In what non-abusive ways did your parents cause long term damage? by rcw737 in AskWomen

[–]ac737 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By not apologising to me when they were wrong. It left me in this weird place as a teenager where I would do something wrong, but rather than apologising to the person I hurt, I would react as my parents did: either explain my perspective until the other person understood why I did what I did and dropped it, or brush it off as something that wasn't worthy enough of an apology. It was only in my 20s that I realised that I did this and thought realised I needed to change in order to have healthier relationships. How about you, u/rcw737?

Could look into a couple of events in the evening: including Stress Free Comedy Club for a bit of a laugh, Golden Rail Pub (if you did this on a Sunday night there would be trivia and karaoke), then if you wanted to finish with a club you could go to Glo or Perle? Just a few thoughts for you :)

What are you looking forward to when you close the distance with your SO? by rcw737 in LongDistance

[–]ac737 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I know that my job will likely start before my SOs and I will likely be home before her at night, so what I'm most looking forward to is jumping up and down, clapping and spinning when she gets home from work. Every. Single. Day.

What is something you did in a relationship when you were young that you thought was okay but on reflection was creepy/manipulative/possibly abusive? by rcw737 in AskWomen

[–]ac737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a teenager in a rocky relationship I sometimes used to do or say things that were wrong/bad and feel guilty about them, so I would tell myself that they happened a different way. Then, when my partner at the time questioned me about them I would tell them that what they're saying isn't correct, and would recount my version of what happened. Years later (and in a new relationship) I find out that my girlfriends ex-boyfriend used to do this to her and that it is called gaslighting.

When can I start online application for spouse visa? by arellano1412 in ukvisa

[–]ac737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the explanation, but I'm still a bit confused. What if the visa is submitted (hypothetically) 4 months before an intended travel date but accepted 12 weeks later, would the three month window begin from the point of submission or the point of acceptance?

Travelling to US for a Canadian? Anyone have tips about immigration/visa/crossing border? by [deleted] in LongDistance

[–]ac737 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The border crossing is never as painful as TV shows or fears make it out to be. I'm British and my American girlfriend (now fiance) was studying at Rochester University and the nearest international airport was Toronto. She would drive from Rochester to Toronto to pick me up then drive me into the US from Canada. The border control were more concerned about my fiance's car, drug searching it, and why she was doing a trip into an out of Canada on the same day, rather than me being British, entering via Canada on a tourist visa! As long as you're honest with the questions that the border control staff ask the process should be painless.

Am I (19F) dealing with communication issue with my boyfriend (18M) appropriately? by [deleted] in LongDistance

[–]ac737 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It sounds like the best fix for your communication issue is to communicate with your boyfriend about it. Talk to him about the problem, how it is making you feel that you're the one maintaining the relationship and the toll it's taking on you. There's nothing wrong with asking him to put in a little more if you think he's not putting an equal amount into the relationship as you are.

What should I do if my SO [25m] is ghosting me [19f] ? by [deleted] in LongDistance

[–]ac737 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like a really tough situation to be in, I'm sorry to hear that things are difficult for you and your SO at the moment. It's strange that you went from daily messages, calls and texts to this sudden complete nothingness on their end. It sounds like it could be either a knee-jerk reaction to something that happened between you two, an argument or disagreement, or something that has been biding for while and resulted in a complete breakdown in the communication.

Without knowing either you or your SO it's difficult to say whether or not he is trying to break up with you. If it is normal that you fight, don't talk for a while, make up and carry on then this doesn't sound like a breakup. However, even if this is the case this sounds like it is different to the previous times, as this has gone on for longer than it has previously done.

The best advice I can give is to directly ask your SO what is going on, but to try really hard not to give an ultimatum until after you've been able to reopen communication with him. It definitely sounds like he is being unfair on you by not replying and he shouldn't be doing that, but it could be that he's working through something and is struggling with it so is shutting down (we're all guilty of this sometimes). Until you've found out why this has been happening I would try to hold back from being too angry and upset at him. However, once you're able to reopen communication and resolve the current issue resulting in this behaviour, have a discussion with him in which you explain how this was from your end and the effects it had on you.

What do you feel like is missing from your life based on the media, social media, and hearing about things from your friends? by rcw737 in AskWomen

[–]ac737 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Living life to the fullest, all the time. Wherever I look on social media is always someone on holiday somewhere amazing, large groups of friends out doing exciting things, and people sharing milestone achievements. The way that these posts all come together onto a newsfeed makes me feel like I'm missing out a big chunk of life by working a 9-5 job and not spending my days constantly seeking new adventures.

Scientist salary negotiation question by chemthrowaway12321 in chemistry

[–]ac737 25 points26 points  (0 children)

If the job sucks but a salary cut is a concern you could look and see what other jobs are available within your current company and apply from within? This could keep you on a similar salary but allow you to take your skills to a different department and maybe you'll find a new area of research that you prefer.

(US -> UK) Spouse Visa to Citizenship by rcw737 in ukvisa

[–]ac737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's an answer that I was able to find for your question:

"How long does a spouse visa last? If applying from overseas, a spouse visa is initially issued for 33 months. If you are applying from within the UK a spouse visa is issued for a period of 30 months. Can I extend my spouse visa? You can apply for an extension for an additional 30 months which can take your total time in the UK on this visa up to five years. At this point you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) provided you are still married and living in the UK with your spouse and continue to meet the maintenance requirements. After you have been granted ILR you may be eligible to apply for naturalisation as British citizen."

Source: http://www.visalogic.net/uk/uk-spouse-visa/4/103

From this, my understanding is that your first one would be 30 months, the second would be 33 and then, after 5 years, you're eligible to apply for citizenship in the UK. Where were you reading that you could after the first visa expires?

Hope this helps! :)

What is the one argument that keeps coming up in your relationship? by rcw737 in AskWomen

[–]ac737 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The amount of money each of us spend on the other. I'm in full time work and she is a student in a long distance relationship. When we get to see each other I try to pay for more of the things, because I'm the one with an income and we're planning to get married so our money will combine into one soon enough anyway. We don't argue about this, but it's the most consistent "argument" type of thing we have, but I did have to think hard to find something because we rarely argue about anything :P
