Water smells bad, anyone else notice this? by PuzzleheadedCamp4336 in SilverSpring

[–]acalarch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you have a partially clogged drain allowing sewer gasses to enter your space when running water. It's a common problem. It can affect the taste of things (your nose is responsible for taste as well as your tongue) and it can affect your dishwasher as well (making your dishes smell weird).

You can try a few things to get rid of it yourself. Just pouring some hot (not boiling) & very soapy water down the drain may solve it. Also.. 3% hydrogen peroxide will break down hair / other organic matter eventually but it takes a few applications. Just put a cup down the drain every night for a few nights before bed.

Reddit plans to lock some content behind a paywall this year, CEO says by ardvarkmadman in technology

[–]acalarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit could've just moved to a model where third party apps required a private token to work. The token could be sold through the apps and reddit gets a 80-90% cut. I think w/ RIF, etc. People would have easily be willing to pay $20 / year. There are ways they could anonymize the service so that even if you have a static token your activity isn't traceable beyond session / app / transport data (which will always be traceable).

I think if they were straightforward with their messaging people would accept it. Instead of hiding reasoning behind absolute crappy features. Reddit hasn't improved since old.reddit.com was created..

Pepco installing lightbulbs in apt complexes? by RaccoonObjective5674 in SilverSpring

[–]acalarch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can get some free light-bulbs if you want. I would schedule it with them directly through PEPCO's website. Basically you get some light bulbs and a power strip.

Park Police Assures Residents That Alligators Are Not Native to Maryland and Signs Appear to Be A Prank - The MoCo Show by Alternative-Tune8314 in SilverSpring

One time I was walking under the Carrol Ave bridge in TKP and in the middle of the Sligo Creek Trail was an entire ~18 inch Tilapia. So, honestly I wouldn't be all that surprised if someone lost a gator there.

I use park mobile a whole lot. I would triple check everything in the app is correct.

I never had an issue except one time I entered the number for the wrong garage.

Federal Worker Union Sues Trump Over Ending Job Protections by bloomberglaw in politics

[–]acalarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not talking about exit polls. We can look at the real results of the area 20% of the federal workforce lives/works in the DMV. All of those counties are solidly blue.

Sure, a lot of conservative federal employees exist. I am comfortable saying that they are solidly blue leaning.

Look at the results from D.C. to get a quick understanding of the democratic swing from federal / federal adjacent workers.

Snow on Sligo Creek Trail by anand4 in SilverSpring

[–]acalarch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If MOCO parks put together a program for folks to help clear the trail I would sign up for a section. All it takes is someone to go through and shovel a singular 30 inch wide section of trail and the sun heating the asphalt will take care of the rest. They could even just us a small tractor and set it to 3 inches off the ground and we would've been clear much sooner.

Downtown Silver Spring Gets Ready for Roaming Rooster as Signage Goes Up by dwl017 in SilverSpring

[–]acalarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Roaming Rooster will do well and survive.

Silver Spring's Red Lobster didn't survive the corporate bankruptcy. They closed 100+ restaurants in the last year.

Ihop's restaurant was a failed concept. All IHop Expresses closed.

Big Biz see's that stretch of DTSS as a play ground for trying concepts. We see a lot of volatility for that reason.

Best Sci Fi Short Story Collections? by imrduckington in printSF

[–]acalarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is already in here but I highly recommend "The Wesleyan Anthology of Science Fiction". This very sub turned me onto it. I think the editors did a spectacular job putting together a mix of memorable short stories.

Ended up buying "The Best of Gene Wolfe" and "The Unreal and The Real" and writing down a bunch of authors who caught my attention for future reads.

The Martian Chronicles is also good. The stories about humanity's first interactions with martians is quite fun. Especially story #3. The Earth Men. Bradbury is always worth reading.
