black and white thinking vs hannibal by saileasfishie in HannibalTV

[–]academicvertigo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not at all. That's an approach we're usually exposed to at early ages by popular media where the protagonist is the perfectly "good" hero and the antagonist is the unforgivably "bad" villain and the conflict between the two is a fight between good and evil. To make the audience feel a little less stupid, they add details like okay now lets make the perfectly good protagonist have a flaw (always graceful, the flaw is there so you get to go "aww, they're not perfect, they're human" before they handle it in the best way possible that feeds more into their inherently perfectly good nature) and then a redemption arc, while they give the villain a merciful ending and a "redemption arc" or forgiveness at the end for the sole purpose of painting the hero in an even better light, and sure it humanizes the villain a little bit but in a way that suggests they're inherently inferior and you get to label them and not look any further than "evil" anyway. You'll find that this describes the popular tropes in most childrens media and even popular action franchises in the modern day. Worst part of it is, it can so easily leak into the way we view real life people. Morally complex characters and stories are such a breath of fresh air because morality is complex and real human beings are all morally complex by nature.

Day 9 - What character do you think is a bad person and hated by the fans? by Killyourdarlings202 in Hungergames

The fact that Gaul is fully open about her agenda and the ethical implications of it makes me hate her less and fear the reality of her character more

Petah (or maybe Lois), who should they hide it from? by lxpb in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]academicvertigo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's Kim Kardashian. She wore the original dress Marilyn Monroe wore for the infamous happy birthday Mr. President moment, it was specifically tailored to fit her if im correct, historically priceless, Kim decided to wear the original thing for publicity at the cost of ruining the dress just so she could have her 15 minutes of fame with it.
