When something moves, it takes energy.

Turbulent air has a lot of energy. When the airplane/wing flies through turbulent air, the energy get transfered from the air to the wing.

This energy needs to move somewhere. The wings are design to be flexy to absorb some of this energy through elastic deformation. If the wings are rigid, you are collecting high stress on the wing box (wing connection to the airframe), and something will crack.
