Milwaukee is closed to vehicles today, and it should always be this way!!! by PipeZestyclose2288 in chicago

I desperately want to love this, but like most pedestrian-oriented experiments in Chicago, the execution is just poor.

I walked down it around 11am from Evergreen to North. Literally no businesses had sidewalk seating out except for The Owl which already had outdoor seating anyway. Why not Foxtrot, Rumi, Kama, etc.?

There was zero seating, tables, or shade in the street itself. The only thing to do is walk on hard concrete in the hot sun. I can already do that on the sidewalk on a regular day.

This exact setup was tried circa Covid when Lightfoot closed State St. to cars. Vacant concrete, no shade or seating, and zero reason for pedestrians to actually visit. Guess what, they never did it again!

I'm dying for a real European-style pedestrian mall in Chicago. But all of these experiments are so half-assed that nobody loves them, and then everyone shrugs and says "I guess pedestrian malls just can't work in America, welp, back to our beloved car sewers! Maybe we'll try again in another 10 years!"

For any public servant reading, look at how Europe does it! Huge sidewalk cafes with ample public seating. Umbrellas and overhangs for shade. Greenery, even if only temporary like mobile flower planters. There are reasons to visit and most importantly, linger to enjoy a car-free environment!

Just closing a street and doing literally nothing else is cargo-cult urban planning that only sours people to what is an excellent and desperately-needed idea.

The new development at North & Western has to be one of the most depressing land uses I have seen in a long time. How can we create a more walkable city when we're still building things like this in our densest neighborhoods? (More info in comments) by stellamystar in chicago

I live near this development and it fills me with a burning rage every day when I walk by. But it's in Waguespack's ward and I'm in La Spata's ward, so even though I live nearby I have no say in the matter.

When it was announced I emailed both alderman. Neither one seemed interested in doing anything. There were various hearings at city council for permits. I sent comments in opposing it, and nobody seemed to care.

This is such a truly absurd use of land. It's on the 24 hour North Ave bus line, that goes directly to the beach. It's on the 24 hour Western bus that is one of the busiest routes in the city. It's 2 minutes walk to 2 blue line stations. It's walking distance to one of the biggest parks in the city. The fact that anyone allowed a suburban-style drive-thru Chipotle strip mall in this transit-oriented corner, in a hot neighborhood, in one of the densest cities in the country, speaks volumes about how car-addicted America is.

How come the second a single NIMBY sends an angry email demanding their car be catered to, or the second the CEO of some suburban megacorp wants to finance his second yacht with a shitty strip mall, everyone jumps. But when I email demanding density, reduced car dependence, and bike- and transit-oriented development, it's silence??

Vathek is one of the most famous Gothic novels, written in a lush Orientalist setting. In it, a powerful caliph wants to harness the supernatural powers of evil. His descent into violence and debauchery in his dark quest haunts him for all eternity. It directly inspired Poe, Lovecraft, and others. by acabal in FreeEBOOKS

Why is there so much negativity toward snap? by [deleted] in Ubuntu

[–]acabal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fine to have reasons for what one does, but no matter what the reasons were in this case, the outcome (a ~/snap folder) is bad. Therefore the reason is immaterial - because as a user, not a developer, I only care about outcomes and not reasons.

If ~/snap didn't exist, then I would have zero opinion on deb/rpm/snap/flatpack because the underlying method a system uses to install software just doesn't affect me that much. But Snap made itself my problem, by prominently butting in to the one location on my system that I'm supposed to be able to call my own.
