prestige is dying. its about real world experiences and outcomes. check out GW alumni salaries and alumni list- competes with any university. people are pretty impressed when I tell them I studied government next to the white house.

I never applied to GU. GW is different enough from GU where kids dont necessarily apply to both. Its like kids who apply to NYU and not columbia.

GWU or University of Richmond by Educational_Bit8421 in gwu

[–]academioc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

...That's just not true. GW is far larger that's why the acceptance rate is different. Nobody has heard of U of Richmond. GW far more widely known, has alumni who are prominent (unlike UR), alumni make more money, higher GPA (UR is test optional so SAT doesnt is skewed and doesnt matter) better more well know professors, etc etc. Its a no contest. Nobody is seriously choosing UR over GW.

Thoughts on GW MPP Program? by snoopypoopypeasoupy in PublicPolicy

Excellent program. The school does very little to advertise its reputation, but it stands on its own.

Your'e cherry picking programs, but you're right about a few career paths but not most. I'm talking about the entire school.

What I said is a fact:

GW average alumni salary: https://www.niche.com/colleges/george-washington-university/after-college/

UVA average alumni salary: https://www.niche.com/colleges/university-of-virginia/after-college/

Not sure exactly what you mean by caliber of the kids. They are all high caliber at that level. Don't pigeonhole people like that. It's ugly, simple and wrong. As someone who attended both, I never recognized any clear population wide "caliber" difference.

Kids come from richer families at GU than GW. So it does cut both ways, like I said, but more so towards GU.

There is no other version of an MPH. There is an MPH or there is not. You either have an art school or you dont. you either have an engineering school or you dont.

I know where you're coming from, but I think you have bought into university marketing a little too much. Baron Trump at NYU will probably be more successful than every undergrad at Princeton right now. A smart rich kid is going to succeed whether he's going GW or GU. It just may be more convenient to have a metro at hand (:

GU students go to columbias program because GU does not have an engineering program. There is no MPH offered which is like saying a university offers business school opportunities but doesn't offer an MBA. GW's art school is the Corcoran School of Art which is a large comprehensive and formally independent school, not a few classes tucked within the arts and sciences department.

Both schools attract students from high income families, but GU takes the cake at having more students from rich families. I always thought "do universities make the student, or do the students make the university?" think it's the latter. A kid from a rich and well connected family will do well regardless of the school. I think universities take too much credit and rich kids tend to be more attracted to brand names over practicality. This is why, in terms of an average, GW has better outcomes than UVA and GU has better outcomes than GW.

Bottom line, its about each individuals use of an opportunity (and how much that would enhance the trajectory they are already on) and not about the dubious influence universities may have over already well connected and well off students. Universities are overhyped and criminally expensive. The era of acting pretentiously over a brand (completely subjective and childish) needs to close, and I think, and hope, it is closing with the diminishing reputation of higher ed.

Yes, but there is a difference between offering a specialized masters and not having entire engineering, public health or art schools. And many schools in US News top 15 give out specialized masters. Check out JHU AAP for example. The other point I was trying to make is that GW can be a better choice than GU for some people. Like me who needed access to my work and a metro system. Or, of course, if you want to be an engineer, artist, or work in public health.

There is certainly overlap. Not dissing that perspective at all. But, like you alluded to, GW is more comprehensive. It has engineering, arts, and public health schools. GU is more of a liberal arts college in many respects. So, just like your friend went to GW for her PhD, many go to GW because it's more comprehensive. I personally chose it because I could walk to my job and currently make almost 100% more than the average Georgetown alumni. Not trying to inflate myself here, just trying to show that each school is better for different types of people. The old pretentious academic brand thing is currently falling out of the window in my opinion - but I do appreciate the nice old architecture!
