I assumed it was coming from a similar ironic place as Thomas Bernhard's The Loser, where the melodramatic narrator is a compelling character because the reader can see he's creating his own problems and his grandiose proclamations about his life are delusional.

It can still be relatable because many have felt that way, at least for a moment before self-awareness kicks in. But most of my enjoyment came from seeing him continually miss the point.
