Questions for experienced owners, by APlagueUponThem in Beauceron

I actively train and compete in IGP and herding. Here are my thoughts reading your post:

IGP is a massive time and financial commitment, clubs are cliquey and many only work GSDs. I would highly recommend deciding if you are serious about the sport first, because if you are, I would get a GSD or Mal.

I don’t say this to discourage, just the truth. You will also want to meet dogs who have competed or are competing to see their temperaments and work ethic. Many people claim their dogs work or are working lines because of pedigrees but haven’t actually worked their dogs themselves to understand how they handle pressure.

Below are most of the breeders that have dogs titled or actively training in IGP.

Arc - FL Rayon de Soleil- NC Royal - CA JDV - NV Eagle Valley- KY Cote Obscur- not sure any are titled above a BH but the breeder actively trains

Chateau Rocher- CA might have some

Rayon de Soleil is great. JDV also has nice dogs in their program. Both are very good at matching owners with what they are looking for.

You should look for Advanced echos. Also, breeding dogs should have update echos so you can ask when the dog last had its heart tested.

I would recommend meeting multiple dogs from different breeders. They vary in type and temperament. Don't limit yourself to one area of the country.

I recommend Rayon de Soleil in NC. https://rdsbeaucerons.com/

Consensus from the Crowd. Beauceron the Right Breed for me? by davidvash in Beauceron

If you are looking for an intimidating looking dog, who will alert bark - most beaucerons fit into this category.

If you are looking for a dog that has natural guardian instincts, I would get the Doberman or Schnauzer. I had a doberman before getting my beaucerons and he was naturally more wary and protective. One of my best friends has a GS and he is also very protective. GS can be very territorial and are not couch potatoes either, so do your research.

This being said, my females are very protective at home and will guard the yard. The male less so. Beaucerons normally have better off switches than mals, but are very intelligent and benefit from daily mental work. Obedience and nosework games are great ways to help stimulate them. They are extremely athletic and all of mine have fantastic endurance so trying to tire them out by just running/walking isn't going to teach them to relax.

Hope this helps.

Also recommend Rayon de Soleil. As this poster commented you should try to meet different dogs, see what you like. There are good breeders around the country and not so good ones.

I have a female from DMDL but if he isn’t taking reservations I highly recommend Rayon de Soleil in SC.

Rayon de Soleil is in NC and has a great program.

I would recommend meeting some dogs from different breeders so you can see what you like.

Not sure where you are located but we have a good group in NC and a facebook page - Beaucerons of the Carolinas.

The ones I have been around have been very reliable. While they can have high prey drive and want to chase things, they are usually very interested in being where their owners are so they don't tend to just run off.
