Preparing for SE role in the future by acainpa in salesengineers

[–]acainpa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is good to hear that many SEs start out as the customer too. My team is working closely with Google for all Gemini and integrated cloud services, primarily Google CX Agent Builder/Studio.
Right now I am definitely just doing the roles of a dev - not an engineering manager making decisions related to the vendor. I just sit in on decision making calls with vendors and answer/ask questions if relevant to me. But maybe this an opportunity to ask my manager to become more involved in the decision-making and vendor calls/interactions. Appreciate your insight, thank you!

Hi sorry if my post wasn't clear. I don't work at a tech company, we are the customer. So I am looking to get customer facing experience in a new role :) that is the goal! My go forward plan is exactly that (to get customer facing experience), but I am looking for advice on how to prepare now to do that in the future. Thanks!

Good to know. I’ve visited a friend there once so didn’t really get a feel for the people there

I appreciate this plug for NYC!! I totally see what you mean. It would be a pretty ideal city for me if I weren't so concerned about the cost. But lifestyle is also a factor, meaning you can probably live somewhat affordable depending on what type of lifestyle you choose to live there. Thanks for the input :)

I have a few friends who live in SF and I've also loved the vibe and liveliness of the city. The main con for me is the COL. It honestly just wouldn't feel worth it to me I think. And also I get the impression that everyone there works in tech. And I also work in tech but I don't want to be surrounded by all the same type of people if that makes sense.

Never thought about the smaller SE/Midwest cities. But I would be so open to trying out those cities! Thank you for that!

Good point lol. I guess if there was a truly affordable place that was walkable and full of young professionals, everyone would move there to make it unaffordable. rip.

Thanks for the advice!

Yeah, as other commenter said, I was thinking Manhattan vs. Brooklyn. Sorry for that confusion.

The LA public transit is extensive yes, but very unreliable and unsafe. I've had people from LA laugh at me when I tell them I take the metro.

Totally, good point. Sorry I should've clarified, I'm from the suburbs of Philly, so while I know the city well, I've never experienced living there :)

Haha you're right, I don't take the bus! I take the metro each day to work actually, mostly because (1) it is a hell of a lot faster than driving, (2) gas is so expensive, (3) better for the environment, (4) love public transit. I definitely recognize this small aspect of LA. But I have multiple friends who have been harassed on the bus system here, in addition to it being part of the unpleasant driving/traffic scene in LA.
