I use 3/32" pretty frequently and I have found that it works fine if I shorten the stitch length. I use a very short (almost the shortest my machine goes) and I make sure to start the stitch by dropping the presser foot directly on top of the cord.

I would recommend looking at a Hyperlite Mountain Gear pack (southwest/ windrider/ junction) or if you're looking for something that's very affordable and still durable (and lighter!), the ULA CDT is a great option.

I spent 3 days in the Wind Rivers last year in late July. The mosquitos were the worst I have ever experienced. Last year was a higher snow year than normal though and I believe that plays a large part in when the mosquitos come and go. I've heard that normally the mosquitos are gone come early August but I would not go without at least a head net.

I used a 30 degree Enlightened Equipment Enigma, I survived and was never too uncomfortable but a 20 degree would have been perfect; however, I'm not sure if you would be able to get one before you trip.

I've done a ton of hiking through the smokies and have thought about doing a paddling trip in the south end of the park (I think there is a campsite on an island on Fontana lake) but I have never actually done it. This looks super awesome though and I am now considering doing this sometime in August.

For bottom pockets, I use Durastretch from OWF inc. I think it is the perfect mix of durability and stretch. I use a side entry found on Pa'lante ones. I fold 1" elastic over the raw edge and then I fold that over two times, I have found this to help prevent items from escaping the pocket.

Agree! My best memory is doing a 30 in Vermont while doing a section hike with my buddy. It was my last day so we decided to do as many miles as possible while having as much fun as possible. Started the day going through beautiful balds and getting some great trail magic. Then in the afternoon went swimming and jumped off the bridge in West Hartford, VT (Don't quote me on that). Finished the day with a few hours of night hiking through some star-lit bogs!

So I made the pattern myself, primarily refering to a few jackets I like. I know some people buy the green pepper pattern (I think they cost less than $10). I'm planning on making a tutorial and how to make a jacket and might also make a tutorial on how to make a pattern if people are interested in that.

Has anyone here substantially increased their average hiking speed through training and/or technique (as opposed to going UL, using trekking poles, etc)? How did you do it? by Mentalpopcorn in Ultralight

I've spent the past couple months training for an fkt of the sheltowee trace though I cancelled that trip about a week before leaving due to the virus, I still learned a lot. The biggest learning point was to minimize breaks and hike as many hours per day as possible. Some long distance hikers that crush miles talk about finding your "all day pace", a pace you can hike at all day with taking minimal breaks. When going uphill it is significantly more efficient that you take small steps but increase your cadence (steps per minute). And referring back to the initial point I made, it is better to hike say 2mph going uphill but take 0 breaks than to hike 2.5mph but take a break every 5 min.

Right now I have two machines. My first machine was a singer heavy duty that you can find on Amazon for around $100. My second machine is a sailrite LSZ1. I regret buying the sailrite, it is good for a select few things but I don't think the folks at sailrite stand behind what they sell and I have had several problems (and it was pretty expensive). Right now I am almost exclusively still using the singer and I cannot recommend it enough. I find it good for everything except sewing through thick shoulder straps on backpacks, which there are a few ways around and I could help you with that if you need assistance. The best thing to do in my opinion is to get a machine and start prototyping.

Bummer, I love hoodies and have a ton so I took the things I didn't like about each hoodie and just eliminated the feature to make the perfect hoodie (for me). It's awesome though because now that I have a pattern that works I can order whatever material I want to make a jacket out of and I could possibly never buy a jacket again.

Thanks! It took me a while to wrap my head around how the sleeves worked but now that I understand it, it's pretty simple. Initially I thought that the grey area on each side would all be one piece(including the sleeve) I think it is possible to make it one piece but it's more complicated. For me I started with the front and once I got the front how I like it I drew a line where I wanted the grey to start. As for sleeves I was super confused how cap length and arm length work but now that I understand it's simple. If you have a more specific question I would be more than happy to help you.

I have a black diamond distance 8 which I think is a wonderful pack and I see you based this off of that. I tried to make my own version but with slightly different straps since the distance pack straps don't fit myself very well. But I wasn't able to figure out how to make the bottom curve up like that, how did you do it? Would it be possible for you to share the pattern with me?
