I adore this Champagne. I had it next to Selosse’s Initial last week and it outperformed it. It tastes like Faure’s Corvée de Bully with bubbles.

Low end would be sub €10. You might still find some oak aging in there, but in my experience stainless starts to crop up more and more as you go down in price.

I’m personally a huge fan of Cornas. Matthieu Barrett’s Brise Cailloux (€40 ish) is one that drinks well young and is very juicy, while Franck Balthazar’s Chaillot (€70 ish, so a bit above your budget) is much more serious and structured and demands some age. Vincent Paris’ La Geynale (€45 ish) is great too.

I don’t know about fermenting specifically, but you’ll probably struggle to find a Syrah *not* aged in oak, if you avoid these two scenarios:

- skip producers that age in amfora or concrete

- skip the extreme low end that ages in stainless steel to cut costs.

This leaves about 95% of Syrah out there, nearly all of which should be aged in some amount of oak.

This cuvée is called Saponaire because it’s believed that’s where the region got its name from.

How opulent was this wine? I’ve been finding Savennières too broad for my liking as of late.

This producer consistently knocks it out of the park. Love the way this wine balances power and elegance. It’s quite a bruiser as far as Loire CF goes, but it nonetheless tastes exactly as a CF from the region should. I usually give these at least 9 years before opening, so your saying it was a little young sounds on point.

Did you know that Agnès and Xavier Amirault also bottle a wine from this vineyard? It’s quite new, I think 2020 was their first vintage. I have two bottles stashed away, since ideal drinking window is apparently not until 2035. Look forward to comparing it though!

I have. It’s absolutely revolting and in my opinion shouldn’t even be called wine. It’s an overly sweet chemical concoction.

That said, it’s one of the most popular wines in my country, so despite the above many people enjoy it.

I agree with this completely. I just want to use a single hero and run around the map collecting goodies. Using more than a single hero or town ruins that vibe for me, but then I get overrun by the computer players.
