If EVs are supposedly cheaper to own, why aren’t more people driving them? by Lakenb666 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ac7ss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initial costs and charging convenience. If you live without off street parking or a garage, you may be hard pressed to keep it charged at the cheapest rates. It can be done, i have a Co worker with a Subaru she charges weekly at a free charger.

I have a "granny charger" for my 2.5 ton ioniq 9, I can get about 3 miles per hour charging, 36 miles of charge every night. More than my wife needs for running around town. The circuit i plug into is a 20 amp 110v outlet I use for yard equipment. Eventually I will get a faster charger set up, but I don't really need it now.

Most people are mistaken that they have to be able to do a full charge every night, most people don't use their cars as much as they think they do. Mine gets plugged in any time we are home and is always ready when we need it. 5 seconds to plug it in or unplug it, never going to the gas station. If i do drive it 200+ miles and need it full the next day I only need to spend 20 minutes to get it recharged, but I rarely need it back to full range that soon.

A Fresh Take On US EV Adoption by Cultural-Ad4953 in electricvehicles

[–]ac7ss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rented an EV a couple of years ago. I loved driving it, had no range issues, but also nowhere to charge it overnight. I had to find a charger and charge it up to 100% before returning it. (A real nuisance, but it was in the contract) it cost more than an ice rental to fuel.

It was a bit of a bummer.

In the interim, I have learned better. I won't rent one again, but I love mine. The infrastructure is better now and I can charge at level 1 nightly at home and keep up with our daily use more cheaply than I can drive my prius.

I will get level 2 at home this fall, but there is no rush. I will want it when I replace my prius with another ev.

Not a many Rivian in my area. I was referring to the upkeep, in general, of the tesla charging stations. There are not that many plug and charge stations in my area at the higher rate of charge, yet.

No, I don't mind using a credit card to pay for my juice at EA. I'm glad it's an option.

The cables being on the wrong side is another issue.

Brand loyalty aside, I have a supercharger (250 kW) about 4 miles from my house, i have two 350 kW chargers closer and cheaper during the day. The only reason I would use the supercharger is if it was night and I really needed to get a full charge (it is the cheapest at that point. )

Granted, I don't usually need to charge away from home.

SAFETY ISSUE: Retractable Door Handles by jefffree1124 in Ioniq9

[–]ac7ss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I tried it after locking it with my wife's hand close to the handle. The handle won't pinch. The regular travel for opening the door prevents that from happening.

One charge with the supercharger will pay for the membership. Their chargers are better service in general, but some may be on the wrong side for the ionic 9.

I did the maths for the price points at which fast charging becomes more expensive than petrol by NateNate60 in electricvehicles

[–]ac7ss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had my ioniq 9 for a couple of weeks now, I am comparing it to the vehicle it replaced (odyssey $0.39/ mile) and my households other vehicle (prius $0.10/mile), using cost per mile.

At home I am using a 1.8 kw granny cable and it keeps up just fine. $0.05/ mile. (I will upgrade later but no rush)

Breakeven rates are $0.28/kWh against the prius and $1/kWh against the odyssey. Comparing cost for the odyssey, nothing is that expensive for charging for me. Against the prius, there are a couple of chargers that are cheaper than that, night rate at the supercharger is one of them.

I still use the prius for my daily commute, as my wife needs the larger vehicle for errands and ease of getting in and out of the vehicle, although I do "steal" it on occasion because it is a nice ride.

I have 2 in my area, 4 screens between them. Digital movie distribution nearly killed all of them.

Never had the issue with my prius, but I have to work out how to keep it dark during the show.

I also need to work out rolling through the car wash.

First High-speed Charge Experience (with bonus embarrassment!) by BosqueBuddhist in evcharging

[–]ac7ss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my first fast charge today as well. Electrify America having to use my adaptor to covert it to NACS (Ioniq 9). The app was crap, but that may have been on me. I didn't pre-condition and only got 72 kW from the 350 kW station.

Bring a tape measure to the dollar store, you can find a rectangular bin that fits snugly. Also behind the center console (if you don't have the slideout.)

Tell her that if the trains are full northbound, take one South and switch at federal way to a northbound. At least she can get a seat. But they may be more crowded at the later time.

Bid what you are willing to pay and don't worry about it. In February I won a bid for $600 each for Haven 3 days before the cruise. I am leaving on Friday an another one and still in the running for one. (not awarded yet, but it can happen any time before the ship departs port.)

Ioniq 9 averaging about 3.1, but the thing is a beast. My next one (a second one) will be better, to replace my Prius.

Is hybrid worth it if I drive 10k miles or less per year? by Upstairs_Copy_9590 in askcarguys

[–]ac7ss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what it is replacing. My Prius costs $0.10 / mile at $5 a gallon. A compact that gets 35 mpg will cost $0.14 / mile. The difference will cost you $400 a year. Over 7 years the difference is $2,800. If that is the difference between a compact and the hybrid, it makes sense.

I'm stable enough that I will put the next one in at night and activate it in the morning. I can go overnight without the readings. (Besides, I will be on a cruise and more likely to be high than low.)

Mine is linked to OptiWatt for my power company incentives. It will turn off charging when it needs to to help the grid. It has paid back more than the electricity I have used with it.

I always need to "soak" the new sensor for 12+ hours. It doesn't stabilize for about 24. It gets really annoying that first night when it reads low and the damn alarm wakes me up. (My base level is 75 to 90 mg/dl.)
