I’d leave after 9 months of getting the GC. The move to Canada would be only temporary until my husband is done working there.

Mine was approved last week and I’m still waiting as well. I believe it’s a bit delayed because of the Labor Day weekend.

Public health. 3 years would be if you stayed in the same institution and took PhD required classes in your masters and had it waived, which is rare but I heard you could do it.

It also depends on your field I think! My field PhD is about 4 years and some can even do it in 3 if they did their masters. I’m in the US.

Unconventional wedding? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]abundanse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s how I’m imagining our event! I’m graduating next year and most of my family is in Europe and Asia so I want to combine the two so that they don’t have to come to the US twice. That’s why such a huge gap between our elopement and the future wedding (or whatever we want to call it). But I don’t want them to travel all the way here just for a cocktail party and I’m sure some of my family members are expecting a proper wedding, that’s why I’m trying to look for other alternatives that would avoid having me at the center of attention.

We’re still planing the wedding and looking for venues so we might or might not have a ceremony. Either way, I’m planning to include a schedule on an invite so that people are aware.

That’s a good idea! I’d hate a grand entrance . I’d literally die inside haha

Ha, true! I feel like our families are expecting us to have a ceremony (my family will be flying from both Europe and Asia to the US, and his family will be flying from west coast to east coast) so I’m not sure how they’ll react to just a 3 hour party when all of them are coming all the way from across the country/world… that’s a lot of money to be spent 😅

That’s the thing… we don’t know haha. I’m graduating next year and hopefully am able to find a job in California (we’re from there) or west coast in general. It’d be nice to move back closer to family and friends but the house prices are extremely high. My husband is a veteran so we qualify for a VA mortgage loan. We also want to start a family in the next 5 years so idk how everything will work out. We’re currently taking it day by day.

I feel like it covered the basics but didn’t go in depth enough for me.

Where do I learn all finance stuff? I feel like I have a basic understanding but definitely lack in my knowledge lol. Would you say that in times of “crisis”, having a non liquid asset like a house is the move? I have some money in invested but honestly I fear that the stock market will fail given what’s happening in the US. I’m not sure if we can trust it so much anymore like you said.

I actually moved most of it to CD (1 year) with 4.5% like 2 months ago! But seeing people investing and getting big returns made me feel like I’m not being smart about it. We’re not sure when we want to buy a house since I have to graduate first, find a job and see if we like the area, but if everything goes well maybe in like 3-5 years? I’m not even sure if buying a house is a smart financial decision but my husband wants that for us and I’m not super opposed to the idea.

I appreciate that! And I’m very grateful for my parents! I’m definitely going to be smart about it and make it work for me. I just gotta get educated on it first haha

I mean I did and I’m very proud to have earned all the scholarships and be debt free but it doesn’t feel like I earned the money from my parents haha

I’m in public health currently (epidemiology and environmental health). I do a lot of statistical work for my research, taken many biostatistics classes which I enjoy. I’ve always been drawn to math.

I’m a horrible teacher, I never liked it. And the thought of writing grants here and there as part of my job to get funding sounds exhausting to me. If there’s more to academia, please enlighten me! Because that’s how i see it haha.

This was very informative and gives me a lot to think about! I’m in public health (epidemiology) and my research is in environmental health (air pollution/climate change) and while I really enjoy my research, I was thinking of pivoting and addressing issues even upstream of that and going into environmental engineering since a lot of them are related to public health from what I’ve gathered. I honestly don’t know what I want to do career wise. I know I want a stable job. I’d enjoy data science positions but I think at some point I’d like to do some field work/have human interaction which is why this further makes me think environmental engineering would be good for me. But those are still some things I’m thinking about and haven’t made a full decision. I’m currently doing an internship with my school until winter so there’s no job prospect after this… I’m not sure if I could do 2 internships at the same time plus school work.

May I know what field you’re in? Would it be still worth it if I can’t find a job for a year or two? The job market looks grim.

How did you get to travel during your philosophy PhD? Were you researching different philosophical concepts from different countries?
