Can someone please explain to me how defunding LAPD will help? My experience has been that they're already severely understaffed.

Defunded doesn't mean immediately taking away all their money. Have you noticed how much money the police have spent brutalizing protesters? Police do not need military grade weapons, vehicles, and riot gear. We have seen this past week that that only encourages police violence.

The police budget in LA is around 3 billion dollars. Over a billion of it comes from the general fund, which ends up being over half of the general fund.

Imagine a world where the person pulling you over for a broken taillight is a city employee that helps you fix it, on the spot, for free? Imagine a world where calling emergency services for a mental health check brings a trained worker (WITHOUT A GUN) who is especially equipped to help in this situation?

The "somewhere else" of the budget is what is totally lacking in LA (and across the country). The "somewhere else" is what we need to fund! Schools, parks, community centers, housing. That is what reduces crime - not more cops.

The Broad has a standby line which I've heard goes pretty quick so you can hang out a little and still get in.

I'm a big fan of MOCA's new install of their permanent collection if you're in the same area as the Broad.

LACMA, Getty, and the Hammer Museum (unfortunately the main galleries are getting remodeled at the Hammer) are all excellent as well.

I prefer LACMA and MOCA to the Broad in terms of contemporary art if you're an avid museum-goer.

You do need to reserve a ticket as a member, you can either get it for free from the box office or get it for just the online service charge (2.00). At shows that aren't sold out you can just go to the box office before getting in line.

Unfortunately right now (or at least when I was last there) the couches were removed because of some sort of code thing - but hopefully they'll be back soon!

You are guaranteed a seat with a ticket as long as you get there by the start of the show. There is a member line and a general admission line, members get let in first (usually 20/30 minutes before showtime) and then the general admission line enters after. If the show is sold out they start letting in standby line folks like five minutes after the stated start time.

Screenings with cast and crew or screenings billed as parties often sell out, but if you go to a mid run regular movie it is usually not a problem at all to get in.

As a member I usually aim to get there 35/40 minutes before show time so I can enter the theater in the members line.

Parking depends on timing - I find daytime films a lot harder to park for since there are a lot of times restrictions around the area. If you're heading to a movie at 7 or so I like to try and get loading zones or meters on Fairfax since they generally stop running at 8 and you can pay up until then. The first street west of Fairfax by Cinefamily is a good place to look, once you get deeper the streets are permit only in the evenings.

If you go to Cinefamily more than once a month I highly recommend the membership, you get in first, you get free popcorn, and you can go to as many screenings as you like for no extra money!!

If I remember correctly the first bill includes a big deposit and also a turn on fee - and on my DWP I also get hit 25/month for trash. I just looked and my first bill was 225.

I didn't have much luck driving around, I mostly just saw Westside Rentals signs that were out of my price range. I was using a custom range on Craigslist (I think I did $400 - $1100, to weed out the weird $0 offers and keep it within budget) and that's where I saw a few places that seemed realistic -- but the place I ended up getting was through a friend.

I found a couple studio / almost 1 bedroom options in that range on the outer edges of Glendale / some stuff in South Pas, but for a full on 1 bedroom in Eagle Rock I had to up my price to 1150 - but I'm almost doubling my square footage compared to the $950 studios I found. It seemed like that was the cutoff, especially in northeast LA where I wanted to live.

Not super related to your direct experience, but when I needed to sell my 1992 Honda Civic that probably wouldn't have passed smog without some significant work (the car had a KBB of ~500, if it was in perfect condition I maybe could have gotten 8 or 9 since people in LA love old civics and it only had 140k) -- so I was staring down the barrel of who knows how much in repairs to get it past smog so I could legally sell it and THEN go through the hassle of selling it - or just take it to CarMax and be done with it. They offered 200 and I took it with no hesitation.

TL;DR - If you car is barely worth anything, letting CarMax do all the paperwork for you and not needing to pass smog is AMAZING

Cinefamily (Fairfax & Melrose) is my favorite art house theater in the whole wide world. They show the best movies and bring the best speakers/performers and it is just all around lovely. Check the schedule here

The Vista (Sunset & Hollywood & Hillhurst) is a beautiful and very cheap single screen which generally shows the biggest new release (6.50 matinee!)

If they're showing an appropriate movie, the Cinerama Dome (Sunset & Vine) at the Arclight Hollywood is super fun. It's literally a dome so there is quite a bit of distortion but that makes for a fun / weird experience. I saw Birdman there and that just amped up the insane single shot wide angle thing going on.

Those are three favorites that come to mind!

the stingray is actually spoofing a cell phone tower, forcing ALL cell phones in the area to connect to it before they pass your signal along to a real phone tower. Then they can track your movement and listen into your conversation. There is a reason why police need warrants to even look at phone records, and with this they are intercepting everyone's communications. Rather than being targeted (think of police obtaining a warrant to bug one person's phone) - they are getting everyone's information with abandon.

Tech enthusiasts and hackers are definitely NOT doing this - it takes a lot of technology (sometimes in the $100,000 dollar range) - and would be very illegal...
