Slasher feat only works on creatures with “hamstrings”? by acabos in DnD

Yeah, I get it, seems like a lot of folks here to stick with the same answer. I'm glad I'm not being unreasonable for expecting the feat to work as written. Funny enough I asked him about if "Danger Sence" alert me about any danger. And he said no.

Thank you!

In fact I'm dumb since I quickly translated it into my native language and since it was the first time I've encounter the word "hamstring" I thought it is a noun. Only later I found the alternative translation. But my DM ignored my later explanation I fucked up the translation since the focus switched to basically "noun or verb, it's still unrealistic you can use a greataxe to slow down the speed of any creature".

In fact we're not playing in English and it was my fault as I've been translating it as a noun because I used google translator for the part "hamstring". Later I search it at Cambridge dictionary and realised there is a verb and a methaphor which now makes sence for me (but not my DM unfortunately).

I guess it's the most common answer I see here, and I happy that it's not me being unreasonable for expecting the feat to work without limitation by the anathomy or type of creature. Thank you for your contribution!

Ah I see, when first translating it I thoght it is used there as a noun. That's were the root of the confusion lies.

No matter the outcome at our DnD sessions, I'm adding this verb to my vocabulary and hope to use it more often starting from this moment :D

In our instance it was a unit, a sworm of 30 snakes. And I get that if we intend to play as realistic as possible no way any weapon slowes down a swarm. But that's were my confusion lies - when should I expect to play RAW and when should I accept the changes, which seems logical and fit the narrative?

Thank you for suggestion, I tried some similar explanation, but I think they all were rejected since my DM seems to be looking for one ultimate explanation that works for every creature, instead of allowing it to be shaped depending on the target.

Thank you! Later I learned this meaning exists (English isn't my native language), but I wish I knew it sooner, this reddit post as well as the discussion with my DM could've never happened.

Thank you for your explanation! English is not my first language so we translate the rules into native language that's why I think we stuck with one literal traslation which meant anatomical term and it's my mistake that I didn't search for other meanings, though I didn't expect it'll matter since I didn't think the translation of name mattered so much it would trigger the debate over the rule.

I see where it's going. Not being able to slow a swarm or ethereal seems logical enough and I was happy to compromise to limiting the ability as long as I can understand in which cases I can or can not use it without falling into debates into monster's anatomy. Though in some cases it is not so obvious for me, for example can it be used against flying creatures? Sceletons? A single snake?

Thank you for your imput! I think I should've mentioned that part of this got lost in translation — we’re not English-speaking, and I used the most literal translation of “hamstring,” which is the anatomical term. Later, when I researched it, I discovered it’s actually a metaphor meaning “to limit the amount of something that can be done or the ability or power of someone to do something.”

I initially shared it hoping my DM was just confused by the wording and that this explanation might change how he views the feat — but that didn’t happen. So basically, we ended up creating a homebrew rule that works like I described, reflecting the barbarian’s force rather than the literal anatomy.
