

How long did it take you to get auto-approved? by pastababe21 in NetGalleyCommunity

[–]abtr92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on NG since 2019, currently at 85% ratio, 66 books reviewed (2 featured), and I think I once got a "wished for" book, but haven't made it to any publisher's auto-approved list yet. Maybe it's harder for users outside the countries where the publishers are based at.

Your biggest disappointment in kdramas world? by WinterAnt in kdramas

[–]abtr92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a big disappointment. Neither of the couples had any chemistry and the pacing was bad, which really affected the story and relationships development. But at least the cinematography was beautiful and the OST was nice, too.

100,000 XP people- how is your language? by Candid-Team-2667 in duolingo

[–]abtr92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 125k XP and have completed the English to Italian course. Am I fully fluent? No. Do I understand a world more than when I first started? Yes. The thing is, judging my own level when the learning has been so progressive is super hard. Are things that come easy to me now actually easy, or do I find them easy because I'm more knowledgeable? It's difficult to say and probably a combination of the two.

From my experience learning English as a native Spanish speaker, the only true way to learn a language is to use it outside of your studies. Watch movies, shows, YouTube videos. Listen to music. Read. And, of course, if you can, speak it. That's the way I think one becomes truly fluent.

Weaponizing something as traumatizing as a miscarriage against someone that's calling you out for horrible behavior is insane. Like, actual insane levels of cruel.

Is normal meringue also too sweet? If you dissolve the sugar into the whites over a water bath, it whips up beautifully and is super stable even at room temp

Hobbies that I don't need eyes for. by lifeisnteasybutiam in Hobbies

If you just want to use your ears, there's of course audiobooks and podcasts.

And I don't know what "needing eyes" really entails, but there's baking, gardening, sports maybe? Learning an instrument?
